Why did we trade for J-Rich?

We traded for J-Rich because

1)Raja was declining fast. His defense was getting worse every month and he was a liability on offense. All he did was stand around for a three point shot. He could not create his own shot.

2)Diaw was inconsistent and unpredictable. One game he would look like an All-Star PF and a scrub the next. I personally do not miss Diaw. However, I am happy that he is being utilized well by Larry Brown of the Bocats. He looks happier.

J-Rich can create his own shot, shoot the three very well, slash to the basket, and down right score. He is highly explosive and will flourish under our new SSOL system. Mark my words.

The OP said J-Rich could not put up the numbers Barbosa did last night. Are you being serious? Barbosa did that against the lowly Clippers team who gets ******* on almost every game. Barbosa should stay with the second unit so we can have a quick scorer off the bench. Maybe after 2010 when Nash and Shaq leaves and Grant Hill leaves or retires, Barbosa can play SG and J-Rich can play SF.

That would be very interesting to see. The Suns teams have always been known as running teams that can score.

Anyway, I don't think some of you guys realize how deadly J-Rich is under a up tempo offense. The man is a offensive machine.

Well, he'll definitely get his chance. However, J-Rich hasn't really demonstrated a strong ability at getting how own shot off.

Diaw is one of the best one-one players in the game, if thats what we were looking for. He's also much better with his back to the basket than either Amare or Shaq.

LOL. You think Diaw has a better back to the basket game than Shaq. Diaw was not flourishing in Phoenix so we traded him. Shaq>>Diaw. J-Rich can create his own shot. The problem was, the offense was **** under Porter. Poor spacing and lack of creativity. All it really was was feeding the ball to Shaq in the post. J-Rich and everyone on the team except for Shaq was not utilized properly. That has changed since last night.

The Suns are back to playing their old style. Can you imagine how J-Rich will play when he plays again. I promise you that J-Rich will amaze you by how different he looks under Gentry's new system. Did you see the Phoenix vs Orlando game? The Suns are a offensive machine and J-RIch will be a huge contributor.

The problem with your thinking is that while JRich will play better in an up tempo offense, so would have Bell and Diaw! Of course it appeared as though they were declining. Porter made all of our guys except for Shaq decline. JRich himself "declined" a great deal with us since the trade compared to how he played for the Bobcats. Porter usually just had him stand around at the 3 point line, pretty much the same exact way he used Bell. (Except Bell is a better 3 point shooter) And you should ask Bobcat fans how bad Bell is on defense and see what they tell you.

However, I am happy that he is being utilized well by Larry Brown of the Bocats. He looks happier.

Duh. Who wouldn't be happier after being freed of Porter? If you don't think Diaw would be happier now and playing better under Gentry, you're kidding yourself.

That's a no-brainer. J-Rich all the way. Raja was worthless. Great guy and I loved his tenacity -- 2 YEARS AGO -- but he was pretty much done with us. As for Diaw, I'm pretty surprised you've got some a love for the guy. He had one good year, and that was with him knowing that he didn't have Stoudemire lurking (AND it was a contract year). All the other time with him he was worthless and with a huge killer contract.

Completely agree. Not to mention that Raja's decline just didn't all of the sudden start under Porter. People were complaining about Raja's defensive decline last year under D'Antoni.

Good lord. One of the best one-on-one players in the game? Are you serious? Kobe Bryant is one of the best one-on-one players in the game--are you saying you'd equate BORIS DIAW with Kobe Bryant? Seriously? That statement hurts your credibility more than anything you've said before or since.

I already posted this. But this is the type of stuff Jrich can bring in the up-temp offense that Gentry wants.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LY3E6tSDUg

I felt bad for Richardson because he was totally misused with Terry Porter, now we are going back to a style that made him so deadly with the Warriors.

Now that we are going up-tempo, I would take Richardson over Raja and Diaw. Raja's defense was quickly declining and when his 3 pointer wasn't falling he was worthless on offense. Combine that with his defense that is going down hill... Boris wouldn't contribute much because of Shaq and Amare, the only thing I will miss about him is his defense.

Still J-Rich>>Bell. J-Rich IMO is a equal or better three point shooter than Bell. I would rather have a more explosive, younger SG who can cut to the basket, create his own shot, and shoot the three than a SG who only shoots threes, can't create for himself, and is not defending as well as he used to.

Now that the Suns are freed of Porter, expect a completely different Jason Richardson.

I thought it was obvious I was talking about big men. Show me another big man with as many go-to moves as Diaw. Jack McAllum went to it in depth in "Seven Seconds or Less". Bill Simmons called him the best with his back to the basket.

Show me another big man who can do what he does. Maybe Gasol? Dirk or KG?

Seriously. I challenge you.

The whole point was its STUPID to trade Diaw for J-Rich so we have someone who can get his own shot off when Diaw is one of the best at getting his own shot off!

Just ask the Spurs last year. They didnt know what to do.

WRONG, Bell was already playing like crap last season and Diaw, well...... i wont even bother.
I miss Bell's intensity but that is all he had left in him, his defense was sub-par and his offense was no longer reliable. There are days the 3's drop but when they don't (most of the time), dude has nothing left to offer and you can see his frustration, i believed his fading offensive skills killed his defensive mojo.

Yep, his career high shooting from 3P this season with us probably made him want to cry at night.

Well, it's painfully obvious that you haven't watched the Suns or the NBA for a couple years. If he is so great, why isn't he tearing up the league for Charlotte?

My goodness, take off your Diaw-colored glasses. :bang:

That's not what Chap was referring to you and you know it. He was speaking from a defensive standpoint. Raja was bad at times last season and really bad this season. It was our worst defended position at the time of the trade. That honor usually goes to Nash every season. That should put into perspective how bad he was playing defensivly at the SG spot. When a player is brought in to be your defensive specialist and he declines 2 seasons in a row and the SG becomes your worst defended position...it's time for a change (regarless of the reason).

Exactly. Even offensively, Raja was a hindrance, not a help, on the floor.

He had a good 3 point percentage but was widley inconsistent. On another thread I posted Raja's 3 point peformance game by game. He would shoot for a great percentage then dissappear for a few games. His 3 point percentage was very misleading.

The best analogy I can paint is Amare can get 18 rebounds one game then he gets 4 rebounds the next. His average might be 8 rebounds per game but it doesn't tell the entire story of how bad he can be on some nights. Same applied to Raja.

He was brought in here to play defense and shoot the 3. When his 3 point shot would dissappear for a game or 2...what else did he contribute?? He was playing bad defense. He was a hinderance during those games.

Why do you always have to respond like this? That takes away from any point you might have. Don't tell someone that they haven't watched the Suns or the NBA. That's just so childish.

Why not answer the man's question instead?

Because I'm tired of people posting things with no basis in fact, yet treating it so. What proof does he have that Diaw is one of the best back-to-the-basket players? Bill Simmons? Come on. Some people have their head in the sand and have no desire to remove it because it's easier to chop people down than raise them up, in this case, Jason Richardson.

I meant afrosun. Sorry. Point still applies.

Well, I don't agree that a change is needed if there's a good reason why Bell was struggling. If indeed he was. I remember one time you told me that OJ Mayo dropped 30+ points on Raja. As it turned out, almost half of those points came in the few minutes that Raja was out of the game. I've argued over and over with you that defensive per is an unreliable stat. I'd rather not get into that again. Any number of different factors could account for a change in defensive PER, like I've said to you in the past. One of which is whether they defend the same players or not. The last head to head match up that JRich won was against Philly's Willie Green and Louis Williams. Did JRich defend Green and Williams? I know Bell wouldn't have been defending them. Does JRich being able to defend Green and Williams well mean he's a better defender than Raja?

I haven't seen any sign that we were as a whole a better defensive team. But what I have seen is that we played as a whole worse post trade with than we played pre trade.

False.

You need proof he's great with his back to the basket? Why did we go to him for nearly all of game 5 against the Spurs? They didn't have anyone on the team that could guard him. There wasn't anyone happier we got rid of him than Spurs fans. I could get the thread from Spurstalk if you want.

What about his great back down to win game 1 of the WCF back in 06?

How about the fact that we just watch him tear up Amare a couple of weeks ago?

Diaw has an incredible IQ and great hesitation. He's also a really capable defender.

Can you post the location that you're receiving all these defensive statistics from? I'd be curious to know how you found out that half of Mayo's 30 points came when Raja wasn't guarding him.

As far as defense pre-trade vs. post-trade, the defense was bad in both instances.
