Why give Boldin a extension/redo his deal now?

I like Boldin like everyone but doesn't redoing his deal or giving an extension with two years left on his current deal set the tone for other Cards players wanting the same thing?

I think he needs to prove that he can stay healthy and have a great year before I give him a extension. I would never redo his deal.

I don't hear Big Ben in Pittsburgh trying to get his deal redone. And by the way, Ben has good knees.

But then again, Big Ben is being paid as a QB at the #11 spot, whereas Boldin is being paid as a late 2nd rounder.

I agree. He has two years left on his contract. He had a great rookie year but missed much of last year w/ a knee injury. I say wait and see what kind of year he has next season before considering an extension. I think that is what the Cardinal's officials are doing.

Ben was a high first round pick. Boldin was a second . Ben got very big money to sign. Q didn't. Q went to the pro bowl and broke most records held by first year WR. While Ben was great and holds most wins records he wasn't the first year player IMO that Q was. Q was hurt and came back mid season and almost still led the cardinals in catches and yards.

Q now deserves Ben kind of money, it would not really set a new precedent in Cardinal land unless they had simalar talents and wouldn;t that be a great thing to happen.I say get his deal done now and ddon't worry about himfor the next 5-6 years.

Ben was the #3 QB picked #11 in the 1st round. He did not get anything close to the Eli Manning/Phillip Rivers deal. Boldin was a high 2nd round pick. How a player 6 monthes remove from knee surgury can demand a big contract is a player who's ego is getting in the way. I think more and more that he will be traded after the 2005 season.

He was 15-1 as a starter. How could you say that he did have as good of rookie year as Boldin? There is much more to being a good player in the NFL. It is not always about the numbers. For QBs, it is often about how good of a leader/pressure QB you are. If it was always about great numbers, P. Manning would everyones pick for QB while Tom Brady and his three SB rings would be left behind. I would rather have Brady than Manning. Manning is more fun to watch but in a big game I would put my money on Brady.

Your looking through smokey glasses. Boldin came in set the NFL record for Recieving. He had a MINOR knee injury the next year and came back and was on pace for 90 catches and over 1,000 yards again had he played the whole year.

He has proven he is much more than a 2nd round talent and deserves to be payed more than he is. Granted if his demands are to high then I agree make him wait. But if he expecting a Burress type deal then he is worth every penny and we need to lock him up. Thats a fair contract!

Your comparing apples to oranges when it comes to Big Ben and Boldin!

Boldin is the type of player you want on your team. he has shown the ability to take over games. He is a force that our offense needs to become regarded as "excellent".
That being said, re-doing Boldins contract is not top priority right now. He needs to come into mini camp in good shape and be a leader. He needs to do everything he can to help jump start this offense.
His time will come sometime before november. Thats the deadline for being able to apply some of the cost to this years cap.
If he is performing as he has been up to this point, he should be rewarded and signed for a long term deal.

This is not the time for him or his agent to start "demanding" anything. The Cards have shown a willingness to appease and reward Boldin but he needs to hold off for just a little while.

It's common practice to re-do contracts for draft-steals like Boldin (situations where the rookie contract doesn't match the player's production). This year it's Boldin and TE Gates from SD that gets new deals. Last year it was Portis and the year before it was DT Jenkins from Carolina.

Boldin should and will get a new deal. PERIOD!!!

Whether or not Boldin's demands are too high. That's another story...

Smoky glasses? He missed half the 2004 season.

The only way Portis got his deal was to get traded.

Cards should wait until mid-season to re-structure his contract. I really need to be convinced that his prior injury will not hamper future preformance. A good look see for eight regular season games, with a new QB, should give a solid answer. Also, with these alleged rumors about not reporting to training camp, it would give us an answer about attitude/motivation.

Ben signed a 6 year deal worth $40 million dollars, including $9 million signing bonus.

Boldin signed a 4 year deal witha $1,210,00 bonus, so lets make a deal here and tear up Boldins current contract and sign him to a new 4-year deal with a $7,790,000 signing bonus!!! :) This will give him basically the same contract as Big Ben.

I love how a player can do well and suddenly deserve more than they were contracted to play for, but you never see a guy come out and say "I sucked this year...take some of your money back."

wha? What game did Boldin EVER take over that led to something? Taking over usually means taking over and WINNING - and considering that the one game where Boldin was lights out we lost by 18 points doesn't so much about his "impact".

Good Lord - a lot of you guys really don't watch other NFL teams do you?

Whats your point here? Portis none the less got his deal. Hes happy and Denver is minus a quality RB.

He missed half the season and still had as many catches as Fitzgerald who makes about 10 times the amount Boldin does.

He deserves to be paid!

That logic makes no sense. Bertrand Berry had some great games that we lost too, SImeon Rice, Eric Swann dominated inside on many games that we lost. Rob Moore had some great games, David Boston had some great games, etc...... The bottom line is the team as a whole still stunk. Theres not to many good WRs out there that can carry a bad team! Same goes for most positions!

I'm not disagreeing with you Shane - that team did stink - and considering we were so bad, I don't think it makes sense to say any player on those teams "singlehandedly" carried us to anything, correct? As far as your other list - all those players actually had GREAT games where they WERE the reason we won - Q hasn't had one of those, thus, you can't make the claim that he can single-handedly carry a team.

I guess it's a question of what does "taking over a game" mean to you. To me - and to anyone else that watches teams that win football games or basketball games - or any other sport for that matter - it means being able to singlehandedly raise the level of a teams play - either completely overacheiving and just falling short or leading a team to victory.

So here's my question: what does "taking over a game" mean?

I think it means

You make some plays, some that are not expected against the law of averages that elevate the team's play and you achieve victory. L.T. of the Giants did it but for the most part a QB seems best equipped to get it done. Say what you will about Jake Plummer but he did do it more than once when he played for us but on the down side he was the reason with early picks why the team was in the position for need of game breaking plays to begin with.

Well if you ask me football is a game where your definition is damn near impossible to aquire. If a guy like say Walter Payton takes over a game is it merely Walter Payton? Or was it not only him but his line elevating there play? Did they elevate it because of Walter or vice versa? In football its really hard to say. But one guy alone cannot truly carry a team in the sport of football IMO!

For example Q can completely carry the offense like he did for almost 3 quarters of that Detroit game. But once the Defense collapses, the O-line blocking goes to hell and a handbasket not giving Blake any time to throw. Then does that diminish the fact that Q carried the team for a certain amount of the game? I say it doesnt. To me it shows just how much of a team sport this game really is. You need 22 seperate individuals who all have different assignements doing there collective jobs.

Ok.

So you want to trade Boldin? Either way he will get his money wether its from us or soemone else. Might as well be from us.

Do you really think that a so called "injury risk" who put up just as many catches as Fitz in 1/2 the games deserves to be paid 10 times less the money?

Fitz had has many TD's in his rookie season as Boldin did in his. And Fitz was hampered by a bad ankle most of the season.

Why does Boldin need to break the bank today? He still has two years left on his deal. If he stays healthy and plays well, he will break the bank. What's the hurry?

You are a little off. It is a incentive contract. A guaranteed contract will be his next one.

Big Ben got:

Roethlisberger signed a six-year contract in August 2004. According to the AP, the deal is worth $22.26 million in salaries and bonuses, with an additional $17.73 million available via incentives. $4.875 million of the incentives are based on playing time and easily reachable for a starting quarterback, according to the AP. Roethlisberger's base salaries will be $230,000, $305,000, $655,000, $1.026 million, $1.356 million, and $1.707 million over the next six years. According to ESPN, Roethlisberger's successful rookie campaign could net him $2.6 million in bonuses for 2004.

They are different types of recievers. Boldin is very much the possesion type who will get 100 catches each year but not crazy TD numbers.

Fitzgerald is the main target in the red zone. Who I expect will have less catches but alot of TD's.
