SK suffers from GM 'Paralysis By Analysis.' I have no doubt that SK can quote chapter and verse from all the stats compiled on the QB and the draft in the many links posted here.

The easiest thing to do is to find a reason not to make a move. This is where all the analysis makes a GM catatonic and numb to act. SK uses the 'comparables' when evaluating a player---who is the pro QB that looks most like the rook QB you are evaluating. It was SK's rationale for passing on Russell Wilson---the only comparable was Drew Breese and SK didn't want to gamble.

(Here's a trivia question---who did the Cards take in the round instead of Wilson?)

SK is finally going to have to either **** or get off the pot. He has to decide if he is going to be the guy in Card's history who just couldn't pull the trigger on a QB and sends us to years of mediocrity OR he is going to be the guy who took that risk and went after the guy---despite some flaws---who worked out for us.

He doesn't "have" to do any of that. He can play it however he wants to, and he has a lot of options in his hands. His legacy is going to be defined by wins, nothing else, and he's already the winningest GM in Arizona Cardinals history. Sure, he probably wants to have a long and illustrious career, but if Kirk Cousins or Teddy Bridgewater or Josh McCown take us to the Super Bowl, he's still going to be the guy that did that.

He has one plain and simple goal - to set the team up for success, whether that is now or a little bit in the future. We're not going to fondly remember him if he trades up for Josh Allen and completely busts, leaving us bereft of future draft picks to remedy the mistakes, as "the guy who took that risk and went after that guy."

Only 2 of the 8 QBs were top 10 picks.

It's like the NBA lottery and ping pong balls---your odds of winning a Super Bowl increase if you draft a QB in the 1st round, you stick with him and keep him with the same coach through his prime---and you build your team around him. The evidence is pretty compelling.

The Cardinals have used only one 1st rounder on a QB in all their years in Arizona. Matt Leinart.

Let's look at this a different way. It could be that the QBs talent dictates a coach stays or goes and could sway the odds. If you have a talented QB it is more likely to have him and the coach stick around for a while. I mean you're not going to fire BB if Brady is on top of his game.

There's a heck of a lot more failed 1st round QB-coach combos than successful ones. It's about finding the right guy, not a guy.

So often the QB/HC fails because the franchise prematurely loses faith in the QB or the HC or both.

<facepalm>

Keim was not the GM when Russell Wilson was drafted. That was Rod Graves' last year.

.only 4 of the 19 QBs drafted outside of the top 10 in 17 years still start. That's a horrible percentage.
Probably not compared to any other span of 22 picks in the draft. You have to remember it’s all relative.

7. Deshaun Watson is the only QB in the last 10 years selected outside of the top 10 that currently starts. (unless you count Bridgewater)

In my analysis, if we're going to take a QB in the 1st, it really pays to be in the top 5. A list of all QB's taken since 2001 and picked between 10-15 are:

2017 Patrick Mahomes #10
2017 Deshaun Watson#12
2011 Blaine Gabbert #10
2011 Christian Ponder #12
2006 Matt Leinart #10
2006 Jay cutler #11
2004 Ben Roethlisberger #11

2004... We could have had Ben, but we got Levi. Let me go jump off another bridge. Ugh.

[Edit] Could we swap places with Indy at 3 for our 1st and say... Chandler Jones, plus maybe a 3rd too?

I love him, but we really need a QB.

Go Cards.

He hasn’t technically been named starter (or maybe he has), but the trade of smith makes mahomes a starter, so that’s two from last season in 10+ that will be starters this year.

Levi wasn't 2004 -- we took some other bum who didn't make it, Lonny Fitzpatrick or something like that, with the 3rd pick that year instead of Ben.

Adrian Peterson was the guy was passed on for Levi (and that was 2007).

Wow. You're right . I got my years mixed up. 07 was Whiz's first year that he took Levi.

I love hearing UoP chant Lonny, Lonny, Lonny!!!

Go Cards!!!

a. I had to double check, but it looks like Watson was named starter for week 2, and continued to start until his injury leading into week 9.
b. You're correct, I'm assuming the impending KC trade of Alex makes Mahomes a starter for this discussion.
c. I was massaging the facts a little to make my point. Mahomes was drafted at 10, therefore I didn't include him in my statement, "Deshaun Watson is the only QB in the last 10 years selected outside of the top 10 that currently starts. (unless you count Bridgewater)" .

Go Cards!!!

• The scheme or talent around Washington State quarterbackLuke Falk didn't help him much in Pullman this season, but NFL scouts are taking notice of the senior quarterback. Multiple NFL scouts told me this week that Falk interviewed well at the Senior Bowl, and they think his character, leadership and football IQ could push him up boards—maybe even into the second day of the draft.

I don’t know why but Falk has always given me a Chad Pennington vibe. Which isn’t a bad thing.

So I heard something interesting on the radio. Someone says that if the right offer came, SF would trade Jimmy Garoppolo and then sign Kirk Cousins. Would you give up this years first and maybe next years 2nd for him? That would be like drafting a QB in the first round.

They figured that Cousins and Garoppolo would cost about the same, so if you could get really good picks back, they go for it and put Cousins with his former coach.

I think I would. I really like what I’ve seen out of Garoppolo... we’d have to trade likely this years and next years 1 to move up anyway... on a risky... and we wouldn’t have to sweeten the pot any more than that with picks we might have to give up in a draft trade.

Kid’s still pretty young, learned from the best and has been successful the majority of the time when given a chance... mostly with very little talent.

This would actually be my preferred route to fix the QB situation.

There isn't a scenario in this world that would make 9ers trade Garoppolo. None.Nada.Zilch

Well, that would certainly make things interesting for at least a couple of days while that went down.

I must admit that I wasn’t pessimistic at all when the Niners got Garoppolo. I mean, at that time it was about a year since he had last been on the field and thrown a pass. To me, some people overreacted heavily in almost declare him as somewhat of a sure thing. I don’t know if it was because that was what most media-guys told everyone, or if it was because he was a backup to Tom Brady or what, but the reality is that no-one, except perhaps some coaches in New England, could possible have any idea how good he actually was at that time.

Now it’s different since he has played six games as the clear-cut starter so that other teams have been able to watch tape of him, study his tendencies, design a gameplan against him and in general just have seen him play recently. Though I do know that next season will probably be even more challenging to him since teams have had much more time to prepare those things.

I wouldn’t have to think twice of adding Garoppolo to the roster if I had the chance. Now, there is absolutely no imaginable way where the Niners trade him to the Cardinals, but I think it would be a no-brainer that you would want him over any possible rookie, maybe excluding Andrew Luck or a comparable draft prospect. I would even trade multiple first round picks to get him. Then again, I would also consider signing Cousins outright, but that is obviously for another discussion.

Thanks for posting this, Bruce. I really think the thought are interesting. I wouldn’t really understand it if Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch dumped the guy they just paid a second round pick to get, and who has shown he can lead their team and be successful, but on the other hand I don’t think the theory is that crazy. Kyle Shanahan has been very supportive of Cousins and the two of them has a great relationship. Maybe it’s just someone who has made up an entertaining theory and wanted to share it with his listeners, but no matter what I think it is a fascinating idea.

I don't think so either. I think the host was just playing off of the Alex Smith trade or SF is trying to use it to negotiate. It was a local show up here in the NW that talks a lot of SF and Seattle football. Either way, it's fun to dream.

I think the host was more playing off of the Alex Smith trade, but either way, it is interesting to think about. If somehow Lynch turned a 2nd round pick into two 1st round picks, he'd be a genius. Then get a QB that fits the system for nothing other than the money you would have given the other guy.

Best QB class in years.

This is a no brainer

Def the most overhyped class. I want no part of Allen darnold or Rosen. Darnold may have the worst college season of any QB ever drafted in the first round. Everyone around here thought “Palmover” was bad wait til you see Darnold.
