* Sad to see the Raiders so flat after such a spirited season with Derek Carr at QB and Jack "Riverboat Gambler" Del Rio rolling the dice.

* Good strategy to blitz Brock Osweiler---but Bill O'Brien manifested the Patriots' philosophy of throwing quick passes to the TEs and to WR DeAndre Hopkins to the point where they got the DBs to bite and then Osweiler made a good throw on the fade to Hopkins which Hopkins caught and adroitly managed to scrape his toes in bounds.

* Jadeveon Clowney has arrived in a big way. Of course it helped that LT Donald Penn was out.

* When one thinks back 4 years and where the Raiders were having traded Carson Palmer and not re-signing Jared Veldheer, what GM Reggie McKenzie has done drafting QB Derek Carr and assembling on o-line of Penn---Osemelo---Hudson---Jackson---Howard and adding WRs Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree---that offense is better equipped to win now and the next few years than the Cardinals'...unless Steve Keim can find a way top revitalize the offensive line, add a QBOF and find upgrades at WR.

* Was very impressed with the Raiders' SS Brynden Trawick---who made a number of superb tackles for loss. He's a UFA this year, a promising, aggressive young SS (6-2, 220) and STs ace.

* Mike Vrable, the Texans' LB coach is on the verge of coaching stardom. He will soon be a defensive coordinator and quite likely a head coach within the next 3-4 years.

* Romeo Crennel has to be one of the most under-rated defensive coordinators of all time. The man has 5 Super Bowl rings as a defensive coach.

* Boy those Texans tackle with authority---all of them---no weak links.

* Funny to think that there was speculation about Bill O'Brien's immediate future with the Texans. Much of this has to do with an all too common occurrence in the NFL when a GM (Rick Smith) and HC cannot agree on key personnel. Brock Osweiler was Smith's choice, not O'Brien's.

* This got me thinking about BA&SK's relationship. Yes, on the outside they appear united---but it wouldn't bee too much of a stretch to imagine that there could be a growing acrimony between the two...starting with BA's insistence on running a wide array of zero backfield sets (regardless of who the linemen are). In the games this year where Palmer was sacked and hit the most, the Cardinals were 1-8-1. BA has openly slammed the last two 1st round picks---which makes SK look like a fool. It's to the point now where BA has declared that he no longer expects rookies to make any immediate impact their first year. To that i say, "C'mon, man."

SEA 26 DET 6

* First of all---as crazy as this might sound---the longer the Seahawks' season goes, the more there is a chance of them experiencing the letdown that the Cardinals experienced this year coming off a bitter loss in the NFC Championship game. Last year it was the Seahawks who served the Cardinals notice in Week 17 not to feel too confident about the division and the NFC. Well, this year the Cardinals returned the favor beating the Seahawks in Week 16. Teams have a very hard time recovering from extended playoff game seasons. See Carolina and Denver, as well.

* The Lions' defense was a sieve. They got shredded by what had been a struggling makeshift o-line and a RB who had been averaging 1.5 ypc the past couple games. Rawls runs hard---but he can't hold up physically the way Marshawn Lynch did.

* The Lions' offense looked intimidated all night---so many drops on easy catches, false starts, etc.. Anquan Boldin, who really helped the Lions get over the hump in close games, had an atrocious performance---2 stupid PF flags one off a bad drop on 3rd down. Stafford looked a little wild early but even when he settled down the drops and costly penalties did them in. But, credit the Lions for winning the close games they were losing last year---which is why they got into the playoffs. Too bad they peaked 3-4 weeks ago, however.

* Richard Sherman is right about the Seahawks' play calling. It's just plain stupid at times---and of course they get bailed out on 4th and goal at the 1 by the Richardson TD (amazing catch) where clearly Richardson was grasping the CB's facemask. Seeing as there is supposed to be a review of all scoring plays---can't the NFL finally get the calls right? If everyone in the USA can see it---then get the thing right.

* Sherman, for all his arrogance, puts his body on the line to win and is one of the major reasons why teams are still intimidated by the Seahawks. For those who feel Patrick Peterson was snubbed in not making the 1st or 2nd All-Pro team, tackling and doing all one can to help the team win are considerations.

Who knows what will happen in the playoffs, but the only thing for sure is that this Cody guy will end up happy. (NOTE - got this from the NFL Memes with a hilarious lead-in that unfortunately can't be repeated due to vulgarity).

We threw away the season
There are several teams ahead of us with far less talent around
Too much talking before the season started, nothing is guaranteed in football

Re: Seattle

Why they should feel good:

Getting the running game going.
Theirs is the best defense left in the NFC, and, the remainder are just "ok" -- defense usually wins in the playoffs. If their defense keeps games low scoring, Wilson has enough juice to score late to win.

Why they shouldn't:

I think the running game was a mirage last night. Detroit is charmin soft up front, and, their linebacker play was atrocious. How many times did we see Whitehead run directly into a block four yards deep instead of attacking his gap? Their tackling overall was terrible as well.

Where has the Sea pass rush gone? Another makeshift o-line opposing them (like the Cards version) and until it was late, the pressure wasn't there. If they have a similar showing vs Atl (with no crowd noise on their side) Matt Ryan will have a big day.

At the end of the day: I thought that Detroits receivers let Stafford down. Between the drops and Boldins two personal fouls, at least four or five drives were smothered in the crib. In contrast, Wilsons receivers stepped up for him-- I counted three highlight reel catches with two coming from the the unusual source of Paul Richardson.

Exactly how I'm feeling watching the lousy Dolphins (yes, I know they beat the Cards) stumble around and pretend to be a playoff-caliber team. Felt the same last night--the Lions are just plain bad. The Cards completely wasted this past season.

Agree with all the comments but this one. I don't think there is growing acrimony at all.

Yeah, acrimony might be too harsh a word for what I meant. The thing about BA is that in so many ways he is old school, stubborn and unconventional. It must be difficult to draft for him. I bet the vetting process is going to be much more intense this year because what Steve Keim has to factor in is how suitable the draft picks will be to BA's and the staffs' coaching style.

Looking at the past 4 drafts - it feels like BA's fingerprint on the WRs and one QB selected, and he has character input as well (see Honey Badger). But in All or Nothing, I remember him in the war room during the draft and he seemed out of his element. I'm sure if they were looking at someone that he had reservations about, he would speak up, but he seemed to defer to Keim and the others - it just isn't likely his forte.

I agree with your BA take, BA has much different expectations for young players that want to be on his roster for 4-5 years and that starts to show immediately; they do not get the same leeway as a one year contract player. He has no issue pressuring a first round pick or leaving them on the bench until they start to act like a professional in the BA sense of the word. It may make Keim's job more difficult, but I would be surprised if it is anything more than a minor discomfort relative to back to back 5-11 seasons.

I wasn't impressed by the Raiders WR's in their playoff game. Couldn't catch some really nice passes thrown by Cook.

* Not one valiant effort made from the visiting team in all 4 WC games---in each case the visitors looked like they wanted vacation to happen asap---especially the Giants, whose WRs already took a brief vacation during their prep week for Green Bay. The defensive efforts from all 4 visiting teams were awful. Looked like the Dolphins had no plan against the Steelers' offense---and they had even played the Steelers during the season.

* BA always says "don't be that guy." Well, OBJ is the epitome. Anquan Boldin next in line.

* Games further prove that backup QBs aren't going to win playoff games, which is exactly why Bill Belichick doesn't believe in paying a backup QB $4M a year (better to further invest the $4M in the offensive line to keep the starting QB healthy). Better to groom a young QB who can either take over one day as a starter or be traded to get value in return.

* Tom Coughlin must be feeling somewhat vindicated today---the team never invested in the defense the way it did this off-season, and yet that defense gave Aaron Rodgers all day to throw. Plus, Coughlin was such a stickler for getting good play on STs and the Bobby Rainey gaffe was, I dare say, BA Cardinals-esque (for the past 4 seasons). Reminded me of some of the boneheaded decisions Patrick Peterson has made in key games, like trying to catch a punt into traffic on a full sprint just when the team had started to gain a little momentum---or electing to fair catch a punt on the 3 yard line. Or Ted Ginn, trying to return a kickoff 9 yards deep into the end zone and laying the ball on the turf at the 10 yard line allowing the Panthers to turn a 16-14 game into 23-14 with all the momentum they need from that point forward.

You mean the 87 hits to the head the Fins QB took to the head & the push in the back in the back for OPI by #18 on the Packs Hail Mary didn't change your mind? Lol

Very sad that the reffing crews for the playoffs are mixed crews. Instead of taking full crews that have worked together all season, the NFL in their brilliant minds have decided to create All Star ref crews as a "reward". Just dumb. Plenty of instances where these guys were looking at each other and clueless. Bad idea.

BTW;

Mitch spot on about Vrabel.

"Los Angeles Rams: The Rams will interview Houston Texans linebackers coach Mike Vrabel for their head coaching job, according to The MMQB."
