I thought that Cincy had already used it's waiver position on a safety that was cut by the Chargers. Rogers Beckett, I think it was. So they're at the bottom of the list.

I think that Dallas (you know how Parcells loves the meat up front, and they don't have any) has the best chance to pick him up, but I don't know what their cap situation is.

Anyway, this is as much hot air as on the "Pace Signed!" thread, since it's all academic, and Graves isn't going to pick up a DT. At the end of last season, it was all the talk that we're happy with the situation at DT now.

Also, I can't believe that Shane thinks that Bell is going to be better than W. Bryant.

Well Im not a Wendell Bryant fan that is sure. But to be honest when I thought of that starting front four I completely forgot about good ole Wendell. Hopefully he shines through!

According to Jurecki, Wendell literally lifted Leonard off the ground yesterday.

They'll have some internal 'discussions,' then he'll sign with the Niners.

So did I. It was funny. Sadly though it may be true.

kerouac, I thought Graves was uttering that he was in the market for a DT come June 1 and start of training camp?

I didn't hear that. I heard a lot, especially around the draft, of talk that the front office was very comfortable with thier DT situation, which was a reason why there was no chance of taking Jimmy Kennedy in the draft.

I think that Graves said something along the lines of looking for "depth and playmakers" post-June 1 and after the start of the season (i.e., Fina). As we know, Rod Graves' comments are worth nothing after he says them, so that's meaningless.

Me too, us and our infernal "internal discussions". Why don't other teams discuss?

as of july 7th the only teams with enough cap space are

AZ, Philly, Minn., Houston, N.O., and maybe dallas(they are really close and could make 1 cut to amke it)

So that only leaves Dallas and Houston ahead of us who could make a move according to waiver wire rules.

The guy that Dallas just cut probably didn't count against their cap because he wasn't one of the top 53 guys in salary, correct?

Maybe they'll cut Antonio Bryant to pick up Big Daddy!

Meaning you'd want Bryant? A guy with just as many issues as Boston? That's more farfetched than us getting Wilkinson.

You're damn close, Bratwurst.
The top 51 players count against it.
Here's everything that counts...

Top 51 player contracts, tenders, qualifying offers and offer sheets.
All prorated Signing Bonus, Likely To Be Earned (LTBE) incentives and miscellaneous amounts from remaining players on 80-man roster.
Any earned incentives, prorated Signing Bonus and miscellaneous amounts (Signing Bonus acceleration) from terminated players.
All Paragraph 5 (base salary contract amount) in excess of A/I salary for not drafted rookie free agents In effect from first day of the League Year until prior to start of regular season.

section 8 row 10
Dan Wilkinson
Defensive Line for Free Agent Players
Week Opp Tackles Assists Sacks INT INT TD FR FR TD
2000 3 1 0.00 0 0 0 0
2001 19 6 3.50 2 0 0 0
2002 12 4 0.00 0 0 0 0

These are his stats up to 2002. Last three years not all that impressive. That being said claim him try him out and worst case is you waive him after camp is over. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Since we have so much cap sapce it would be worth the gamble if we have to assume the last year of his contract and overpay him this year. He came into the "Skins camp in shape. We have some pretty talented players in the secondary. Having a big run stuffer on the d-line would greatly aid in Starks, Wilson and Jackson increasing team interceptions.

Exactly - what do the Cards have to lose?

I agree that Wilkinson would be a nice addition. The Foreskins wanted him on the team but at a reduced price so this is not a situation where his value to the team was limited.

Unfortunately I also think the Cards don't pull the trigger on this one for a couple of reasons:

1) It's the Cardinals

2) RG and Mac are feeling good about our current DT's

3) If the Cards do pick him off the waiver wires they now go to the end of the picking order and may miss out on a better or more needed player.

So if the Cards pass on Wilkinson it would be nice if the rant about what an idiot RG is could be kept at a civil level.

I really think that ranting is over - most of us - at least I know I have, got it out of our system yesterday. Although, I don't think #3 is a very good reason only because he IS the type of player we've been looking to add (or IMO should be looking to add) and are we gonna just keep hoping players get cut?

thats pretty much how I feel.

I mean, I've posted before that I think we ought to "roll the dice" on one of these guys that have so called "baggage". who better than big daddy dan wilkinson? there is no way I'm sold on bryant or bell or tanner or anybody else we have at DT.

plus, I want to here mistler scream "big daddy gettin it done!" after he records a sack or TFL.

I guess it gets down to how much of an upgrade Wilkinson would be over the current DT's on the team. If it is a marginal upgrade and the rumor mill has a good CB becoming available then I would want the CB. Of course option 3 is very speculative but not a total impossibility. JMHO.

Cheesey, as far as the rants go I think most of us have been there at one point or another. Last year I was out of control hammering Bidwill (called him Tenderpoorly) about Wendell Bryant's contract negotiations. I'm sure many on this board thought I lost my mind, in some respects I guess I did.

All I'm saying is that I've been there done that myself. It's good to purge the soul at times. The difference for me this year is there are obvious changes taking place in the Cards organization. Certainly there has been dubious choices and or mistakes made, but the overall effort and attitude coming out of the front office is far better than in .... well forever. Is it perfect, hell no. Is it good, time will tell but I'm encouraged. Is it better, absolutely.

To be completely honest there are times I hear the dark side calling and I move toward the voices. Maybe I can resist them at this point because I became a Cards fan in the 70's while living in St. Louis so I have experienced exciting competitive football while rooting for this team. You have one year to hang your hat on, obviously not nearly enough to shield you from the voices. Or maybe you are 100% correct and I've been drinking too much koolaide again. :)
