Abdul Carter is expected to put on a show Friday in State College.
Could it be a No. 1 NFL Draft pick kind of performance?
The dynamic defensive end is the headliner of the Penn State football Pro Day workouts in Holuba Hall, the annual gathering of former Nittany Lions running, lifting weights and doing drills in front of NFL scouts, coaches and front-office types.
He will lead an intriguing mix of front-end stars (tight end Tyler Warren, safety KJ Winston), hopeful draft-risers (safety Jaylen Reed, linebacker Kobe King) and those simply trying to prove they belong (cornerback Jalen Kimber, offensive lineman Sal Wormley).
It's a particularly big opportunity for all, in various ways. Reed was the only one who gave a full-workout at the NFL Combine in late-February. The rest will be showing-out now in front of NFL personnel for the first and possibly only time.
Carter and Warren, in particular, could help cement themselves as high first-round picks at the NFL Draft in late April in Green Bay. To potentially become Penn State's first pair of Top 10 picks in 25 years. Winston must prove he is at full-heath after being sidelined by a knee injury since early September.
The ever-confident Carter expects to highlight the raw skills that make him the most valuable pass rusher and, quite possibly, the most coveted overall player in the nation. And to back up his claims that he is, like Winston, at premium health again. A shoulder injury and stress reaction in his foot kept Carter from working out at the combine.
Carter will be expected to challenge the stunning 40-yard times posted by Penn State premium edge rushers Chop Robinson (4.48 seconds, NFL Combine) and the great Micah Parsons and Odafe Oweh (both 4.39, Pro Day) four years ago.
All were picked in the first round − Parsons (12th), Robinson (21st) and Oweh (31st). Carter is challenging to become the first No. 1 Penn State pick since Courtney Brown − yet another defensive end − in 2000.
Carter and the rest of Penn State's Pro Day contingent will be tested in the 40, vertical and broad jumps, cone and shuttle drills and the bench press. They also will go through various field drills.
"I’m excited to see if and what Abdul Carter runs in the 40-yard dash Friday ...," Sports Illustrated senior NFL writer Albert Breer said this week. "Word is he might be in the 4.3 range, and the Nittany Lions’ track is notoriously fast. So an eye-popping number might come out of State College."

It's all about validating Carter's destructive-force performance throughout Penn State's College Football Playoff season: He totaled 68 tackles and a remarkable 23.5 tackles for loss, 12 sacks and nine quarterback hurries over 16 games.
Many NFL Draft experts are now predicting him to be selected in the first five picks, starting with the Tennessee Titans at No. 1 and the Cleveland Browns, featuring fellow pass rusher Myles Garrett, at No. 2.
