For the past few years when the Cardinals have played the Rams, even though William Hayes was the third DE behind Quinn and Long, I kept thinking that he was better than any edge rusher in AZ. While Hayes isn't a flashy player, he does an excellent job of converting speed to power on his rushes---and he plays with a lunch pail mentality. In that sense I think he would be a valuable player for the Cardinals as a rush DE in the 4 man front. In this day and age teams need 4 edge rushers and I think it would be great to have him as one of them.

Plus, William Hayes' character is something to factor in. If you haven't heard about or seen the video about how he and Chris Long went homeless for a night in order to create an even higher empathy and awareness for homeless people, check this out:

William Hayes is a winner. I would love to see him make his new home in AZ.

some of these teams signing these over priced pass rushers are the same teams that have been shown selecting edge guys in the mocks for the draft. There is a possibility a few of them will now draft elsewhere when their first pick rolls around...which may allow an unexpected player to drop to us at 29. although history shows as a rookie that guy will have to be really special to have an impact in his first year.

I would rather take a chance on Chris Long. Vernon from Miami just had his tag come off so he should be a target as well.

I agree Mitch, he could be a player who helps generate a pass rush. Good call.

B.S. The fifth-best player on his defensive line? (Maybe?) It would depend on what the price tag is, but this guy is no different than Golden, Okafor, or the other guys who will get 5-8 sacks a year while never commanding a double-team.

The #Rams are closing in on a deal to keep DE William Hayes, source said. That's a key piece.

Cardinals did show interest. I read an article a few weeks ago that said that the Rams were adamant about re-signing him.

The Rams also re-signed Mark Barron LB for 9M a year.

What the heck is wrong with the Rams. Geesh 9 M!

That's my point. At some point you have to start looking at guys who can contribute 8 or 9 sacks, and just put them all together. Adding a DE in the draft might be our best option to finding a pass rush this offseason.

Yeah. I think that Hayes is a guy who can get 8 sacks if he's playing next to an NFL DPOY candidate. On this defense, he's another 4-6 sack a year guy.

We will disagree on this I guess. I just believe if we can add enough Hayes type players, we can create a pass rush similar to Carolina, where the whole is better than the sum of it's parts.

Seriously? Do we have a Kuechly? Or a Thomas Davis? Or a Shaq Thompson? :(

Are any of those guys edge rushers or pass rushers?

The point is that there ways to manufacture an effective pass rush without spending 15 mil on Vernon Oliver or giving up a draft to move up and take Shaq Lawson.

No they're not. But that certainly doesn't mean they don't provide a huge assist to the Panthers d-linemen in terms of creating pressure and getting to the QB! A defensive feature the Cards totally lack!

Oh - I TOTALLY agree. Olivier is fools gold and the Giants will look silly when it's all said and done. So no - I am not arguing that the Cards go out and over-spend for a pass-rusher. My HOPE is that they can find our guy(s) in the draft...

So, that makes my point. you can have a pass rush without a premier edge rusher, but you have to have the talent to do so. My argument against the Bruce Irvin's of FA is that they aren't great edge rushers. If I want to win a Formula 1 race, I go and buy a Formula 1 car, but i shouldn't buy a newer Honda Civic to replace my older Honda Civic.

The Cardinals need to add top end players, not just over pay for an edge player who can get 8 sacks per year.

I think I see your point now... Though, FWIW, I'm not so much in favor of "adding a bunch of Hays type players" as I would prefer we add a player or two who are capable of 9-10 sacks individually.
As I think more about this, I can't help but focus more on our pathetic Linebacker situation... Aside from Bucannon, we simply lack any shred of athleticism. I really hope we deal with this issue in some form or fashion...

Keep in mind, 21 players got more sacks than Dwight Freeney last year, and Freeney got 8

JJ Watt, K Mack, E Ansah, C Dunlap, Chandler Jones, Whit Mercilus, M Wilkerson, G Atkins, A Donald, V Miller, K Short, Everson Griffen, Mel Ingram, J Peppers, Mike Bennett, Cam Jordan, Robert Ayers, Fletch Cox, Ryan Kerrigan, C Avril, and G McCoy.

Of those players, only JJ Watt, V miller, Ryan Kerrigan, Everson Griffen, Aaron Donald, and Gerald McCoy also had over 8 sacks in 2014.

Also keep in mind that McCoy and Donald are strictly DTs.

So over the past two seasons, only 4 edge players have had over 8 sacks in back to back seasons.

Some more food for thought. 25 players got over 8 sacks in 2014. 34 over 8 sacks in 2013. 28 in 2012. So, sacks are down despite the number of passes per game being up.

Therein lies the problem.
