I'm ready to kill someone at microsoft. My stupid computer upgraded me to WMP 11 without even asking if I wanted to, and I HATE IT. I want WMP 10 back. Anything I can do? I can feel my blood pressure rising every time I go to use it.

Oh, and be sure to do this, so it does not happen again.

To disable the Windows Media Player 7.0 or later automatic update checks by editing the registry, use these steps:

1. Start the Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
2. Locate the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
4. TypeWindowsMediaPlayer, and then press ENTER.
5. With the WindowsMediaPlayer key selected, on the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
6. Type DisableAutoUpdate, and then press ENTER.
7. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
8. Type 1, and then click OK.
9. Quit the Registry Editor.

I thought that WMP only upgrades to WMP11 if you select it using Microsoft Update?

Nope. I am still running WMP10 on my machine here at work. I haven't used it in a while, but it did ask me if I wanted to install the update. It is not selected in my Microsoft Update.

That's strange. I am also still running WMP10 but WMP11 is listed under Optional Software in Microsoft Update for me.

You can install the update that way, but also launching an order version can prompt you to upgrade as well.

If you add that value to the registry, the player will no longer ask you for updates. I believe that the Windows Update will still work though.

What I'm so angry about is that it didn't even ASK me if i wanted to upgrade. Some dumb screen popped up telling me I needed to register it--as soon as I did- WMP11. I uninstalled it just now & it claims to have rolled back to the previous version. I got wrapped up in work emergencies, so I haven't gotten to do the regedit thing yet. I am doing that before I even start wmp again.
