Its one thing to say on your show -- "hey -- thats kind of bush league. In the NFL, for everyone's benefit, there is a gentleman's agreement that in the preseason, schemes are vanilla."

As long as he wasn't whining about it...fine. I have no desire to listen to the archive because I really have a difficult time listening to Wolfley. As long as Whisenhunt says he used it as a learning tool, then all is good from there.

As for the rest, I stand by the fact that Wolfley's little rant or whatever it was is about the lamest thing I have seen in some time.

I'm with you. Wolfey's rant is one of the lamest rants I have seen in quite some time. I have listened to Rob and Rex Ryan at coaching conferences,and they both are excellent defensive coaches. As for the "46" ,Rob used the Cover 7 out of the 46 almost every down last year except that he ran it out of the 4-3 instead of the "46" front. Wolfey clearly knows little about the "46" defense. The front changes with the offensive formations, any one back set it is very familiar with the 3-4 except both guards and center are covered. Rob's first year at Oakland he ran some "46" , as New England did when he coached on their SuperBowl teams as linebacker coach.

What is most amazing is that most people think that Buddy ran the "46" every down. He was a 4-3 coach 75% of the time. The "46" even in it's heyday was a change of pace defense. It was never implemented on an every down basis. I viewed the game and he never ran any of the big time blitzes that are in the "46" package. If he did everyone viewing would have noticed.

As for Buddy, he should have been fired. He made poor decisions in free agency and hired a total incompetent in Dave Atkins as Offensive Coordinator. However, what he said to Bidwill is technically correct and quite funny. Didn't people accuse him of nepotism? Hasn't Bidwill benefited from nepotism? Haven't his sons proven themselves to be outstanding coaches? Rex was ranked number 1 , and Rob was ranked number 3 last year in total defense. When was the last time the Cards were ranked that high? Was it in 94? Wolfey needs to find a new line of work if he is going to complain about something as trivial as another team running a front the Cards were not expecting.

Please tell me Wolfley wasn't referring to Ryan's defense as a 4-6. A 4-6 is ... I dunno, I guess a Cover 1 when a lot of underneath zone coverage. THE 46 defense is a Cover 1 corner pressure scheme where the strong safety is moved around to blitz with entire front 7. Two very different looks, with the second being named after Doug Plank's jersey number, NOT the front look of the scheme.

I would suspect Wofley was primarily complaining that Ryan broke an unwritten rule in NFL, which is you don't install your blitz packages in the first two preseason games. It's exhibition rules (no blitzing). I didn't see Oakland complain about the stunting the Cards were doing.
