Problem is almost the same as letting him leave--

who plays left tackle?

Franchise him, tell him we need him to play LT until our first round draft pick, Thomas, is ready to take over at LT. Then, we will slide him to LG where he belongs, and James busts out for 1600 for the season..........:koolaid:

I'm afraid that by doing that you create a hole at left tackle.

I suppose you could move Wells to left tackle ( he has played decently there when needed) but any shuffling would have someone playing out of position.

Maybe this would work:
LT - Wells or FA/draftpick
LG - Davis
C- Lechey or FA/Draftpick
RG - Milford Brown
RT - Deuce.

Deuce did play RT at times at USC, but I'm not certain that his footwork would work at the NFL level.

The only problem I see with him is that during the SD game, even though he was pulling I think to block Merrian he kept lowering his head hoping to take him out only to see shawn leap over him. He got out there quick enough but.........

Shawn Merriman is a freak. He beats everybody. I'm no fan of Leonard Davis, but putting David up against Goliath, Goliath is going to win 9 out of 10.

(Goliath referring to Merriman's talent, not Davis' mass)

first of all it is a big mistake to franchise big. leanard davis can be easlily be resigned without the franchise tag. as far as i am concern he wasn't worth 10 million dollars that the cardinals paid him. how many drives has davis killed in scoring position with his false starts. these were home games. i say give him to the competention. i am sure he is a great guy, but his mistakes are costing the cardinals win.

Easily resigned? This isn't Madden 07, he has to want to be here. All indications are that he doesn't. He'll get a huge FA contract somewhere else, somewhere he'll want to play. The franchise tag is the only true sure-fire way to make sure you retain him, but it comes at a hefty price, about $11 mill a year for an offensive lineman this coming year.

hence the move to guard, his true position.

Lets do more shuffling because it has worked so well in the past...

All anyone ever did was complain about the line. Then when we have a unit that finally plays well people want to mess with it? That makes no sense what so ever.

The O-line, IMO, is built from the inside out. As soon as the middle was fixed the tackles played better.

So you want Gorin to start?

We have to go into the offseason with the knowledge that Joe Thomas will be very unlikely to last until 5 and that LD is about the only good OT on the market

It could play out this way:
1. Try to negotiate a long term deal.
2. If no deal Franchise him.
3. Continue to negotiate a long term deal.
4. If still unsucessful, cut him as late as possible, making it tough for him to get a lot of offers as many other team's rosters will have been set. If he doesn't want to be a Card don't make it easy for him to walk away.

first of all if big wants to be here then it going to be easy to resign him without having to use the franchise tag. another question you need to ask yourself why would you want to franchise a person who doesn't want to be here. everyone on this board has talked about cancers in the locker room. that is exactly what leanard davis would become if he is franchised. then you are stuck with the same situation next season, because davis isn't going to sign a long term deal. another thing big isn't worth a franchise tag. i say let some other team sign him. just because he is the best option so far this season doesn't mean he is the best option. so let some other team carry his inconsistant play. they say in the nfl if you are inconsistant than you are not good.

Being the only decent OT on the market, you have to pay him ALOT just to keep him from hittin the open market

another question you need to ask yourself why would you want to franchise a person who doesn't want to be here. everyone on this board has talked about cancers in the locker room.

Because you can then TRADE him. If he doesn't want to be here that badly, you trade his ass and get something in return

Its called covering your ass and having a plan. Things that are foreign to the Cardinals organization and exactly why we have 10+ losses year after year after year.

Other then a rumor started here NOTHING has pointed to BIG being a cancer. Nothing. ZIP

that is exactly what leanard davis would become if he is franchised. then you are stuck with the same situation next season, because davis isn't going to sign a long term deal. another thing big isn't worth a franchise tag. i say let some other team sign him. just because he is the best option so far this season doesn't mean he is the best option. so let some other team carry his inconsistant play. they say in the nfl if you are inconsistant than you are not good.

Or you're not properly coached. What Big needs is a disciplinarian HC that will get in his ear and tell him that if he continues to make false starts that they will bench his ass (and then if he continues to actually do it).

I'm sick of going into offseasons praying for miracles that if we wish upon a star or something that all of our needs will be fixed. You don't fix a team that has holes by ADDING NEW ONES.

Ideally you keep Big after franchising him and draft an OT later in the draft, then if Big gets better then you sign an extension. If not you have someone that can fill in.

Davis will not be a Cancer or make a fuss making 11+ Mill, which once he signs the franchise tender is gauranteed.

Franchise him and tell him we(Cards) will let him go at the end of the 2007 unless he changes his mind and wants to stay (because, well damn it we will be deep into the playoffs!!). Leave him right were he is along with everyone else and add depth to the o-line.

I don't know how many times I have heard people preach about letting the O-line gel but everyone feels players need to be moved here and there. The line played well over the last seven games (most here have made that observation) so why would you want to change it? If the O-line progressed over the last few games I would assume it will continue into next year as well.

Draft a LT and hope he can replace LD by the end of next season.
