Would we have been better off trying to sign Hutch and Bently instead of Edge?

I think Edge will be a good signing but I usually feel that the offensive line is the biggest key to a running back (doesn't hurt to have a good oline for your qb either. I like how Denver can usually just plug in a running back and they do well.

Our running backs were hit often times behind the line of scrimmage even though our opponents had to mostly defend against the pass. I thought our line looked horrible last year.

I know those two olinemen would have been expensive but I think we had enough cap space for it and I would have probably front loaded the contract much like Edges'.

Running backs in the draft often excel quickly too, often times much more quickly than olinemen, and running backs often wear down more quickly in their careers too. Do you guys think we'll be better with a 28 yr old Edge and our oline we have now or with Hutch, Bentley a young Lendale White and maybe another vet that's long in the tooth? Runyan for instance? Who knows are other running backs might have looked good behind that line...

Hutch and Bentley?

If we were guaranteed to get WHite Maybe. But its a moot point since we in no way could have afforded both nor guaranteed they would have come here.

Im ECSTATIC ABOUT EDGE!

Considering Hutch will get 7 Mil a year and Bentley is getting 6 mil. per year, I doubt we could have afforded both.

NO.

Why you ask.

Because neither Bentley or Hutch were coming here.

Bentley had his sites set on Cleveland the whole time, that is where he is from and where he could get the most money. This was a low OL market which ment high prices and a lot of people fighting for their services.

And Hutch will get matched by the Hawks up to anything 10 Mill or less on the first year of the contract. No way would I want that contract for a OG, no matter who it was.

It was also a high RB market with a lot of options for teams which ment we were the only team with money that could have made a real offer to Edge and still be in a good situation surrounded by other talented offensive weapons.

If the money would have been close Bentley would have still went home to Cleveland. The Seahawks would have matched any offer of ours to him. Unless we offered 8 million bones a year for a guard

........and even if they were, you'd still have Arrington ducking underneath hits.

Ok maybe you guys are right.. I'm not so sure we couldn't have gotten both though, I think we had enough money for them this year..how much did we have, 21 million? Yeah it sounds crazy for two oline and maybe a couple of cheap vets, but I'm not totally sure that we wouldn't be a better team next yr because of it.

I wantd Bentley as much as anyone but interior linemen just aren't worth that much. You'll see it on draft day.It will be awhile until any interior linemen get chosen. That's also why you rarely see an elite tackle hit the open market.Spending a combined 15-20 million in bonusses for guards/centers in ridiculous. Those kind of bonusses are for the skilled positions.

Well said c-bus.

I also think you factor in where they want to play.

Hutch wanted or had no problem in staying and Bentley may wished for a return to O-H-I-O.

Besides we all know a Wolverine and a Buckeye playing side-by-side could be a problem.

Have you seen the ESPN commercial c-bus where the guy jumps out of a moving vehicle when he finds out his blind date is a Wolverine?

Right, neither Bentley or Hutch were planning visits here. Even if they were they weren't gonna sign more than likely.

We made the best move we could have. And there was no guarantee on White being there also. He probobly would have been but stranger things have happened on pro days. This way we're guaranteed a star running back and he just advanced this team a yr. ahead just by him being on it (James).

...and Marcel Shipp taking ten minutes to get to the corner.

If we signed Bentley and Hutch we'd be putting all our eggs in the basket of a rookie RB for a second consecutive year. Yeah, Lendale or Deangelo are much better prospects than Arrington ever was but they still have more question marks than Edge.

Is Denver really a good example? They don't really have any huge name o-lineman much less the two highest priced FA's from any respective year do they? Coaching, depth and scheme are what Denver's o-lineman are all about. New England and Atlanta are both in the same type of category. I don't think you necessarily need a big name FA, just the right fit for what you're trying to do.

I haven't seen that one yet. It sounds like it would be pretty funny.
