I don't like Becht but I've always liked Jordan. He's not in Portis' league but if they want a pass rusher, Ellis should certainly help.

I dont like this on soooooo many fronts.

First, I thought they were moving Abraham to LB? If so, that leaves Bryan Thomas at DE, that doesnt scare anyone. If they move Abraham back to DE then, they leave a huge hole in the LB corps.

If they could somehow swap 1st rounders with the Skins and grab Taylor it all might be worth it though. They could potentially have the best secondary in the NFL.

I agree with Russ on Jordan, he might be the best 2nd stringback in the NFL. He just needs a chance to play. He always produces when he gets in the game.

Becht is serviceable and is good in the red zone but nothing to loose sleep over IMO

Wow. I would take this trade over Denver's proposal.

You get:

1) A good pass rusher (huge need for Washington).

2) A tight end that's substantially better than anything Washington has.

3) A potential starting running back.

And Washington STILL gets to keep their top pick, and adds more flexibility to who they can take.

I'd still take the Denver deal. You get a superstar for a superstar. Not players who are good, or potential starters but a bonefide superstar.

And, incidentally, the reported deal from denver doesn't include first round picks; Washington would give Bailey and their second for Portis.

That's not the whole deal, Betts and the Skins 2nd are also going back the other way. It was also proposed last week and the Skins didn't bite.

The Skins should do this. They already got most of the Jets team last year. This would finish the job.

Just call them the Jetskins.

The thing is that each of those players are in the final years of their contracts, and so they'll have to negotiate new deals with all of them.

Furthermore, Bect and Ellis (I think) are both former 1st-rounders, and so that'll be an onion in the ointment, as well.

If I were the Jets, I'd throw in a second-rounder, and see if the Redskins bite. They need to build their defense a little more, but Bailey would help. The trade as it stands now just favors the Jets too much.

I didn't realize it involved Betts. I hadn't heard that mentioned at all--and in fact I was listening for it.

And did you mean the Skins are also getting the Broncos' second (swapping seconds?). I ask because I mentioned that in my post, but you said it was "going back the other way."

I still say the important part of this deal for the Skins is getting a player of close to equal value for Bailey in Portis. The other stuff is just window dressing (or gravy, depending on which analogy you like better).

No, I was talking about what Pasq said the Jets offered the Skins.

It was Bailey, Betts, and the Skins 2nd for Ellis, Jordan, and Becht

"Last week, the New York Jets offered their own blockbuster proposal to the Redskins. In return for Bailey, running back Ladell Betts and Washington's second-round pick, the Jets agreed to send a package of players that included Pro Bowl defensive end Shaun Ellis, tight end Anthony Becht and running back LaMont Jordan."

http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36~86~1975250,00.html

The stuff coming out today on the Bailey-Portis trade is that the Skins 2nd is going w/ Bailey. The only hold up right now is Denver is finalizing their deal with Bailey. They got Wilson signed this afternoon, which is what they wanted to do first. I think it's just a matter of time now before the CP-CB deal is agreed upon.

Maybe on paper but when you look at it from a scheme perspective this would really hurt the Jets. They are essentailly trading a pro-bowl CB for a pro-bowl DE, an average TE, and a potential pro-bowl RB.....Yes Jordan is that good!

I just dont see this deal going down. The Jets would really have to reload their defense in order to pull this off, and they dont have enough cap space or draft picks to do so. Remember their run defense was atrocious last year, and Abraham has been moved to LB.

Plus, the Jets play a cover 2 defense. Unless they change the way the secondary plays, getting Bailey, w/o allowing him to play man-to-man, negates his value and what he is good at.

All these former Jets.........they won squat when they were all together before and I suspect they would win squat as Redskins. Remember the old expression of "other people's trash turning into other's prized possessions".....only in this case it wouldn't be the case.

Being totally objective, I think the Denver scenario is what is best for both teams....the Broncos need Bailey (Deltha O'Neal is through as a CB) and the Redskins need a powerful RB like Portis. It is a trade that is benefiscial to both teams.

To be honest, why the Redskins are willing to throw in a high 2nd rounder escapes me.

True, but the Jets switched Ds this season, firing their D-coordinator. I expect them to play much less cover-2 (they didn't have the LBs or safeties for it, anyway) in 2004.

I don't like Lamont Jordan as much as you do, so I guess that's why the trade looks different to me.

Since when was Portis a "powerful" RB? He's more of a shifty speedser. The main drawback is that he's too small/not tough enough.

They switched D's to a 4-3 but, according to Edwards, would still play cover-2 in the secondary. Hell thats the defense he is know for. However, I suspect your right, if you get someone like Bailey, you dont stick him in a cover-2 secondary.

Jordan could be a great RB. Pro bowl? well maybe I went overboard b/c, like we all know, its more than just producing, it is also the ability to play through a 16-game season and Jordan hasnt shown he can be a feature back and do that.

But he is solid and consistently produces when called upon. He has the talent to be a pro bowler I should have said.

kerouac9,

I think powerful is an appropriate adjective to describe someome who rushes for 1600+yards.........but if it makes you happy, I'll re-phrase this to say powerfully effective

or

1. An average DE.

2. A 1st round disappointment.

3. A decent back-up.

Aren't these guys all high picks... and therefore have high salaries?

He plays bigger than he is. The first guy usually isn't going to bring him down if they go at him from the front, however it seems that a strong gust of wind could take him down if it hits him in his side.
