Agreed.

Thus why I disagree with this "need for speed" and need for little quick WR. We need a big body, with good hands.

I would like the Cardinals to take a flyer on Mike Williams of Seattle, whom I doubt will be returning to the Seahawks next season. They guy is a huge WR at 6'5" & 235lbs.
I wouldn't get too picky over size or speed (although it couldn't hurt). Just give me someone who can be trusted to consistently make clutch grabs.

I guess my thinking is that the 3rd or 4th WR is not going to be a focal point of the offense so I want a guy who brings an added/different dimension to the offense that causes the defense to, at least, think about the deep threat. I agree deep threats mostly aren't relevant in the red zone but the Cards have Fitz, the TE's, and Roberts/Doucet to man that role. To me, Williams adds nothing that a healthy Heap, King, or Housler could add.

This is what I agree with. We need to add players that bring a different dimensions to our offense. Size and speed matchups are key in the NFL and offenses like New England, New Orleans, Green Bay and New York Giants show how you can exploit these matchups without spending 1st rounders or huge FA money. Hopefully Housler can develop into a threat vs linebackers and safeties similar to other athletic TEs in the league. This coupled with an mid level threat like Andre Roberts, short level threats in Heap/King/R Williams, and one of the best WRs in the game could be very difficult to defend. If you added a role player that could stretch the field vertically, you would increase your number of big plays and free up Fitzgerald to vary his route combinations.

An easy example of this is the int Antrel Rolle had vs the Cards this season. Because there was not a legitimate deep threat for the Cardinals, Rolle was able to cheat towards Fitzgerald's deep route and make the pick. If there was a threat opposite of Fitzgerald, it would either hold Rolle more towards the middle of the field, or allow the QB to burn Rolle for cheating over. Granted on that specifc play the ball was thrown poorly, but the concept is solid.

I actually believe throughout the year Roberts developed into that role, however he just doesn't have the speed to be a credible threat to a deep safety. Short to mid level though he has progressed nicely.

(Note - I don't think that necessarily means a high profile dude - once upon a time before they were drafted, nobody knew very much about Wes Welker or Reggie Wayne or Cruz).

uh, reggie wayne was a first round selection out of miami. people knew who he was.

Would love to add Laurent Robinson because I believe he is the best WR that will hit FA. The Cowboys are already shored up for paying Wide Receivers. They have Dez Bryant and Miles Austin. Robinson will walk onto another team.

IF WE GET PEYTON, bring in Reggie Wayne and Jeff Saturday. The first year for QB's on new teams are always rough. Lets make the transition easy by giving him his line playcaller in Jeff Saturday, and a receiver that knows where Peyton likes to play in Reggie Wayne.

I was just going to post the same thought. Reggie is going to be 34 years this year. He no longer will get a big contract but would be a nice sign if we get Peyton. He would team well with Fitz as Boldin did and be a reliable target for Peyton. Give him a two year deal with team option for a third. Maybe $3million per year.

I don't see why so many people here want us to use our 1st on a WR. Of all the teams, I would've guessed Cardinal fans would be the most aware of how overrated having two great WRs was. The Fitz + Boldin combo was together for six seasons, and the team didn't start to have success until season five, and whenever Boldin was out during the period of success, the offense didn't miss a beat. Our line has always sucked and our defensive pressure was always sporadic. We were able to hide that by having an elite QB, but now our guys are Kolb and Skelton.

More on topic, what our WR corps lacks is elite speed. We have our superstar in Fitz, we have a guy who can get the 3rd down catch in Doucet, but we don't have the guy who can split the defense open. Two guys in FA that would fulfill the speed role are Robert Meachem or DeSean Jackson. DeSean would demand the big contract, but I think Meacham would be the best overall option. Edit: I also think that Mario Manningham will be the odd man out in New York and would jump at the opportunity to line up alongside Fitz. We can find a good #2 in this FA class, but the last thing we need is waste a pick on one.

...and the ability to catch. There were a lot of dropped passes
...and an OC. With the right plays, you don't need to run a 4.2 40 as a WR to create space

But you can say that about every position on the Cardinals. :(

We had a first round QB who hardly played in 4 years and was so bad he was let go for nothing and is now 2nd string. We had an elite pass rusher in Simeon Rice. No success. We had 3 first round draft picks on the offensive line at the same time, no success. We had a first round RB who went over 10,000 rushing in his career and another who won comeback player of the year twice, no success with either of them. The team has been bad for so many years if we based our draft picks on the success we had in the past we wouldn't want to draft anybody.

On the other hand maybe you and K9 are right. The one thing you can say consistently about this franchise is that they have had great individual success with their wide receivers. Even David Boston holds the franchise record for most receiving yards in one season. 1,598 yards.

Mal Kutner*,Sonny Randle, Bobby Joe Conrad, Mel Gray**, Roy Green, Boldin, Fitz. Now there's some players. Even the second tier guys: Frank Sanders, Pat Tilley, Ricky Proehl, Steve Breaston.

And they almost never won.

* An excellent example of how the NFL game has changed. Mel Gray, a 4 time pro-bowler and 1 time All-Pro, never had 1000 yards receiving in one season.

* 1946 NFL Rookie of the Year and one NFL MVP award in 1948 when he had 943 yards receiving and caught 14 TD passes. In 1948!

Very good post.

I am not sure people are stuck on a WR at the 13th spot, I think they are looking at BPA. There will be some really great WR talent at number 13, amongst other positions, IMO. If Upshaw, Hightower, Martin, or DeCastro is at 13 I would hope the Cardinals pick one of those talents over a WR, unless he is truly the BPA.

Of course, per posts above, I don't agree with the speed aspect, or need on this team at WR.
