I would sure like to know the criteria here. It seems projects are being picked and chosen. I think that's why you have some actors pissed off at not being able to promote their stuff. If I was an actor I would be pissed too. Seems like it should be all or nothing.

From what I've read prior it looks like the production has to be independent, no ties for anything to any of the major studios or properties. They also have to agree to retroactively abide by the new contract.

To me, doing this does muddy the waters a bit. There's too much inside baseball for the general public to understand why A is allowed and B isn't and it creates inconsistent messaging to the public.

it's a divide and conquer strategy. A24 (and others who have gotten the waiver) isn't part of the AMPTP, so if they agree to SAG's demands, the actors get what they think they deserve and that undercuts the big studios, watching their movies get shelved, while these others move forward.

@cheesebeef is this a positive event or are the studios screwing around where they're trying to make it look legit to the public while it's really not? The article sounds positive but doesn't mean it is. The way they describe the viewership metrics for streaming would give me pause but that could be on the article author. Minutes/hours viewed isn't concrete enough for me with the way they've been manipulating that stat.

There was supposed to be a media blackout and our union got an email saying they would NOT throw around any terms to us until they were ready to bring us a deal they thought we could vote on.

So, I think these leaks are definitely coming from the AMPTP side trying to show they’re being reasonable. But they’re the ones who asked for a media blackout and are now leaking details and meetings take place.

So, basically who knows? BUT, the fact that they are meeting again is at the very least positive news that something is happening. What that leads to is anyone’s guess but it’s better than zero negotiation for three months.

I have been seeing advertising on all the streaming sites I use. The studio is sure pushing Blue Beetle. It looks similar to Ms. Marvel on Disney Plus.

AI-generated art can't be copyrighted federal judge rules, with potential consequences for Hollywood

Source: Business Insider

A federal judge ruled that a piece of art generated by AI can't be copyrighted, a decision that could have consequences for Hollywood studios. The lawsuit, first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, was brought against the US Copyright Office by plaintiff Stephen Thaler, in an attempt to list his own AI system as the sole creator of an artwork called "A Recent Entrance to Paradise."

Thaler has previously filed other lawsuits related to AI inventions, such as listing his AI machine as an inventor in a patent application. In Friday's ruling, US District Judge Beryl Howell upheld the Copyright Office's decision to reject Thaler's copyright application.

She said humans are an "essential part of a valid copyright claim" and "human authorship is a bedrock requirement of copyright." "Plaintiff can point to no case in which a court has recognized copyright in a work originating with a non-human," Howell added.

The judge also cited the famous "monkey selfie" case, in which photographer David Slater was sued for claiming copyright on an image that a crested macaque took with Slater's camera. The court found that non-humans don't have any legal authority for copyright claims.

If the studios did some human editing on an AI script would that qualify as IP?
From the ruling, it would seem only the edited parts.

ANYTHING created by AI is not copyrightable. There is no intellect to make it intellectual property.

Can the creator of the AI algorithm (ChatGPT) claim a copywright? Now THAT would make things interesting.
