When you get this kind of a report, it means that you do NOT have a serious #2 WR on your roster...UGH!!!

Cardinals | Musical chairs at No. 2 receiver?
Thu, 18 Aug 2011 22:28:50 -0700

Arizona Cardinals WR Andre Roberts has been working as the No. 2 receiver in the starting lineup, but the Cardinals may not have a true set No. 2 this season. While Roberts is going to get his share of playing time, WR Early Doucet and others may be involved, too, as the Cardinals are likely to mix things up at the second starting spot opposite WR Larry Fitzgerald.

I have no concern. Roberts is solid, Doucet can be, Williams and Sampson should step up. Isaih or however u spell it looks good. I see playoff teams with pure crap at WR dunno why we are so damn concerned. Our #2 WR is T. HEAP!

While I would have liked the Cardinals to aquire a legitimate #2 threat at WR, I agree with Big that Todd Heap is going to demand attention from opposing safeties.

Todd Heap hasn't had more than 600 yards (in an offense that actually USES the TE) in over 4 years. He's a complimentary piece, not a bona-fide #2.

Kolb tweeted out yesterday that Roberts was killing it in camp.

Roberts is the #2 but Early Doucet will get playing time as well. Not sure why that is an issue.

doucet's made of glass and apparently a big problem last week was other than Fitz, Kolb had problems finding the other WRs getting open. hopefully that changes as we get further into the pre-season and regular season.

Kolb had trouble finding them open. That isnt the same as WR's cant get open. Both Kolb and Coach said he missed Roberts open a few times.

I heard Philly's system is 7-9 step drop backs, vs the Cards, which is 3-5. So he has less time to get the ball out of his hands. He's probably locking onto Fitz (naturally) and then not feeling like he has enough time to progress through his reads. That should improve with time.

Yup. This is the one thing I think we are gonna have to grow with Kolb. Im betting he will lock onto just Fitz a little more than he should to start the season. Which IMO is normal when you are in a new system and need a bit of a security blanket out there. Who better than Fitz?

Shane, what did you see of the WRs when you were out there?

Honestly I see a group of young WR's who all have good size and hands. Roberts is Quick/shifty rather than fast. Doucet needs to stay healthy for sure because all the others are young and unproven.

Although I will say it is hard to not get excited watching Stephen Williams, Demarco Sampson and Isiah Williams... They all look so good and smooth out there. They all have good size and I didnt see any of them drop a single pass while I was there. But to see any of that translate to the regular season will be another story as we all know.

I wish we would have gotten a true speedster but oh well.

Last year we were told that we had capable QB's. We should be used to being fooled. I think Roberts can be a very good WR, but is he a #2 in his second year out of a small school? If he was a physical freak, I would say yes, but he appears to be more of a project player that will have to learn a lot before he can truly be an option every snap.

Well summed up.

Of course I am rooting for NJ's own Isiah Williams :D

One isn't born to the role. You earn it.

And as Whiz has explained; It's not so much one and two, but the ability to run a certain route tree. They see in Roberts and Doucet the ability to run the short to intermediate; the curls... and the over the middle stuff. Whether it's one w/o or a committee, I'm not concerned. At least one, I suggest, will have more than Breaston's 47 catches from last season.

That's fine, but at this point, we don't know if we have a WR that can do that. We're HOPING we do, but we don't know. Topping Breaston's 47 catches from last season is pointless; he was injured and we had terrible QBs. If our #2 receiver only gets 50 or so catches, we are in serious trouble.

I mean, let's face it. Our team is taking a huge gamble here. We really need 3 young WRs to step it up and play well...not 1, not 2, but 3 (we play a lot of 4-wide sets). Or we need Doucet to stay healthy (doesn't seem likely). Or Stuckey to play above his level. Like I said, this is a huge gamble. That doesn't mean it can't pay off, but the odds aren't high IMO.

You have to put the TE's into the equation this year.

Fwiw, Kolb himself said after the game that Roberts was open and he failed to get him the ball.

I don't think it's a huge gamble. IMO, it's no more of a gamble than bringing in someone from the outside that has minor off the field issues or is a mild distraction in the clubhouse or might not completely fit your system. At some point, you have to put some faith in your ability to draft and develop players. Granted, this organization has been less than stellar when it comes to those areas but it's not like they can just give up because of past failures.

I am aware of that. Much as I love Heap, Cheesie was correct--he hasn't had a good year for quite some time. King isn't a receiver. Housler is a very raw rookie. I have hopes for this squad, but that's all they are--hopes.

You needed to add a smilie to that one, Joe, unless you think we're the Patriots.

Developing players is one thing, but relying on raw players too quickly is quite another. Relying so much on constantly injured players is quite another too.

Filling roster holes - like a no. 2 WR - is one reason you have training camp.

Following the logic of not believing the Card brass because they were wrong about QB last year suggests that the only way you'd be happy with Kolb would be if Wiz and his people said he sucked.
