1)Sign McCarron, once he wins his grievance against the Bungles

2) Keim & Co should identify the QB they like best in this draft, then do everything it takes to get him

Worry about the rest once you have your QB! That QB is priority numero uno

@GimmedaBall, @oaken1 and I have been fighting the good fight against each others' QB views for weeks, if not months now. It was a joke.

Nonetheless, it's an argument that is going to continue on this board for weeks to come since we don't have much else to talk about. Chill dude.

This is pretty much the only line I hate from anyone posting here. "Identifying your guy," and "doing everything it takes to get him," are not phrases that work together. Our guy, who should be the top pick, is not going to be available. We need to accept as a team, and as fans, that there is going to be a great deal of compromise in who we are able to draft. It will probably be a prospect that needs to be "coached up."

We can do "whatever it takes" to get Cousins, but we can't really do that in the draft.

Got any GM moves of your own to suggest?

Why not start a private conversation with oaken1 and take the weeks-long squabble there? Then you won't have to derail the rest of the forum topics with your private debate and bore the rest of us. Plenty of others do have other things to talk about.

Cut Matthieu ,Gresham,Dawson,trade Nkemdiche.Restructive Veldheer,Iupati ,Shipley,Mauro,Bucannon .If they won`t restructure then sayanora.
Sign a caretaker QB (Matt Moore or Bridgewater (if passes extensive physical and is a FA).Draft QBOF with Round 1 pick trade if needed to move up.Draft Best CB or OLINE in RD 2-3.BPA rest of draft.

In just your three cut you have created 20 mil in dead cap space. That would take out 178 million cap next year (allegedly) to 158 mil.

I would inform every vet that every position is up for grabs. And that from here on out we will be looking for starters who are willing and able to play and/or improve to an all-pro caliber player.

1. Get Foles or Bradford or the like for QB
2. Draft late round QB
3. Trade 1.15 for Browns 2.3, 2.32, 3.1
4. Trade 2.3 to Niners for 2..27 % 3.6
5. Trade 2.32 to GB for 3.12 & 4.14
6. Trade 5.15 to Oak for 6.10 & 7.9
7. Now with 10 picks 2.15, 2.27, 3.1, 3.6, 3.12, 3.15, 4.14, 6.10, 7.9, 7.15 our draft could look something like:
Jesus, someone has been playing around with a mock draft simulator for way too long!

OP said we can't criticize each other, but he's not my real dad, so let's fight! It's nothing new. Let's have the argument again.

Why do you want to trade up into the top 3 to grab a QB that at least 1-3 NFL teams deemed not worth a top pick when they are in strong to desperate need of a quarterback?

Dude... if this board existed back during the QB draft class in 1984, you’d be shouting the same. Prob advocated for the Cards to skip on Big Ben and Rivers back in 2004 too because god forbid they weren’t the 1st or 2nd QB on the board.

By almost ALL accounts this is the strongest QB draft in years. Getting the third QB could be great.

I'm 100% on board with this being a strong QB class, which is exactly why I don't want to blow up our draft and future to panic and try to move up into the top 3 from #15. But if the Browns who have no one at the position, the Giants, who have the best position to improve their franchise for the long term that they might ever have, and the Colts, who have Jacoby Brissett and the world's living question mark, to pass on a QB and let us have him? And to move to #15 when the Broncos and Jets are just a few picks back from the spot? Man, I just can't buy that. I can buy that the depth of the draft provides us with a little bit of luck and a guy we can groom.

But the argument to move up into the top 3 is that we're going to snag our own personal Elway, Kelly, or Marino, and in fact those guys weren't picked in the top 3. If we move up into the top 3 and get Blackledge, Eason, or even O'Brien, we're in bad shape with the move.

Stay patient and don't sell the farm is my only argument.

But you’re willing... actually screaming for us to sell the farm and kill our cap by giving a QB (who’s at BEST top 10 and arguably only amongst an okay group of 10-15 QBs ALL of which are a far cry from elite) what would likely be a record/cap Killing contract that wouldn’t allow us to upgrade anywhere else and acting like people are insane for thinking that’s a bad idea.

This. Though I think their cap space is closer to $100mill, but either way they could have a lot of space in 2019. Obviously, that'll change this off-season too. If I'm GM, I've got my eye at 2019. Do what you need to draft the QB you want and sign a bridge QB, then start with a clean slate for 2019. Such a McCown. I wouldn't sign any big, rich, long term contracts this year.

Having only been following the team for the last year after being a Chargers fan for 25 years I would do the following...

1. Cut: Dawson, Mauro, A Peterson and all other dead wood

2. Restructure, but if not cut: Bucannon, Veldheer, Iupati

3. Restructure: Mathieu (attempt to at least)

4. Trade: Gresham for late pick - 6th/7th (if he doesn't go then we are stuck with him)

5. Re-Sign: Jaron Brown, Niklas, K Williams, Gabbert, Bynes, Martin, Boone, T Williams, X Williams, Pierre.

6. FA signings (23m in cap) - Norwell OG, Lotulelei DT, Moncrief WR, Attaochu DE/LB, Matt Slauson OG/OC, Kyle Fuller CB

7. Draft (assumptions are that Cousins went to a top 10 pick team).

1: Mayfield/Darnold QB (giving up 1st, 3rd, 5th and next years 2nd - according to draft value chart we can move up to 5th with those)
2: Mark Andrews TE
Draft on out with BPA in WR/CB/LB

Start our rookie QB straight away and have another mediocre season, the following year draft big in OL, WR and make a run

Is Gresham part of the future of this team?I don`t think so.Dawson can be replaced cheaper and younger.Matthieu just plain can`t cover and is vastly overpaid for his production.Trade Nkemdiche for a ldraft pick (whatever you can get for him..he just plain was nowhere worth his pick).Any other veteran who won`t restructure then try and trade for anything otherwise cut htem. Its time to rebuild with younger kids.Look farther than the end of your nose and think a couple of years down the road.I would rather take the hit this year knowing the team would be would be moving forward .E nough band-aid fixes.

The JG signing will send shock waves through the league. You got a guy with limited experience and a couple of wins now the highest paid player in the entire NFL. That kind of contract will upset the apple cart and salary structure not only for QB but for other players as well.

What to do if you are the Cards GM?? Let's hear your proposals without any negative bashing of other's suggestions.

Let's assume that a young vet Cousins is going to demand at least the same contract as JG.

Given our cap and player base and our #15 pick, I would:

Pass on Cousins.
1) Sign Sam Bradford
2) Sign Gabbert

Let the two fight it out in preseason to see which is the starter and which one is the backup.

3) Stay with the BPA at #15. Hopefully it is a QB that the Cards have highly rated and falls to them. You have two 'bridge' QBs and a FQB.

4) Restructure HB's contract. Look for HB going into year two with his recovery from his last knee to bounce back. Our new coaching staff witnessed Thomas Davis LB do the same.

5) Focus on building a strong OL with FA and lower round draft picks.

6) Get a complimentary RB to DJ in the draft.

6) Sign a key vet to plug into the D. We need a strong ILB. Have hopes for TW and Branch in our D backfield. Bethea was a good resign.

7) Sign a vet WR.

To compete, need a dominating D and a strong running game. If Bradford could just stay healthy---check out his numbers with the Vikes behind their then bad OL.

I would agree with this. Sam is the best FA QB out there. Only thing I would change is drafting a rb. We still have Logan so we need to see what we have in him.

There's no way I'd give up those picks for Darnold, much less Mayfield. Take Jackson or Rudolph at 15 and keep the picks.

That's really not that much to give up to grab a potential franchise QB. Especially since Keim isn't exactly killing it in the draft...what does a few picks matter to grab a QB that we desperately need. Darnold's ceiling is sky high...would be dumb not to grab him if he slipped to the 5th or 6th pick.

Sign Gabbert
Due diligence on Bradford, bridgewater and foles,
Draft best available QB every year until solved -
Our remaining core is in good enough shape with a couple oline picks that take time to develop -
Kick Wilkes in the balls if he throws more than 60% of the time

Chris,

Got any GM moves of your own to suggest?

None that I really like. Our lack of foresight has put us in an incredibly difficult decision. The defense is built to win now. We have hired a strong defensive coach and we have clearly signaled that this isn't a rebuild.

Trading up requires giving up future assets that we will likely need on offense.

Everything lynch pins on two things I can't control, Larry and HB. I will take the worst case and say HB won't restructure. I am saying Larry returns.

Thus we are left with just a poo poo platter of decisions. It would be easier if we could just bite the bullet for a year and shed ourselves of the bad contracts we have (looking at you Gresham), we have to do a halfway retool

Cuts:

Tyrann Mathieu
Mike Iaupati
AP
Dawson
Mauro

Resign:

Tramon Williams
Alex Boone
Aaron Brewer
Kerwynn Williams

Extend:

Jared Veldheer 2 years. Keep him at LT where he belongs

QBs

Nick Foles - 2nd and 3rd next year. Seems pricey but compared to the cost of moving up in the first round it is cheap.

If unable to get Foles then it is probably Bradford for better or worse. Then we have to bite the bullet and trade up but that will end up costing another first and likely a 2nd or third.

Outside of trading up to get a QB or trading for Foles, I just don't see a great option that doesn't give us some shot at winning now and in the future.

FAs

We have to rebuild the WR core so this is where some money is going. I like

Donte Montcrief
Paul Richardson

I would sign both of these guys, leave Williams as WR 4 and draft a guy in the 3rd or 4th round.

G

Andrew Norwell

Draft

If we moved up then we have no picks until likely round 3. Blah

If we didn't move up then I either draft Vita Vea or or Billy Price (especially if we don't get a guard in FA)

Next two draft picks must be a CB and a WR, depending on what the QB trades cost.

Yep!

You can’t be right if you’re afraid to be wrong!!!

The Cards have been conservative wayyyyy too long in trying to pursue a longtime franchise QB. It’s time!!!

I can't disagree with anything you said, but you also cant cut off your nose to spite your face. It cost more to cut Gresh than it does to keep him. HB may not be able to cover like he used to, but he can still play. If he was making 10 mil nobody would question his ability IMO. Nkemdiche is fine not a bad cap hit there.

When I posted this thread title, I was curious to see if there was any kind of consensus among the GM wannabe's in the Card fan base.

A quick glance over the GM moves indicates that there is pretty much zero agreement . . . on anything. At best, we get two-or-three good with a backup QB, etc.

Let the debates continue. As many who are going to be happy with SK, there will be many more who think he is a doofus.

Well, I have more faith that Cousins is going to be successful than I do any QB in this draft (I know some will be good, but I feel that plenty will greatly disappoint, and I don't want us to be the ones that nab the Wendell Bryant of the group), but I'm less screaming for him than I'm saying that we backed ourselves into a corner and now have to at least try that route.

I think without Cousins, we're doomed to 2-3 years of bad football, but we can stem the bleeding by holding on to our picks and being patient with a bridge quarterback and rookie drafted somewhere outside of the top 10.
