1. Make the following cuts immediately. Lindley, Butler, Ginn. Address kick and punt return spots in the draft or from our current roster. Any would be better than Ginn was. If Zastudil is healthy, keep him as punter. Draft a punter if he's not healthy. There is one coming out this year who is VERY good, and even a fairly high draft pick would not be wasted on this area. This position is too valuable to overlook. We can't give away field position like we did with our Punt and Return game this year.
2. Resolve Fitz issue-----(try to keep him as the face of the franchise). Work with him on usage issues by limiting his routes down the slot. Get him involved more in 3rd downs. See if he would be amenable to reduced salary in return. Possibly resolve some future arrangement for him to remain active with the franchise in a Front Office position after his playing days are over as an ambassador for Michael Bidwill with media relations. His face and name are known world wide, and he is valuable AND perfect for the part. Juron Brown could take the majority of the slot receiver role. Fitz, and Floyd could be possession receivers who can go up to get the ball, and John Brown could be the 3rd wide out to keep Fitz and Floyd fresh. Draft a WR fairly high in the draft if Fitz must leave due to contract negotiation failure.
3. Address the linebacker issues in free agency. Try to negotiate for Justin Durant of the Cowboys who will more than likely be available at a reasonable rate. He could play either ILB position in 3/4 fronts, and edge OLB on 4/3 fronts. Resolve the Daryl Washington issue during his surely to come added suspension for the domestic violence issue. His status MUST be clearly defined as either STAY or GO. Try to renegotiate Frostee Rucker, and make a decision on Minter. (His value to the team needs to be determined), then he is either used or or cut.
4. Beef up the interior line. Sign C/G, A.Q. Shipley of the Colts to replace Faniaka this year, and to compete with Sendlein for the starting Center Position when he becomes at the end of next year. He should be a highly valued interior swing man for us.
Get Cooper healthy and strong and start him at LG. If he hasn't strongly shown that he will win the starting job by draft time, draft another OG to compete with Larsen, and cut/trade Cooper after June 1st. Fish or cut bait with Cooper.
5. Draft a QB, (either Hundley from UCLA, or a lesser known one). Mariota and Winston should be taken earlier. Keep either this draft pick or Logan Thomas as our QBOF after TC. Cut the other. Keep Stanton as Palmer's backup.
6. Draft a big, strong, fast, feature running back to carry the load that Ellington couldn't. Give Ellington the 3rd down back, and passing back opportunities. Keep Taylor, and Williams as depth.
7. Sign TE, Virgil Green in free agency. Carry Niklas, Fells, and Green and cut all other TEs. Try to convert one to be an optional H-back as BA doesn't like the full back position. This will still give us a passing option out of the backfield on third down when Ellington is not used. Do not carry a full back.
8. Work out a reduced contract with Dockett. He has value as a rotation player on the DL, AND is extremely valuable as a team leader and locker room guy. He will see the necessity of reduced pay to match his increasing age.
9. Try to resign Cromartie if possible. If not, work Bethel into the CB mixture and draft or sign another CB in free agency. Get Mathieu and Buchanan back to their Safety positions, where they can utilize their play making skills.
10 Try to sign Dick LeBeau to the defensive staff in a position like Tom Moore has on the offense. Try to keep Bowles if possible as DC. The knowledge possessed by this staff would be over the top, and the in-game and half-time adjustments and teaching opportunities should be tops in the NFL. I think he likes what he sees with this staff, and would be more than ready to contribute as a teacher without all the rigor of having to design scheme etc.
