With all we saw last year, peeps needed to go. Last in nearly all defensive statistical standings...heads need to roll!!! Now lets get some players to execute the plan.

Deshea Townsend played under Dick Lebeau in Pittsburgh and has a good understanding of his defense.
Louie Cioffi was a defensive assistant from 1997 through 2000 while Ray Horton was the DB coach and Dick Lebeau was the Defensive Coordinator in Cincinnati. Sounds like Louie should have some experience with the system.
Both good hires in my opinion.

Matt Raich. I don't think he's done that bad a job with our LBs really...he just haven't been given anything to work with. If we make a commitment to adding real talent, that isn't 8 years past their prime, at the position I think we'll see marked improvement.
I was wondering what was going to happen with Henderson once I heard Horton was hired. Now we know.
I've been saying all year our secondary was pitiful. But all I kept hearing was it was the pass rush. Yet far too many times opposing QBs were able to take the snap and hit a wide open receiver before even the best pass rushers could get to them.

Haggans,Lenon,Hayes/Washington,Porter just didn't equal a healthy Hayes, Dansby, Okeafor and Berry.
19 tackles and two sacks vs Atlanta in the Wildcard round. 11 tackles, a sack and an interception vs Carolina. 11 more tackles vs the Eagles and 15 tackles and an interception in the SB.
But soon we'll have Acho,KShepard,Washington, and Scofield and be kicking some butt.

A little miss leading to say we fired or let go of Henderson. His contracted ended and only had a team option for this coming year. We just didn't pick up the option.
Interesting side note, the guys name is actually Sigismondo, but he just tells people to call him Louie.

That route on the right of the picture Mr. Toler, and Mr. Washington is a quick slant. You have to do something about it.

FWIW, Toler and Washington play on the other side of the field, and when the Cards are in their three-deep shell (which many people here hated last year and we'll see much more of next year) the slant coverage is on the OLB or the WILB (in this case Washington but when we had a nickel defense on the field it was usually Lenon).
The problem was that guys were backed up and didn't explode forward quickly enough to break up the quick hitch route, which is what killed us most of the season.

It was actually two things that made it so bad for us to cover, what you said, but I think the biggest issue was the LB did not drop back into his coverage nearly far enough or fast enough. Our LB either always got sucked in thus a step behind, or was to worried about the run that they hesitate to go back into their drop. They tried to cover both the run and the pass, and as my new favorite saying goes if you try and cover everything you will end up covering nothing.

Fair enough, although it's hard to say that you can cover that quick hitch with an LB. If you want to say that Porter didn't have the wheels to get into the passing lane and get his hands up in order to discourage that pass, I'm with you.
It just seemed like there was a lot more freelancing and players out of position this season than there was in 2009, and I think that's partly that the players weren't as physically talented (so they were a step or two late), and also because they didn't trust the guy behind them to clean up the play (which is why Campbell looked bad so frequently--especially early in the season).

I think it goes a step further. The D was trying so hard to make up for the lack of offense that they shot themselves in the foot most of the time. If we get a respectable QB and the offense can at least move the ball the Cards D'fence should settle down.
