They could have done Boldin a week ago if they wanted to. Contracts can get cretive enough to extend a guy without adding any new cap space to this years cap. It wasnt a matter of if they could do it or not it is a matter of when they want to do it.

Dockett isn't getting squat. Dansby won't sign until after the season unless we want to lose the tag for the number of years he signs for. Wilson and Boldin will be the players that they negotiate with first and foremost

Warner, Wilson, then Boldin.

Which has been Boldin's point all along.

Then his point is lame since they told him flat out after him and his agent said they will wait until after Fitz gets his deal that the timeline will change. Boldin is the one who excepted this new timeline when he and his agent told them to wait.

I agree they want to extend Warner but they might have to wait on that one. He wants to be paid like a starter, the Cards want him to have an incentive-laden deal since this is the last year they want him to be the starter.

Its going to be tough to structure a contract to please both sides

#1 - I included every single bonus that I could think of, Including rosters bonuses that have yet to be earned and a few others that I was not sure if they reached their escalator yet or not(havent been able to get a straight answer on what they had to do to get their escalator so I just included them anyways).

#3 - For those wondering about when players contracts end check out this thanks to Darren Urban.

	DEAD CAP SPACE $2,800,000

Cap space left ($116,000,000 max) $11,749,116

What I would now like to know is how do we compare with other teams with Cap space left? If most other teams have about this much then fine but if most other teams (especially good ones) have 3-4 million left we are at an obvious disadvantage. Are we going to use some of this to sign any of our players that are p----ed off or is it going into the owners bank account? Seems to me we should not be leaving that much on the table when there have been good players to be had or good ones to extend or present a new contract. I am a long way from a cap guru but I can understand the simple fact of using the money you are allocate to improve your team. I assume the new stadium is putting more money in the owners pockets but maybe they need it to pay off their mortgage.

There are about 20 more teams in the league with more cap space then us. Plus you have to remember that before the cuts we were only at about just under 3 Mill. We are only at about 6 mill. now because of the cuts that just happened. So until yesterday there was not that much left on the table like you were wondering about.

Man I didnt know James was making that much.

Which is why it would be nice to develop Hightower this season to take over as the starter next season. Give us an excuse to cut Edge next season and give us some cap cushion.

We might not have to and here is why, we may not need the cap space next year..

We will have 20 out of the 53 man roster not under contract for the 2009 offseason. 6 of them are RFA's or EFA's whom are fairly cheap. That leaves only 14 more not under contract. 8 more would be cheap to re-sign or cheap to replace(guys such as Raplh Brown, St. Piere, Terrele Smith and a few more). That leaves 6 more not under contract. @ more guys we may have already replaced in A. Smith and Eric Green with our current crop of draft picks. That leaves only 4 guys that need to be re-signed Warner, Haggans, Berry, Dansby. And of that four only 2 are important and the other two Berry and Hagans may also be cheap or easily replaced since they are old.

We might be pretty well set next year. Of course I havent even started to look at the 2009 base salaries, bonuses, incentives, or escalators yet so I could be way off.

If Q gets guaranteed money and that seems to be a must for him. Wont that go on this year?
Nice job people good thread.

Yes and no. Depends on what type of gauranteed money we give him. If he got a signing bonus this year it would count towards this season. Or he could get a roster bonus in 2009, or a option bonus in 2009. All 3 options are technically called gauranteed money its just that the last to options arent paid to him until 2009. So we could give him an extension with even zero cap dollars if we used nothing but bonuses that dont take effect until 2009 if we wanted to. Or we could do a combo of things now to work under the cap, small enough signing bonus this season to work with the cap combined with a roster bonus or option bonus in 2009 to get him up to the toal gauranteed money that he wants since we dont have the cap space to do it all in a single signing bonus.

Depends on how it is structured. They could do all signing bonus, which would spread it out over the life of the contract in equal amounts. IE, 15 million over 5 years would be 3 mil a year, in addition to whatever the yearly salary is. Or, they could do roster bonus, which would go on this year, or a series of roster bonuses for later years in which they apply the year of the bonus. Or, they could do a combination of both. 10 mil signing bonus (spread out equally over life of the contract) with a roster bonus of 5 mil which would apply this year.
