Funny. People are not very excited about the pick because it isn't what they expected. I guess finally having an offensive line made fans look forward to NOT having to draft an O-lineman. But next to QB, OT, especially LT, might be the most difficult position in all the NFL to fill. If, arguably, the best one in the draft falls to you at 24, you have to take him.

I am not sure that this is about being disappointed with Massie. Its about the value. If he can beat out Massie, great. But we also know that injuries happen. True depth at O-line is a really good thing. Having the future figured out is better.

Now, we need a RB, edge rusher, and QB.

The good;

1. He's a Tackle, not a G/C worthy of 1st round

The Bad;

1. Could have had Ali Marpet 2/3 round

2. Still do not have a 1st round worthy DT DE/OLB

The Ugly;

1. Non glamour pick

There will be better prospects than Marpet in Rd. 2. Speculative if he lasts to the 3rd.

2nd Rd. will tell the tale on DE/OLB. NT should still be addressed, but you don't need to burn a high pick on one.

We're about W's - no ugly there.

Yeah, I know its a sign that we are not the Old Cardinals when we can actually make a FIRST ROUND pick with an eye on the future as much as the upcoming season. It's not like Levi Brown when we all knew that 1) We had to draft an OT and 2) they would have to start from day 1.

Progress, but I'm still not pumped over the pick.
This right here says it all. We have been so conditioned to fill gaping holes for the upcoming season that we dont know how to react when we dont have to do that.

I still like the pick as upgrading the OL is NEVER a bad thing. I like Massie but he isnt great....good but why settle for good?

Agreed, though I would consider Massie to be closer to mediocre and why settle for mediocre.

When asked what player was the toughest he faced at Mizzou, Shane Ray said LT D.J. Humphries.

I get the negative initial reaction to the pick because I, like many of you, did not anticipate the tackle position as one of the top needs...thus, I really didn't do as much homework on the top tackles.

However, when you think about it---BA has never seemed comfortable with Bobby Massie---plus, no other tackle on the roster could play LT if needed---and that's a major positive.

Just yesterday, I saw the interview where Shane Ray talked about Humphries, so i went and took a longer look.

I tell you what---I see what BA&SK see in Humphries---

* he was top rated tackle coming out of high school
* has proto-typical size---everything you look for---long arms----6-5/307
* better yet, he's very light on his feet---very mobile, which in this day and age tackles need to be in blocking speed rushers

Also---I have read reports that the Carolina Panthers were hoping Humphries---who is from Charlotte---would be there for them one pick after the Cardinals at #25. Instead they draft a small LB in Shaq Thompson, which is weird because the Panthers are loaded at LB, as we saw in the playoffs.

And I think the Cardinals got the last laugh on the Lions who traded out---because I think they thought they could take Humphries later---instead they drafted a G Laken Tomlinson even though they had just acquired G Manny Ramirez in the Denver trade up.

Humphries is young---but he is a rare talent---I just hope we don't hear the familiar "he's having trouble picking up the offense" refrain we've been hearing the past two years. Keim said he was drafting smart players---so we will see.

Anyway, here's a good look for you---Shane Ray versus D.J. Humphries:

What I was very impressed with is how Humphries is so quick and agile that he doesn't tip off pass plays at all. Most of the plays Humphries dominates Ray, but Ray gets the edge on him twice, and the Florida QB doesn't step up into the pocket in time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRrM08N038c

Is this satire or could you really not find any game film on him that was better than when he was destroyed for 3 sacks by the player taken 1 spot in front of us?

I agree. I liked Keim's talk after the pick. He said something like, he was the 13th best (11th?) player on their board. We did a lot of mock drafts, and we didn't foresee him falling to us. We are thrilled.

I guess my issue with that is that I believe we do still have glaring holes. We don't have a DT, we don't have a rush OLB and we don't have a viable ILB next to Weatherspoon (who's coming off a really bad injury) unless we're relying on Washington, who's coming off a year long suspension and facing another.

but it appears as if good is what we just settled for. I'd get it if we drafted a GREAT OT, but Humphries was the 5th OT tackle, who's best years were in high school and has been injury prone.

That's meaningless in the long run. In 2010 Veldeer was the 8th Tackle taken.

Yeah but that is the exception not the rule. More often than not, drafting the 8th guy in any positions nets you that kind of results on the field.

I would have felt much better about the pick had it been the top 2 guys. This pick feels more like a stretch. I hope it works out. He looks like a "potential" guy to me but if it works out and we get more protection? That can't be bad.

I slotted D.J. Humphries to the Browns' 19th-overall pick in my mock draft, so this is a slight bargain. I thought Arizona would take Eric Kendricks or a tall cornerback like Byron Jones, but Humphries makes sense as well. Right tackle Bobby Massie was the one responsible for Carson Palmer's injury against the Rams, so Humphries should provide an upgrade at right tackle. The Cardinals need to do everything in their power to make sure Palmer is protected. They can't have Bruce Arians debating between Ryan Lindley and Logan Thomas in a playoff matchup again.

This is such a profoundly stupid take. Palmer was injured when a guy reached out a nudged his shoulder, and if you're replacing a player based on one play... well, that's just stupid.

Palmer played 16 games when Levi Brown and Bradley Sowell were the starting left tackles. Using a first round pick for a guy you hope will take over at a tertiary position like RT is a pretty significant misuse of resources. We used a 2nd on Campbell who played a more important position.

Remember the last prospect who suffered from injuries after a promising early season, but checked out medically and was a great kid?

Ryan Williams. Oof.

Joining Humphries and Ryan Williams as underclassmen who totally would've been Top 15 picks had they waited an additional year is Troy Niklas. Don't think he would've been a first-round pick in this class based on his play in 2014.

And Jermon Bushrod was the 11th tackle taken in 2007 (Levi Brown was the 2nd tackle taken that year).

K9, Palmer was sacked 41 times when Brown and Sowell where on the line. 41! Surprisingly, he got back up every time. With just a few tweaks to the OL, that number went down to 28 the next year. That's the lowest its been since 2009. Updating or even adding depth to the OL is a good thing. I agree, I think it was a weird pick for a 1st rounder, but its not a bad one.

I don't understand all of the complaining on this board. We picked at #24. Didn't Keim (or someone) say that he was #13 on their board? If so, sounds like a very good pick/value.

Maybe I don't understand how this all works, but, I would think that they have their board lined up with their picks and the order of those picks. Very simple. As the players are picked by other teams, you check them off. If he is at the top of the board when it's your turn to pick, you take him. This should all be known before hand.

And that's fine. But it's not fair to basically imply that Palmer is Jake Locker or RG3 whom you need to protect at all costs because they're so fragile and slight. He's 6'5", 230 lbs.

It's a weird use of resources, but I've been saying for two weeks that Keim and his staff look at the top of the draft differently than we do as fans. It's not Christmas day for them like it is for us.

I think the prospect highlights Keim's tendencies as an evaluator. This is probably the last draft where he gets free rein on those tendencies which have brought us Jonathan Cooper, Troy Niklas, Earl Watford and Ryan Williams. At some point, these high picks are going to have to start producing at some level.

This is Massie's last year of his contract... I think it's fair to say that BASK are not at all sold on Bobby. The pick makes sense and I'm good with it! ;)

I totally agree with you on Palmer. He is a tank compared to the others. I to wish there was a little more excitement out of the first pick and hope DJ pans out, but they better pick up some awesome players in the next rounds as it will trump the boringness that came last night.

Spending first-round picks to replace former 4th round picks you've developed is a dumb use of resources.

tampa bay drafted winston to replace former 3 round pick they have developed

if u want improve the team u must replace some players with better players
and it doesnt matter where u got picked
they spend a lot of money on valdeher and iupati they cant spend too much to resign bobbt massie next year

Huh?? BASK clearly feels Humphries was worthy of his draft position - regardless of what you and other message board experts might think.
BASK also is not sold on their current right tackle, who happens to be in his last year of his contract.
Why wouldn't you attempt to ensure Massie's replacement is of the highest quality possible?

I see it as a smart move. This gives the Cards 3 first rounders on the o-line should Humphries beat out Massie. In BASK I trust... ;)

I posted something on facebook joking about waiting 2:45 for an o-lineman to be picked and had totally forgotten that my friend's brother is the Director of On-Campus Recruiting at Florida.

His response (my friend's, not his brother) to my post was: "Not a flashy pick, but a solid one. He's going to be real good."

His brother has been at Florida since Weiss was there, and when Weiss left he stayed. He likely knows DJ very well, so if I can get any more insight on him I will post it here.

Why wouldn't you attempt to ensure everyone's replacement is of the highest quality possible? We didn't do anything to prepare for the departure of Dan Williams. :shrug:

This logic makes no sense. Why not draft a replacement for Rashad Johnson in the first round? Jonathan Cooper?

You want to ensure that a player's potential replacement is of the highest quality as is reasonable. Right tackle is your fourth- or fifth-most important OL position. Drafting a first-rounder to sub out that player feels a lot like a budget play (maybe get 85% - 110% of the production at 40% of the cost) than an improving your team play.

I feel like the discussion of wanting to build the team through the draft is increasingly hot air. Part of building a team through the draft is re-signing your players--including your middle-roster veterans like Massie.
