Another factor (I apologize if someone mentioned it already) is that buying Monroe out is simply a nice thing to do for Monroe. He's been a textbook example of a professional so far, and buying him out allows him to sign where he wants to sign the rest of the year.

He might have offered to take more of a discount if the Suns buy him out now. He might have worked out a deal with Boston for their $8 mil exception, which also helps the Suns significantly. The Suns might have had another deal working where they need the roster spot more than the expiring contract. And they might have wanted to be nice. Could be all or none. We will see how it works out.

I don't think its just because McD is an idiot.

I have to admit I'm puzzled that the Suns apparently had zero long-term interest in Monroe. He's only 27 and they have no one else on the roster who can provide what he does inside. Why the organization would thumb its nose at a big man who is a talented interior scorer is beyond me.

If I had to guess, I'd say that they believe they need a rim protector. I am a huge Monroe fan, but he is not really a defender or a rim protector. It's also tricky right now because they don't know what they will get in the draft. If they end up with a big man, Monroe is obsolete unless he wants to play with the second unit. I tend to disagree with that philosophy. He can score, he can pass, he can rebound. Even if the Suns end up with one of the bigs in the draft, there is still room for Monroe.

Maybe the Suns think they will be able to retain Len for a lower rate than having to retain Monroe?

Lack of interest is not the problem with Monroe. It's the salary the Suns would have to accept in return.

Apparently the Cavs are willing to trade the Brooklyn pick now, so long as it's for someone that helps them long term. If they made that available in December they could have gotten a decent return but at this point it looks like it will be in the 6-10 range, which is good but not nearly as high or as valuable as it was earlier in the season. I think the best they can hope for with that pick is DeAndre Jordan. Even sending the Clippers the Brooklyn pick they'd have to include Tristan Thompson and his awful contract to make the trade work financially.

I know Jordan can opt out of his deal this summer but I don't think he will, he's due $24 million if he doesn't opt out and I doubt there will be many teams looking to spend that much money on him. Not many teams will have that much cap space anyways and Jordan will be turning 30 this summer, I don't think many teams will be interested in offering him a new contract starting around $20 million a year. The only way he gets paid more than that is if he helped Cleveland beat Golden State in the finals and they reward him with a long term deal but that's unlikely.

The Cav's are supposedly interested in Marc Gasol also but I think the Grizzlies are less likely to take on a contract like Tristan Thompson so getting a deal to work with Cleveland would be hard. Considering Memphis management already fired Fizdale for Gasol, I don't see them letting him go that easily in a trade either.

Well. He is going to be a free agent. Maybe Monroe told them he has no long-term interest in the Suns? Not an unlikely scenario.

Is Aaron Gordon a potential star player, or his he one of those "almost a star" teases that you end up paying like his is a star and regretting it.

I question why a bad team would be dangling a young, super athletic guy who has big star potential.

I like Gordona lot but he would mess up the Suns draft. However, sometimes one has to look at it as a bird in hand.

The Magic are probably only gauging interest. I'm presuming the Suns would keep his rights as a RFA in a trade.

I wonder what the asking price for Gordon would be, they probably want to try to attach either Fournier or Biyombo's contracts to him in a deal. Both are making $17 million a year, Fournier is on the books for 3 more seasons while Biyombo is only locked in for 2 more years. From what I can tell neither contract has raises, they're due $17 million a year each year. Without Monroe's contract on the books for the Suns it'd actually be a little difficult to work a deal with them if they did want to send one of those contracts out with Gordon. Since he's a restricted free agent this summer who will probably get close to max money, I don't think it'd be worth it to take on that extra salary and then have to pay him around $20 million a year also.

Also I really want the Nets pick from Cleveland.

I wonder if they would take Len or Chandler and some first round picks. They might want to keep Len in a rebuild.

I'd even include Bender or Chriss in the trade if they wanted to go this direction..

I think Evan Fournier might be another reason to do the trade. He is a nice young player but you are right, his contract might be a problem

Wow. The Suns could finish their rebuild dealing with the Magic.

Too many appetizers this morning.

I'm tempted to agree. Gordon is their best asset and it would make no sense at all for them to give him up.

Sometimes, people take their interpretation of speculation and present it as news, but I couldn't check in this case. The source is an article from The Athletic, which is subscription-based.

This Magic front office didn't draft him; maybe they see him as a bad fit with Isaac?

If he is available, I would offer Warren, Chriss, and the Miami pick.

Saw an interesting take on why Orlando would be open to trading Gordon...

"Orlando needs to acquire draft picks so they can get a great young player like Aaron Gordon."

It's not a productive or effective outlook for an NBA team but it's not all that surprising that a front office would think like that.
