Some guy on a USC board I read has a pic in his sig now from the movie of the Spartan army. UCLA fans keep pointing out to him that those are SPARTANS, not TROJANS and that in fact historically there's a dispute if
Trojans even really existed.

He must have got sick of it he finally said "I know they're Spartans, I just liked the movie, give me a break."
He should put a picture of a used condom up with the quote

"protecting you since man has been knocking boots"

This week my wife said, " Is that a gladiator-type movie? I thought it was a horror movie. I want to see it now."

She rocks.

My wife and I have been together about 3 1/2 years, and we've been to exactly two movies together--Team America: World Police, and Jackass, Number Two. 300 will the third, tonight.

I wouldn't advise watching the unrated DVD version, complete w/ the un-edited sex scene---those puppets would make R. Kelly blush.

Parts of it actually were historically accurate. Leonidas did take 300 of his personal bodyguard out for what he called a walk to duck the edict forbidding the army to march. The line of 'fighting in the shade' is supposed to be accurate. The numbers are relateively accurate, although it was 300 against about a million, and not millions plural.

I bet it was more like 100,000...it's a Greek story so probably exaggerated but still amazing. I can't wait to see some people get slaughtered.

Actually, reports vary. Some experts believe it was in the hundreds of thousands, anywhere from 100,000 to 900,000+, and others put it over 1 million.

The numbers are relatively accurate, although it was 300 against about a million, and not millions plural.

There were also about 1,000 Thesbians who stayed and fought with Leonidas. They are mostly forgotten because the legend of the 300 is a much better story.

Even so, 1,300 against hundreds-of-thousands is still an amazing story.

I’ve been watching bits and pieces of a 2-hour History Channel show about this battle. It’s pretty interesting if you’re curious about the recorded history version of the story. A lot of the background (training of the Spartan children, etc.) agrees with the movie. Quite a tough life they lived.

Yes, you are correct. I believe there were either a few hundred soldiers from another Greek city as well, or the total of the non-Spartan force was 1,000. It escapes my memory right now.

They were betrayed by the goat trail as well.

Saw that history channel special too...very good.

Lowest good estimates are 300,000 minimum, and most likely 900K.

The stuff about the naval battle that went on during this was great stuff...

The movie doesn't show Xerxes had Leonidas beheaded, and quartered and only 40 years later did he return his reunited body to Sparta.

A simple yes or no will do, unless you feel like comparing the movies for me.. :D

It is like Braveheart if you are only watching the battle scenes.

Cool, thats what I wanted to know.. So I'll watch it.. And no, I dont only watch battle scenes.. I just prefer movies with huge battle scenes with good stories as opposed movies that portray themselves with huge battle scenes only to get some crappy long drawn out story.. Guess what Im saying is this.. If the commercial looks like it has huge battle scenes and thats what I expect to see, thats what I wanna see.. Those are my favorite movies.. I dont wanna go in thinking its one thing and get something else..

Typically you would be correct with most Greek stories you'd follow the rule of 10 (multiply the number of Greek soldiers by 10 and divide the number of the enemy forces by 10 to get an accurate figure) because story tellers did have a tendency to exaggerate. However this is one of the few times that they didn't exaggerate that much.

The reason the Persian forces were given the name "Immortals" were due to their numbers. There were so many that it seemed as though they were coming back from the dead.

Fun movie not exactly historically accurate but still damn good fun.

You make it sound as if the entire Persian army were Immortals, and that is far from the case. The Immortals were the elite Persian soldiers, officially either bodyguards or imperial house troops. I think there were 10,000 of them, if I'm not mistaken.
