2021 - Prove It
It is about roster spots, we just don't have many open ones. So why spend money on fringe talent?
QB (3)
*Only way we add one is in the draft.
RB (4)
*We have one open spot, unless the Cards want to replace Stepfan Taylor.
TE (3)
*One open spot to replace Greshem, but the Cards might like Momah or Christian enough to not add one.
WR (5)
*Maybe we could replace Jaron or add a 6th spot, but I'm not sure it will happen.
OL (9)
*We carried 10 last year, but I doubt we do this year. This owuld leave 3 open spots to replace Massie, Larsen, and Sendlein.
DL (8)
*Arians likes a rotation, and therefore, probably no open spots. Xavier Williams will probably get a look at the NT spot. They may draft a guy, but I imagine it would be early as they would want someone who could earn a spot.
OLB (5)
*Probably two open spots since they will need to replace Freeney and Woodley. Freeney obviously could be re-signed.
ILB (4)
*With Bucannon officially moved, they probaly want to add one, and then let Fua and Demens compete for the other.
CB (4)
*I am taking the one extra OL spot and moving it here. I'm guessing they want to have more than three active CBs. I will say two open spots.
S (5)
*Allocate one spot to replace Rashad rigth now, which would turn to two if Jefferson is signed. Clemons is a fringe player though.
ST (3)
*Need a long snapper.
So, this breaks down to 12 open spots to replace players we could lose.
1 RB
1 TE
3 OL
2 OLB
1 ILB
2 CB
1 S
1 LS
After that, you can argue that Clemons could easily be replaced along with Kareem Martin, Xavier Williams, and Stepfan Taylor. So, that leads to roughly 16 open spots for fringe players, free agents and draft picks to fight over. The Cards could also go with 8 linemen instead of my projected 9.
So, tops 17, open spots. At least 1 TE, 2 OL, 1 RB, 2 OLB, 1 ILB, 1 CB, 1 LS. 8 potentially open spots depending on position distribution. That being said, I imagine at least a few of the Momah, Christian, X Williams, S Riddick, A Fua, Demens, Martin, Wagenmann, Brooks, White and Eskridge find spots.
So, to be honest, the Cardinals don't have a ton of spots that they have to fill. Now, they will sign some players, but for those who are in panic mode, it's going to be all right. We have a deep roster, but the facts are that FA and the draft just isn't offering solutions for our biggest issue this year.
