Golfing buddy of mine is a DIE HARD 49ers fan. A guy who can tell you who they drafted in the 5th round in 1997 off the top of his head and travels from Austin to SF for games type fan.
You golf with a Niners fan :mulli:.

I think Snyder will be an upgrade over Hadnot. The scary thing will be if the starting right side of the OL is Hadnot and Snyder .

No. In the 70's, the Cards had one of the best offensive lines to ever play in the NFL. The offensive line they had in 98 when we beat Dallas in the playoff game was also pretty good.

+1

Where for art thou Dan Deirdorf ?

Imagine him and DeCastro as your OG's ?

Unreal.

LOL Terrible Tackle #1,832. But as we discussed there just aren't many people on the planet who can play Tackle in the NFL.

Not only that, but I think that college spread offenses really reduce the necessity for a top tackle.

A decade ago you could've named five or six elite tackles in the NFL, almost off the top of your head. Now? After Thomas and Long, you really have to lower the bar to include another guy.

Maybe it's a generational thing--there are a lot of young/unproven OTs in the NFL right now--but it seems like they just don't make 'em like they used to.

This all makes sense but:

I still want to know how New Orleans was able to put together their offensive line that developed two all-pros and helped Brees set records for offensive production with a 4th round,4th,5th,7th,UDFA,UDRookie, a 5th and one 2nd round selection.

I would also like to know if teams never let star linemen go how did Tampa Bay just get Carl Nicks?

I'm with Rugby on this offensive line stuff. It seems there are 160 NFL starters on the offensive line and only like 9 of them aren't garbage and every week there's a new worst tackle in the NFL for 2010 or 2011 or whenever. Trying to figure it out is giving me a headache and I can't have any medicine, ,because I'm trying to lose some weight. :(

I'm not sure why Evans dropped in the draft, but Nicks had off-field issues. The OTs for New Orleans benefit from Brees' quick release and solid inside help from their very good OGs.

As far as Nicks leaving NO, he wanted to be the top OG in football and they just paid Jahri Evans 1 or 2 years ago to a huge deal. So Nicks got 9.5 mil from Tampa, and then signed another very good OG in Ben Grubbs to a deal worth 7.6 mil.

NO gets it.

I like the signing. At a minimum we have a player, experienced in the division, who can upgrade the R-guard position. If the team signs Scott or drafts DeCastro, he can step over and battle Bridges for the r-tackle position.

Better options to the right then last season.

I am curious to see the contract that he was signed to. He could be a solid swing linemen, but I haven't seen anything in his play to view him as a starting caliber player.

How about 13 starts at r-guard for a 13-3 team last season?

Or that tackles are tested more on a per game basis than ever before and even the Lomas Browns of the previous era (good, not great left tackles) would look bad today.

Can we zero in on the specifics of playing either LG or RG - and what we've lacked there in recent years?

One 800 lb gorilla that comes to mind is "confusion as to blocking assignments handling blitzes and stunts." (Too many times, some dude would come blowing in unmolested to cream Kolb or Skelton because no one picked him up).

My perception of Snyder is that, whatever his perceived shortcomings, he seems to be a pretty smart guy. Will his presence anywhere on our OL help get this problem fixed?

I like the signing as a RG, but I'm skeptical at RT. We've certainly seen much worse Cards OL signings in the past, and it sounds as if we signed Snyder to a VERY reasonable contract.

Sign Bell and draft OL depth and we'll be on the right track.

BTW I knew his wife growing up, she was a grade behind me in middle school. Her older brother was a year ahead.

She choose to go to Mountain Pointe High School, while I went to Desert Vista.

correct, we have seen this one too many times and makes me think "what is Grimm teaching them?"

But isn't that just another way of saying that LTs not evolving at the same pace that the defenders across from them are?

I actually thought that Trent Williams and (especially) Russel Okung were playing well, but they've had careers plagued by injuries.

In the paper this morning, it mentioned that fact (that his wife was from this area) and Snyder stated it figured into his decision.

He said on the radio that it was a nice bonus, but it was primarily a football decision.

Darren Urban mentioned on his twitter feed that the contract is likely for five years not because we expect him to be here that long, but because we can pro-rate his signing bonus over that time.

Prediction: When the dollar figures come out on this, we're not going to like it.

To throw potential numbers at it, I'll go with: $5M bonus, $1M the first year, $3M next year, and $4 thereafter. Contract total $21M over 5 years. Therefore, $2M cap hit this year and $4M next.

Probably the veteran minimum the first year.

I find it funny that only on a Cardinal forum could Adam Snyder have such a long thread dedicated to him, since he is our only free agent signing so far lol

He didn't sign a five year deal on the second day of free agency to be a backup. He just started the entire season for a team that was 13-3! Why in the hell would he pounce on a backup gig?

What you write makes to much sense not to be believed. I just do not know that much about him but if he started the entire season on a 13-3 team then he is surely coming here as a starter.

Great, we signed the weak link on a decent line. Underwhelmed. I've watched enough recent 49er games to know a poor player when I see one. Swing player with a low contract, fine. Anything more and we crapped the bed.
