We'll see who's starting in his spot next year. I'm not going to say "replacing," because no one can replace Adrian Wilson.

People should keep in mind that there isn't a football reason to replace Adrian Wilson right now, there's only a financial motivation. There is currently no one on the roster to step into Adrian Wilson's starting job.

+1.

100% rebuild mode.

Wilson can still play, and can still "make plays".

New guard, new regime.

I think it is an unneeded move unless there is going to be more signings, and roster moves then what has been said or assumed. If not ? Then this makes no sense to me.

But, I am not the guy in charge.

When you release guys like Wilson and Boldin you gotta have some sort of plan, the failed one that followed Boldin was the toughest pill to swallow for me as a fan.

I hope there is a positive gain in letting Wilson go. Cause Rashad Johnson is no Adrian Wilson, even a 34 year old Wilson.

One of the greatest third round picks the Cardinals have ever made---thanks to Steve Keim who was a scout at the time.

I will never forget AW's tears of joy when the confetti was falling from the rafters of U of P after winning the NFC Championship. I've never felt closer to a Cardinal in all my life at that moment.

I was hoping they could retain AW as a situational rusher---he's still very good at that. But they couldn't at his present salary.

Hope he goes to a team that wins the Lombardi.

Just wished so much it would have been as a Cardinal.

Thanks, AW, we will never ever forget you? #24 forever:newcards:

Yes. It is more about the 3mil than it is about him taking up a roster spot for an improving young player. He isn't the guy he was, but he can still play in the NFL.

Last year, for the first time in his career, Wilson saw time on the bench as he split time with some of the younger up and coming guys on the team. That right there is a football reason.

Any chance of Adrian Wilson scoping the field, not liking the options and then returning to the Cardinals for a lesser salary?

The Cardinals are clearly moving in another direction. Wilson is done playing for the Cardinals IMO.

So this is all Ray Horton's fault. ;)

"In every franchise, there is a select group of players whose contributions earn them iconic status and for us, Adrian Wilson will always be one of those players. He joined us at a key time in our organization's evolution and helped lead us into a new era. We will always be grateful for that and look forward to the day when he's placed in the Ring of Honor at University of Phoenix Stadium alongside the other all-time great Cardinals." -Michael Bidwill

Thanks for the 12 years A-Dub, I wish the team would have shown you the same loyalty you showed us. Go get a ring.

Man this sucks. Part of me knows that his ability is dimished, more so than I probably care to admit, but this still is a sad day. Adrian Wilson is one of, if not the, greatest Cardinals ever. He will be missed.

This. I'm bummed, but understand. I can only hope that the organization handled a tough chore with class.

Sound like they have.

Pretty much stated that his spot on the Ring of Honor is being cleaned and polished for when he is ready to call it a career, and come back home.

He IS a Cardinal for life. No doubt this is his home.

Fair enough. Here are ADub's defensive usage stats for the final 6 weeks of the season:

12: 54%
13: 83%
14: 61%
15: 40%
16: 82%
17: 81%

And it's worth mentioning again that neither of the players who subbed in for Wilson in those periods are currently on the roster. So what's the football reason again?

my favorite Cardinal moment of all time is was on the field after the NFC Title Game when AW was being interviewed on the field with confetti filling the frame behind him, and a single tear roll down his cheek.

Mine too.

That's what I think of when think of him.

I understand it had to happen; doesn't make it hurt any less.

Another point:

I think as much as anything else, it was how clearly stronger the defense was when Kerry Rhodes was moved up to SS in place of Wilson.

The move now is the re-signing of Rashad Johnson to start at FS so that Rhodes can move to SS full-time this year.

I imagine the Cardinals have a deal in place for Johnson...yet out of respect for Wilson, they will delay the announcement of it until later in the weekend or Monday.

He is at the end of his career. As painful as it is it's time to move forward.

Yes there is a hole at safety now. However it just so happens that safety is the deepest postion in FA. I'm not concerned at all that the Cardinals won't be able to fill the position.

Adrian Wilson released today

This is a damn shame! :(

Business decision, money, moving forward, blah, blah, blah; I get all that stuff, and it's still too damn bad to see this happen!

Man...... This is a tough one to swallow.

Toilet Bowles better put a good product on the field next year. Because this guy embodies what this franchise aspires to be.

Although this is the nature of the NFL, I am left wondering if we exhausted all options with him. Would he still be here if Horton got the job?

This guy cried at his extension presser..... And cried on the field after the NFC Title game. I hope he goes and wins a championship somewhere.

Go join the Pats, Packers, Broncos, or Ravens buddy. You deserve it.

I am more for the wait and see approach since it has reported that the team is in heavy negotiations with both Johnson and Toler. For all we know this move was made to make the numbers work with the both of them. Graves is not around anymore, so multitasking is very possible.

Aloha AW!!! A captain, a beast, a monster, a career Cardinal. 6th player ever to join the 25/25 club. :) I remember when he scored a TD his rookie year, the man played hurt, played with his heart, and we saw that when he teared up last season. He has literally put his all into the redbirds, schoolled a lot of our youngins a long the way teaching them the right way to play in this League that can swallow up some young talent. Anybody who gets three picks against Dattass (in the same game!!) on ruite to a W...

THAT'S WHAT A W stands for... A Win!!!!

He was our 64th draft pick that year, and he never played like a late rounder. 25.5 sacks and I think he tried to rip someone's head off on damn near every one. A player that doesn't give up, or give in, I hope he finds a new place that respects his ethic, both work and soul style.

Cards gotta do what they gotta do, I hate to see him go but money is money and age is age in this sport. I hope someone utilizes his skillset for another couple/few years.

Love'n you AW.
