I think this is the right take on the situation based upon current information.

While it is impossible to replace Stoudemire's ability, does anyone besides me think that the Suns may soon be looking to add another 4/5 player to their roster.

Perhaps it could involve just adding another role player (such as if a Lonnie Jones becomes available) or using the trade exception to get a more established talent.

Again, no one can totally replace Stoudemire in the Suns lineup. It also reminds me how vulnerable the Suns are at backup PG if the Suns do not have adequate backup for Steve Nash on their roster.

well IMO the suns should add another 4/5, likely as depth more than with the intent of impact most of the talent are already on other rosters...others on this will have to step up in his absense however, long that is...this is still a playoff team without Amare. The MVP won't let it slip to far.

Marion made a comment last night saying he would be willing to move but not forever...you know I may get killed for saying this but Marion is kind of whinny lately for a player of his stature, he might need to take one of the positive thinking seminars.

Well this sucks.

Lets just get him healthy. Hopefully that won't take too long.

Like George said better now in preseason than at the end of the season.

Who knows maybe having the team find their way without Amare for a short time will help in the long run. Other players will have to learn to step up with Amare out.

It sure leaves us short handed on the front line with as many minutes as Amare was expected to play.

This sucks, but as couple of people said, better now than a few months from now. The rest of the guys will just have to step up.

It gets worse...

Update: Stoudemire, who had his left knee examined by a specialist Friday, could be facing surgery on the knee that has bothered him all summer, the Arizona Republic reports.

Recommendation: The Suns medical staff planned to meet late Friday night to determine the next step. "We're going through the evaluation process and we're going to make sure we have all the information before a determination is made to pursue treatment, possible surgery (and) what the safest and best return is for him to come back to basketball," Suns president and general manager Bryan Colangelo said.

It looks like it will just be arthoscopic surgery. I am not worried. The only thing that bothers me is that he won't be able to condition for a good amount of time.

On the bright side.

Without Amare, our starting lineup is most likely going to be?

Nash
Bell
JRJ
Marion
Thomas

That's still a pretty good lineup.

Diaw, Dijon, Tischer, and Burke will also get extended minutes in pre-season. The competitive nature often takes over, even in preseason games, and we might have been tempted to play our starters longer than we should.

The young guys are going to get a chance to show their stuff. I am looking forward to watching them.

For the heck of it, I went back and looked at the boxscores for the two games Amare missed last year. Shawn was the high scorer in both games vs Denver and Phildelphia, Nash had a triple double vs Philadelphia. For the short term, Shawn and Nash can carry the team, long term it would be detrimental as Nash's minutes would be sure to increase. What kind of shape would the team be in when Amare returns is to me the greatest worry. (I tried to c/p the boxscores, didn't work out).

I like how, inevitably, my name immediately follows the words "insulting and negative," even in a thread where I hadn't participated.

The only word associated with you was "terse" which isn't anything to be worried about really. I find your posts to be very well thought out and informative and rarely venomous. I'll drop it though.

Actually I was kind of making a joke, but thanks for the response. No offense accepted or intended.

This year, sports wise for my Arizona teams has been like a exercise in the "worst case scenario" for every team I love. ARGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

:help:
Now I am just waiting for Lute Olsen to go into a coma and Stephen Drew and Conor Jackson to bang knees in spring training and then I will be entirely drained of ever having optimism about anything again. Serioulsy, I dont' deserve this............

If one doctor says he should get surgery, I say he gets it done now and gets this thing cleared up. I don't want him rehabbing something which turns out to be a lot more serious, then has to get surgery in December.

I was thinking about "worst case scenerios" (short of losing the entire season). IMHO the Suns are still a borderline playoff team even if Amare did not play a regular season minute. They can still run and they can still shoot.

What matters is that Amare gets healthy and in condition in time for the playoffs. They have zero chance in the first round without him - especially with poor seeding, but would be a first round nightmare for any team if he's back and healthy. It is not uncommon for top teams to not be fully in "playoff form" in the first round.

I think they can still get a 6-8 without him as well.

However, the problem is the longer he is out the longer our old backups on the frontline have to play. We want those bodies fresh in the playoffs, if Amare misses a couple months it could really bite us down the road with them.

Watching the ASR and they said Amare will at least miss the entire preseason.

I have a really bad feeling about this. Mysterious knee pain is never a good thing.
