Whatever no one knows the whole story except for rice and his then girlfriend and now wife, she forgave him and who really knows the truth besides them. The tape and his actions look despicable, but she is the ultimate judge in the situation. No charges were pressed and he will move on with his life outside of football it is what it is...

She is the ultimate judge? Really nashman? A battered woman?

That's one of the most ignorant things I've seen posted about this, that's like saying your goat-humping neighbor committed no crime, because the goat failed to pick him out of a police line-up.

LOL. I do think that what she says and how she says it should be given some consideration but it doesn't come anywhere close to surpassing video evidence.

If they didn't see the tape, they should have seen it. See the logic Goodell used with the Saints.

which is precisely why in just about every case now prosecutors can go ahead with DV cases whether the victim chooses to press charges or not. It's so common that the victim doesn't it's essentially Stockholm Syndrome and it's been decided it's better to go ahead and prosecute if there's enough evidence rather than just wait for the guy to beat her or someone else up again.

So it's a one size fits all world? I don't see the logic, I see faulty reasoning.

Why DV victims don't prosecute/stay with abuser?
Some reasons:

1) They love the abuser
2) Everything is better in the morning
3) They are convinced that they can change the abuser
4) The abuser is a wonderful person when sober/not on drugs, etc
5) They have nowhere to go
6) They are afraid to leave

Am I allowed to post how this thread is showing how much certain people on here suck?

I am sorry, but come on now. Overlook what Paterno did for Sandusky? Who cares Goodell only suspended Rice 2 games for going Mike Tyson on his wife?

Major suckage.

7) Abuser is a millionaire, and prospects for replacement are slim.

Agreed and it's connected to the greatest failings in this incident as far as the league and Balitmore are concerned. I can see the difficulty the league had in taking action against him given the way his case was handled officially. But I can't see how Baltimore could have agreed to that joke of a press conference and I'm disappointed that the League didn't take action right then. Goodell, the NFL and Baltimore all have some explaining to do but the real investigation should center around New Jersey and Rice not Baltimore and the NFL.

Charges were pressed and he was allowed to avail himself of a diversionary program. At the end of this process the court will decide his ultimate charge under the law.

And a woman battered being the best judge of a situation is a baffling conclusion.

Goodell said "ignorance is never an excuse". He was the one who made it one-size-fits-all.

wonder if he'll suspend himself for a year if someone else falls on the sword for him and takes the wrap for getting the tape, but never showing it to him.

if not, not sure how he squares that hypocrisy.

It was a woman's voice on the phone recording the AP has, right? So why not just continue the trend of throwing women under the bus in the NFL?

Context. Surely you don't think he proclaimed himself aware of all things when he made that comment? He said the Head Coach couldn't claim ignorance as an excuse because of that specific situation, not because it's some universal truth. But consider that I'm only arguing against using the New Orleans "quote" as justification for taking Goodell down. It is quite possible that ignorance in this case is no excuse.

What would her motivation be for not giving it or showing it to someone else in the NFL offices? She's secretly a big Ravens fan and didn't want them to lose Rice? She has Rice on her keeper fantasy team and didn't want to lose him? It really makes no sense for this mystery female to keep it from anyone else in the NFL offices. Law enforcement knew that she had it and wouldn't be difficult at all to validate she had it considering the voice mail. Again, it makes no sense.

I get ya. It's kind of like the NBA.

When David Stern punished the players for coming off the bench, it was the "letter of the law". When he went easy on League officials for gambling violations, he cited the "spirit of the law".

totally agree. makes even less sense if she got it in April, before the suspension was even levied.

the scariest thing about all of this is that everyone saw the tape and just didn't much stock in Domestic Violence being something horrible enough to come down hard on. but even that makes no sense watching that tape. it's HORRIFYING video. spitting on her, knocking her out, then standing over her the way he did.

I think she may have withheld it for a couple of reasons.

I think she knew the NFL was such a boys club, that if she made waves, maybe they would make her quietly go away.

Maybe she suppressed it because the culture was clear about protecting star players.

Or maybe she secretly blamed the victim for some reason.

I think she did pass it along and it got suppressed. But then the culture at the NFL office must be strong enough to keep her from coming out and blowing a whistle.

Maybe she wasn't even in a position to make any of those decisions and was just the admin of the person who did receive it.

Yes, but then she would have forwarded it to her boss and he/she squashed it. If she saw it, even as an admin, I think she would have forwarded it and made it someone else's problem.

You see what you want to see. Sounds familiar.

Familiar and true. But I still say your quote/logic is irrelevant. It doesn't mean I don't think Goodell is responsible for the actions and words of his people.
