Wow. What a blur yesterday was. The Cardinals trade WR Anquan Boldin and then learn that LB Karlos Dansby and FS Antrel Rolle have signed lucrative FA contracts with the Dolphins and Giants respectively.

The question is, why are these high profile players so eager to leave Arizona?

I think I can sum it up in two words: Calvin Pace.

When the Cardinals players a couple of years ago saw what Calvin Pace got on the FA market, after only putting together one solid season in Arizona, it flabbergasted the players and it whetted their FA imaginations.

This occurred before the Cardinals became a highly visible playoff and Super Bowl contender.

There's quite an allure for players to be smash FA hits, especially first day hits and Dansby and Rolle and even Boldin (seeing as he signed a 4 year deal asap after the trade) cashed in big-time. Apparently, starting with Calvin Pace and follwed up last year by the lucrative FA signing of DE Antonio Smith, Cardinal players are a big hit on the market.

The frustrating thing for the Cardinals' FO is that the Ravens, Dolphins and Giants managed to do in mere hours what the Cardinals had been trying to do for three years. It also appears that the Cardinals last-ditch offers were similar to the deals Dansby and Rolle signed. But, re-signing with the old cub as a hot shot marquis UFA is not sexy...not in the least.

Before we move on, I think of the three players, Anquan Boldin will have the most impact and will be the most successful. For one, he has the sheer physical and mental toughness that the other two don't have, and for two he got matched with the perfect team. Those fans will revere and idolize him. Plus, his contract is fair.

However, both Dansby and Rolle are going to have to play with the weight of their exorbitant contracts squarely on their shoulders....and they are going to have to do so under the kind of intense media and fan scrutiny that they have never been subjected to in the cozy shadows of the University of Phoenix stadium. Bill Parcells expects 100% commitment and toughness and maximum production and so do the Giants.

What's curious is that Dansby doesn't really fit the mold of a Parcellsian LB and he isn't going to be able to play in a tuxedo the way he did in Arizona. And, Antrel Rolle only started to warm up to the FS position this year, and yet he is now the highest paid safety in the NFL.

When you look at it from these angles, the Cardinals are better off moving ahead without them.

So here are the positives for the Cardinals as they move ahead:

1. When you look at the rest of the NFC West, none of the other teams landed DE Julius Peppers. I thought Pete Carroll would have liked to make this signing his first major splash, especially in light of how needy the Seahawks are suddenly for pass rushers.

Now there's talk that the Seahawks will give up their #6 pick to sign RFA WR Brandon Marshall. While Marshall is one of the best WRs in the NFL when he's healthy and in the right frame of mind, there still are major questions as to who is going to get him the ball, and by giving up the #6 pick the Seahawks will not be in a position to draft Sam Bradford or Jimmy Clausen. I say this is very good news if it indeed happens. Plus, we have a CB in DRC who can outrun and outquick Marshall.

In SF, they are courting QB David Carr and FS Matt Ware. Fine by me on both counts.

In STL, they signed QB A.J. Feeley, who has played so little in his career it's hard to know whether he will be able to wrest the starting job away from whomever else is on the roster.

Thus, after day one, even though the Cardinals lost three of their better players, they suddenly have an enormous purse of money to move ahead with, and by adding an extra third and fourth round pick, now have excellent draft flexibility to be able to draft both the BPA when given the opportunity and draft for need when BPA and need are a match.

And as someone at ASFN (please remind me who you are, you deserve the credit for sure) pointed out, the added picks may enable the Cardinals to consider signing a couple of RFAs if that's what they wish to do.

2. What's reasonable to expect is that the Cardinals should be able to sign several lower level (sub $3.7M per year) UFAs to fill immediate needs with veteran experience. LB Larry Foote would be a solid addition and would allow the Cardinals to bring along a draft pick behind him until the player is ready to start. LB Akin Ayodele who was released by the Dolphins yesterday is an excellent pass defender in the 3-4, and a solid tackler. He would not command more than $3.7M on the market. The Dolphins also released FS Gibril Wilson, who has talent and may be perfect for Matt Ware's role.

The Patriots showed a few years back that adding solid role players in free agency to mix in with the established players on the roster is often a very effective plan.

3. It was also good news for the Cardinals that Karlos Dansby signed right away because it now gives them the opportunity to sign two players to contracts that average more than $5.5M per year.

This would enable the Cardinals to pick up a starting FS such as Darren Sharper or Ryan Clark and an edge pass rusher such as Aaron Kampman or Joey Porter.

4. As for the draft, I was playing with some of the names that i saw on several of the mock drafts and here are a few that stood out.

The first one is the 7 round mock at NFLDraftsite...and get this, they have predicted this year's compensatory picks and they have the Cardinals receiving a 5th and a 7th. I know this may contradict the speculation on the board, but it's interesting that by their calculations the Cardinals would have a 5th round pick after all. They also predict, interestingly enough, that Baltimore will be receiving a third and a fourth...which essentially means they may not be void of picks in those rounds either. BTW, these comp picks have been on there a while...well before yesterday's trade.

Thus in using the players who were available on their mock at the spots where the Cardinals pick, I took the players that I thought were the best available:

#26-Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee/Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise St.
#58-Sean Weatherspoon, LB, Missouri/Eric Norwood, LB, South Carolina
#88-Akwasi Owusu-Ansuh, CB,/Mike Johnson, G, Alabama
#89-Jordan Shipley, WR, Texas/Erik Decker, WR, Minnesota
#124-J.D. Walton, C, Baylor/Harry Coleman, S, SU
#125-Dennis Pitta, TE, Utah/Micah Johnson, LB Kentucky
#166-Brandon Lang, DE, Troy/Robert Johnson, S, Utah
#198-John Skelton, QB, Fordham/Mike Kafka, QB, Northwestern
#237-Donald Butler, LB, Washington/Mike McLaughlin, LB, Boston College
#250-Trindan Holliday, KR/WR, LSU/Robert Vaughn, S, Connecticut

What's cool is that in both the third (#88,#89) and fourth rounds (#124, #125 app.) the Cardinals have back to back picks. Our minds are going to be racing a mile a minute thinking of the possibilities and combinations along with Mel and Mikey Mayock.

Yeah....havin the 2 extra picks would be great.....but not by using this mock......12 picks by the Cards and only 1 defensive player?

Nice write up Mitch. It will be interesting to see the roster going into training camp. I think it will be much better than people on this board are expecting.

Nice job Mitch glad to see you off the QB kick with the 26th pick. I do not think Weatherspoon is there by the second round though.

Well, az jam, the money is piling up: and there's plenty of work to do to patch up the holes. Should be interesting.

Since you mentioned the QB situation, CT,

Here are the options:

1. Make a move to sign Jason Campbell (give up a first).

OR

2. Make a move to sign Tarvaris Jackson (only a 3rd due to a tendering glitch).

OR

3. Sign Daunte Culpepper (I'd say he's the best UFA option left, unless you like Charlie Batch).

OR

4. Explore a trade for Tyler Thigpen, especially now that Pennington has re-signed with the Dolphins.

OR

5. wait and see about Derek Anderson or Brady Quinn.

THEN

6. Draft:

Colt McCoy (2nd?)

Tony Pike (2nd?)

Tim Tebow (3rd?)

Jevan Snead (3rd?)

Dan LeFevour (3rd?)

Jarrett Brown (4th?)

John Skelton (4th?)

Jonathan Crompton (4th?)

Mike Kafka (6th?)

What is amazing to me is that even though the mainstream media never seems to give us any credit for being a good team our players sure are popular when they hit the open market.

Rolle, Dansby, Pace and Smith all got huge contracts when they left. Even Boldin got a big contact.

What's as perplexing, BHCF, is that a defense...which was finally getting some national player recognition this year with three NFC Pro Bowlers in Dockett, Wilson and DRC and an alternate in Rolle (that's 4 out of 11 starters on our defense, not even counting Dansby...and even Campbell for that matter, both of whom could be considered highly rated players)...would give up a record 90 points in consecutive playoff games (sure the injuries at NO didn't help, but still, coming out in that game and playing the way they did before the injuries---soft zones, no tackling, etc., did not set a positive or aggressive tone in the least). I know, I know...let it go. Still it's hard to.

Mitch - Given your enthusiam for playing "Let's make a deal", yesterday's carnage sets the stage for what may turn out to be your most exciting and enjoyable off-season ever. A few thoughts -

1. In free agency, you expect to win a few/lose a few (maybe even lose a little bit more than you win). But we went 0 for 3 in Pro Bowl talent.

2. A down & dirty roster-analysis suggests we are 6 - 8 players away from being as good as we were last year:

QB - No depth behind a talented but not a proven rock solid starter.

RB - Decent depth and versatility behind our starting tandem (but could use a short yardage thumper).

WR - Good talent and decent depth despite Boldin's departure

TE - Iffy starting talent and no depth.

OL - It wasn't as good as needed a year ago. Thin at center. Expected switching of positions (i.e. Levi to LT and promotion of Keith or Johnson) represent questionmarks. At the very least we lack depth. Some would say we need to add a primo LT.

DL - Assuming 3-4 configuration - Pretty good both talent and depthwise.

LB - We're thin and lack proven talent both inside and outside. Where's our pass rush going to come from?

DB - Decimated at FS. Thin in depth and talent at CB (though Toler's development could help a lot)

ST - Is Rackers a UFA or under contract?

3. It's still a bit early to put together a decent 1st round mock let alone a 7-round mock. This draft seems to be characterized by fewer than normal blue-chippers but a very deep plateau of solid NFL-caliber prospects- fairly equal in talent - that could extend at least into the 5th round. Because of this, I'd expect that every one of the 32 NFL draft boards will look very different from one another (because each scouting dept. will rate individual players differently).

Which makes it very unclear which players will still be on our board each time we pick.

4. There are certain prospects who intrigue me - either because they're (a) super athletic or (b) pure football players. A few of them by position:

QB - Skelton. J Brown. L Brown

RB/FB - Gerhart, Blount

WR - Dickerson (TE)

TE - None (besides Dickerson)

OL - Iupati, Campbell, Veldheer,

DL - B Graham, Pierre-Paul

LB - Chaney

DB - Cook, K Wilson, McCourty, Jefferson

This isn't to say that we should ignore some of the other more heralded athletes - I'm just extra-intrigued by the guys I've listed.

5. Final point - While it would be nice to have Larry Foote's veteran presence and grit in the locker room, from a PR standpoint: indicating that we're "bringing him in for a visit" doesn't quite match the loss of three Pro Bowlers in one freakin' day.

Bingo!...and lets not forget costing us the Super Bowl.

It's time to renew the defense.

And hopefully Graves does not panic and overpay any of the FA's. Spend the money wisely.

He needs to sign them to team friendly contracts so if they are stop gaps then we can let them go in 1 or 2 years without ruining our cap/salary situation.

FWIW Mitch- Joey Porter was cut and signing him will not count as one of our $5.5 mil + FAs so we could sign him and two other guys of that level.

Pro Bowlers? Q was the only pro bowler and we were compensated somewhat for him. The other 2 are not pro bowlers (yes Rolle went to the PB but only because every other FS in the conference decided not to).

Does anyone believe Porter could translate to the WILB spot? He moves pretty well and is a decent tackler.

I'd like to go younger on the edges.

How could they let these key superbowl players go!? will be the mantra as well.

They did not let them go, the players chose to leave for overhyped and over paid contracts.

If this were, say, the steelers/pats/colts they would be saying what a responsibile franchise they are.

Good read & points Mitch. Yesterday was a major kick in the nuts to most Big Red fans & probably some of the players mentally. We lost 3 of our better players on the roster though I see the pros & cons to the moves, its part of the game. But as of today this team is nowhere near as good as it was in January losing 6 starters & possibly more.

1) The future of this team rides either on the shoulders (funny) of Leinart or our ability to acquire a top 10 QB somhow. History says we will not reach our goal of a Super Bowl title without one.

Colt Mccoy could be the man & I really like Levi Brown from Troy as a project. Tavaris Jackson or Thigpen could be solid options, but if I'm the Cards I'm doing everything I can to acquire McCoy bcause he may be the answer to lead us to the promised land.

2) A gaping hole the size of the Grand Canyon is now in the center of our defense with the losses 'Los & Rolle & the lack of a legit 3-4 NT. While both weren't great players they certainly were good enough & important pieces to help a team achieve a Super Bowl berth & win more playoff games in 2 seasons than it had in 90 years.

Weatherspoon & Williams at NT would be nice pieces to add thru the draft. I really hope the Cards don't spend alot of $$$ of a spare S in Ware. Thomas could be a wise pickup in the draft because I think he is the true ballhawk at the FS position ala Ed Reed. The FS from the Steelers may now be the teams priority #1 signing.

Wiz, Graves & the scouting dept will have to earn their fat new contracts starting today because the cannons have been shot into the bow of our playoff ship. Go get 'em Wiz.

IMO - we would be wasting his number one skill - getting after the QB.

And, we are getting younger at the edges. We have Brown, a de facto rookie, and Davis who showed a few flashes. What we require is an experienced vet "a la B-Train" to take us through the transition.

Foote is the guy with the background and skills at the WILB position.

A very good take on yesterday's events, thanks again for the efforts.

But I believe that the Seahawks have the #6 and the #14 (from Denver) so they could still get Bradford if he's available.

Bradford and Spiller could give the Hawks a quick turnaround, but the rumors or flying that they might sign Brandon Marshall to an offer sheet.

And I'm also beginning to think the Lambs will select Bradford over Suh. As great a talent Suh is, DT's going #1 has been failure in the past & the Lambs have 3 highly picked Dlineman already.

Used to be his #1 skill. He's slowing down. It's young mans game. His savy might go a long way in the middle.

B-Train was invisable almost towards the latter part of his stay here.

But if you guys think that Porter can walk the walk and not just be a talker at this stage of his career than go for it. I think you'll be dissapointed with him on the edge.

Persnally , I think Campbell would best fit Berry's old role now.

One of you more unemotional, unbiased, and balanced pieces yet.

But I have to disagree with Ayodele. He is not an excellent pass defender even in the slightest. In fact from the Miami media he is actually pretty bad at it. Dude has allowed more then 80% of the passes he was defending to be completed over the last two years.
