Yup, I think Kirk is a mediocre comfy blanket for Kyler where mediocrity is accepted and keeps our introverted hobbit from being forced to hang with the humans and high elves on the sidelines where he can learn to be more vocal

I think he's more worried about who Keim would replace him with.
If he knew they were getting a legit upgrade I'm sure he'd be ok. If we're signing Nelson Alghlor after he gets cut in NE...ehhh

Worrying about Kliff and Kyler is just ludicrous if you really watched these freaking games. Questioning Simmons or Collins is equally unproductive. The problem is at the line of scrimmage, and Keim needing an obvious green light because unlike Hudson or Watt he cannot draft accordingly

High-end pass rushers lately hit the open market. One of them is about to.The Cardinals aren’t expected to apply the franchise tag to veteran defensive end Chandler Jones, clearing the way for him to go wherever he wants to go in free agency. The report regarding the team’s plans comes from Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.
It’s no surprise. Given that Jones had a cap number of $20.176 million in 2021, the rules would entitle him to a 20-percent raise and, in turn, a franchise tender (and cap number) of $24.192 million for 2022. The cap-strapped Cardinals would have a hard time carrying that number into the new league year.
Jones started his contract year with a bang, racking up five sacks in Week One. He went eight weeks, however, before getting another sack. He finished the regular season with 10.5.
Regardless, someone will pay him on the open market. The game currently is primarily about great quarterback play and interrupting great quarterback play. Great pass rushers can do that. With plenty of teams having plenty of money to spend and with Jones having a recognizable name and undeniable skills, someone will pay Jones at the start of free agency — because someone always does.

That could create $30-35m this year. I wouldn’t touch Hop’s deal right now. His future cap hits beyond this season are pretty massive…

A Phillips cut equals $4m cap relief. Would rather lower his base from $10m to $6m and move $4m to existing void years.
I'm not going to cut a starter (Phillips) for a backup (Kennard) to reach the same savings.
subTotal: $18.5 in cap space
New deal for Humphries and either a new deal or restructure for Pugh. Pugh took a pay cut and would probably request his release if that was the approach again, and this creates a hole on the O-line.
subtotal: $18.5 + ? (too many ways to structure these deals to come forth with a firm number to add.)
Budda restructure is an additional option.
All of this in total creates more than enough to play in FA given the structuring of new deals.

It's an accounting trick under the CBA that allows you to transfer present costs against a future cap and thus raise the available cap in the current league year. However, there is a limit to how many times it can be used to manage an existing contract.

Sure, he can run mediocre routes, cannot get jack crap as far as run after the catch (so much for pre-draft evaluations), and has a remarkable penchant for dropping balls when it counts... you can have him, he cannot lick the cleats of Roy Green or even Steve Breaston

Chandler Jones has regularly been among the league's most productive pass-rushers for a decade. He's tallied no fewer than 10.5 sacks in five healthy seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, too.
But the Cardinals have a dilemma.
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport said Arizona does not plan to use the franchise tag on Jones, making him a free agent. Still, per Rapoport, the Cardinals want to re-sign Jones at a lower cost than the approximately $24-25 million the tag would run.
In theory, this is doable. Jones, however, requested a trade before the 2021 campaign anyway, and the Cardinals are just a couple thousand dollars on the correct side of the salary cap.
Once he hits free agency, Jones will likely be gone

This is why stats should be looked at in context, 10.5 sacks...5 in one game...so 5 sacks in 16 games is 1 sack every 3 games for the rest of the year, he's gone anyway

Fifth-year option salaries set for 2019 first-round picks
NFL teams have until May 2 to make decisions about picking up fifth-year options for their 2019 first-round picks and the league set the salaries that go with those options on Monday.Those salaries are guaranteed when the option is picked up and come in four different categories. The lowest level is equal to the average of the 3rd to 25th highest salaries at their position over the past five seasons while players who have played 75 percent of their team’s snaps in two seasons or 50 percent over their first three seasons get salaries equal to the 3rd to 20th highest salaries at their position.
Players who have made one Pro Bowl have a salary equal to the transition tag while players with multiple Pro Bowl appearances earn the same as this year’s franchise tag. Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is in that group and he kicks off this year’s list of players in line for options as the first overall pick from 2019.

The down-side of drafting to fill a need and foregoing BPA is that you underdraft from round to round - i.e. pass on a 1st round talent in order to, say, plug in a 2nd round TE or 3rd round pass rusher because you need one badly.
The most I’ll concede is that we bend the rules by drafting the athlete who can best help our team instead of “best athlete.”
