I would feel a lot better about CJ leaving if we had any type of a plan to replace him, but this team is completely devoid of young pass rushers. Replacing him with Devon Kennard is not a realistic option. Neither is expecting Golden to be your #1 pass rusher.

Honestly, though, why not? It can be very successful to use fresh waves of B- pass rushers to create pressure on opponents. You can go to war with Kennard, Golden, Dennis Gardeck, and a first- or second-day draft pick.

Gardeck got ZERO pressure on QB's last year.

the bigger issue for me is that he will be 28 when the season starts and is undersized for an edge player. Obviously it comes down to the number but he is a unique fit.
He fit more than fine two years ago when he was second in the entire league in TFL

you might as well have put Ouchie in that list up there instead of Gardeck because he’d have the same impact.

Fake news. He had 4 QB hits and 6 pressures last season per Pro-Football-Reference. He's not the guy who got 7 sacks in like 9 defensive snaps in 2021, but he'll likely get 5 sacks as a rotational player.

The Cards' OLBs got 21.5 sacks last season. Kennard and Gardeck had 0 of them. If the unit gets 25 next year, I don't really care how they're distributed.

it feels like that was the Patriots method for a few years post Chandler. Also the Cards method in 2020 without Chandler (but with Reddick)

That was their philosophy before they traded for CJ, but it didn't work out so well. I also think you need a much better D-line to to go with an OLB by committee scheme. If Zach Allen is the best player on your D-line, you need to do better than a 30-year-old Devon Kennard on the edge.

Of course, the quality of that 1st or 2nd day pick would also mean a lot. That's why I wanted Ojulari over Rondale Moore in the 2nd round last year.

Kennard might work if they increase the interior pass rush with someone like Calais.

I wonder what people here think about run stopping vs sacks?

Chandler sucked vs the run last year and so did the team. He basically sold out for the pass rush every down and still only had 10 sacks. No thought involved.

With that in mind would you rather have CJ and say 12 sacks, 35 pressures and 12 TFL's but have a garbage run D or...

Have Kennard and 7 sacks, 25 pressures but 20 TFL's and 30 yards a game less vs the run?

I hate to nitpick, but you believe swapping Kennard for jones nets a negative 30 yards?!? That may be overrating the swap by a LOT.

He also got routinely washed vs the run either getting trucked at point of attack or over-pursuing from the backside. He is a little like Isaiah Simmons in that he is a unique player whose body doesn't really fit with what he does best. Reddick's skills are great as an edge guy but his frame is not really built for it. That is why Carolina played him off-ball as a 4-3 OLB in base and then dropped him to the edge on pass rush downs.

@Chopper0080 How do you feel about a 3 round draft of:

Zion Johnson
Breece Hall
Cade Otton(severely underrated receiving skills & really good blocker)

That’s really low from a premium position aspect, but the offense would be way more respectable in the trenches. One Kliff does really good is draw up a run game so I would love to see those new pieces added to it.

I like the players. FA will likely change things. I have a tough time ignoring the EDGE class for three rounds. Also, the WR class will have value.

Like, if I would likely prefer David Ojabo, Darian Kinnard and then a Cade Otton aka TE or RB but it is still a little early.

PFF projects a 2 year, 20 million dollar deal for Ertz. 12 million guaranteed. Bleacher report thinks that is a overpay for the aging TE.

I like Ojabo, but he is really bad against the run. I know you draft EDGEs to rush the passer, but sheesh, gotta pray he gets coached up on that. I also doubt he’ll be there at #23.

Kinnard a little rough around the edges to me. At both OG & OT.

You know I’m a believer of aiming premium positions high & wouldn’t draft those positions where we’re projected at, but I think we need a identity change. Run the ball more & I think those 3 can set the tone doing that. Will have to overpay on defense in FA.

Seeing these big FA names, I can't help but think What about Patriots' secondary coaching is so effective. They developed a Pro bowl outside CB out of UDFA not once, but twice in the last decade. How did they do it? On the contrary (I know it's getting old), we can't even develop our 1st pick in the second round to perform at a consistent level. Why didn't we go hire someone from their DB coaching room?

I agree with you on this and that is why I don't hate the players or the fit. If we ignore RB in FA, drafting one will be fine. If we add an EDGE in FA, that changes things. TE will probably still be a need and value regardless. WR is up in the air. OL really needs to get bodies and FA isn't a great spot to do so.

Have you taken a dive into Tyler Smith OT from Tulsa. He may have to play OG but I think he could stick at OT as well. Kid is nice.

Hopkins on instagram posted a picture of him in his cardinals uniform with the caption "Life good ya know". People are speculating he's learned about a front office move that he's excited about.
Is anyone out there he has a history with in NFL or college?

Or maybe we extended his deal to lower his cap number (30m) in 2022?

Or maybe he is just saying life is good - being a multi-millionaire and all.
