THE WESTERN DIAMONDBACK HAS LOST ITS BITE
Our middle of the order power -- Goldy, Lamb and Souza (the poor man's Martinez) -- was set to lead our batting order. Then came Goldy's decline, which started in the latter part of last season. Luckily, Pollock stepped up to take his place. Then injuries hit Lamb and Souza. Then Pollock. And now it is like starting Spring Training all over again. And the rest of our lineup (with the exception of Descalso and Murphy) is pathetic. And, for some unknown reason, Murphy hardly ever starts. I don't think he has started two games in a row all season.
The power hitters we've counted on this season, like Lamb, Souza and Pollock, haven't learned to use discretion in the field. Hustle is great. But they should know by now that risking injury is just not worth it for one play. All of which has put put more pressure on a declining Goldy. And his failure has put pressure on the rest of the team (like Avila).
All of which has put pressure on our pitching staff. Injuries and inconsistency among the starters, who we thought were a solid group. And our three closers. The Beard is now routinely giving up 2-run home runs. Then there's our middle inning relievers, which is a putrid bunch.
The D-backs have been a much better team facing lefty pitchers. Playing so many games vs. the Dodgers early and their predominantly lefty starting rotation is why we've been in 1st place. But we won't see them again until the end of August.
And we have become a losing team, about to drop in the standings. Just as with Goldy, it is not a "slump".
It was fun while it lasted.
