Diamondbacks' Robbie Ray: Completes another bullpen session
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Ray (oblique) threw a bullpen session Friday and is expected to throw off a mound again Monday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Ray was cleared for mound work earlier this week, but only threw fastballs in his first session. The particulars of Ray's session Friday aren't known, but it's believed that he incorporated more breaking pitches this time around. He'll likely use his full repertoire Monday in what could be his final session before he resumes facing hitters in live batting practice.

Diamondbacks' Steven Souza: Scheduled for examination Monday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Souza (pectoral) will undergo a follow-up MRI on Monday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

The MRI should provide more insight into how Souza is progressing from the strained right pectoral, an injury he aggravated May 21 against the Brewers. Souza landed on the 10-day disabled list a day later and has yet to resume baseball activities, but he could be cleared to do so during the upcoming week if the MRI reveals that the outfielder has healed as anticipated.

Diamondbacks' Jorge De La Rosa: Placed on DL with Achilles injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
De La Rosa (Achilles) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Saturday, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic Arizona reports.

He left Friday's game with right Achilles tightness, and it's serious enough that he required a DL stint. Jake Barrett was recalled from Triple-A Reno to take De La Rosa's spot in the bullpen.

Diamondbacks' Jake Barrett: Recalled from Triple-A
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Barrett was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Saturday, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic Arizona reports.

Jorge De La Rosa (Achilles) landed on the disabled list, so the Diamondbacks needed to add a fresh arm to the bullpen. Barrett has a 3.92 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 83 strikeouts in 87.1 career innings in the big leagues.

Diamondbacks' Randall Delgado: Restarting rehab assignment Monday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Delgado (shoulder) is scheduled to make a rehab appearance for High-A Visalia on Monday, the Associated Press reports.

Delgado endured no complications after pitching in an extended spring training game Friday, so he'll take another step forward in his recovery during the upcoming week by facing hitters in an uncontrolled setting. After opening the season on the disabled list due to an oblique strain, Delgado was pulled off his minor-league rehab assignment in late April after experiencing shoulder soreness. He spent the subsequent six weeks rehabbing the shoulder issue and seems to be back to full health, allowing him to focus on building his arm up again after the long layoff.

Diamondbacks select Kristopher Negron, option Socrates Brito
The Arizona Diamondbacks announced they selected infielder/outfielder Kristopher Negron from Triple-A Reno and optioned outfielder Socrates Brito to Reno on Monday.

In eight games this season for the D-backs, Brito had just two hits in 17 plate appearances.

Over the last 14 games in Reno, Negron has gone .438 with four doubles, two triples and five RBI. Overall, he hit .259 with three home runs and 13 RBI in Triple-A.

He is a versatile option on defense: Negron has played 25 games at second base, 16 at third and 11 in the outfield. Last season, he played every defensive position except catcher for Reno.

I wonder why Brito didn't do better, even in a short test. Power hitter. Good fielder as a corner outfielder.

Was it because, for most of the time he was here before he was benched, the D-backs lineup was anemic around him?

And before the coaching staff finally abandoned their philosophy of 'see the ball in a quadrant as it leaves the pitcher's hand' rather than 'follow the ball to the plate'.

I don't oppose new thinking ... unless it makes no sense. Look at the results. And now, the difference. Averaging one run and two hits per game was pathetic.

While we're on the subject, here are some injury updates: Steven Souza Jr. had an MRI today that showed healing in his pec, but he's not fully back. A.J. Pollock got a CT scan on his thumb which showed progress, but not enough to remove the soft cast.

Diamondbacks' A.J. Pollock: Still requires cast on thumb
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Pollock will continue to wear a cast over his fractured left thumb after a CT scan Monday revealed that the digit hasn't healed enough for him to forgo the protection, the Associated Press reports.

Pollock's continued need for the cast also means that he isn't ready to resume baseball activities, making it difficult to pinpoint when exactly he'll be ready to return from the 10-day disabled list. Shortly after Pollock first suffered the injury May 14, the Diamondbacks projected the outfielder to miss 4-to-8 weeks. At this point, it appears safe to conclude that Pollock won't be able to meet the short end of that recovery timetable.

Diamondbacks' Kris Negron: Dropped from 40-man
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Negron was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, Jack Magruder of The Sports Xchange reports.

Negron was the roster casualty the Diamondbacks needed to clear a spot on their roster for Jon Jay, who was acquired from the Royals via trade Wednesday. The 32-year-old was hitting .259/.355/.382 across 55 games with Triple-A Reno prior to being cut loose. The utility man will now take a spin through waivers to determine where he'll report next.

Randall Delgado making strides in return to Diamondbacks' bullpen
SAN FRANCISCO – After tossing a scoreless inning in the first outing of his rehab assignment for High-A Visalia on Tuesday night, right-hander Randall Delgado's return to the Diamondbacks' bullpen is finally starting to feel imminent, manager Torey Lovullo said. Delgado will still need multiple outings as the Diamondbacks give him a chance to have the sort of “spring training” he missed out on in March. But with a fastball that Lovullo said touched 93 mph on Tuesday, Delgado is finally starting to look like the pitcher he was last season. Delgado missed time in spring training due to an oblique injury, and when he began a rehab assignment for that injury in April, he didn't look right, featuring

Souza underwent an MRI on Monday that revealed he's still dealing with some swelling in his right pectoral area, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Souza had been hopeful that doctors would clear him to resume baseball activities after the reevaluation, but it appears the outfielder will be idle for a little longer while he waits for the pain in his upper body to subside. The 29-year-old has been sidelined for more than two weeks due to the setback and remains without a clear timetable for a return. With Souza's return date up in the air and A.J. Pollock (thumb) appearing unlikely to come off the disabled list until late June at the earliest, the Diamondbacks addressed their dwindling outfield depth Wednesday by acquiring veteran Jon Jay via trade from the Royals.

De La Rosa (Achilles) threw a bullpen session at the Diamondbacks' extended spring training facility Wednesday, the Associated Press reports.

With De La Rosa resuming mound work less than a week after landing on the disabled list, it appears unlikely that he'll be in store for an extended absence. He's expected to face hitters at some point over the weekend and if that goes well, he could be cleared to return from the DL without requiring a minor-league rehab assignment.

Delgado (shoulder) made a one-inning rehab appearance Tuesday for High-A Visalia, giving up one hit and no walks and striking out two.

The 15-pitch outing was Delgado's first affiliated-ball action since April 17, when he made his third rehab appearance for Visalia before being pulled off the assignment due to right shoulder soreness. According to the Associated Press, Arizona skipper Torey Lovullo said that Delgado's fastball topped out around 93 miles per hour Tuesday, which is roughly in line with his average velocity from 2017. That's an indication that Delgado is close to full strength, but he'll probably make another appearance or two in the minors before being reinstated from the 60-day disabled list.

Diamondbacks' Steven Souza: To resume hitting Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Souza (pectoral) will participate in live hitting against Robbie Ray and Jorge De La Rosa on Saturday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

This will be the first time that Souza will take some swings after landing on the disabled list May 22 due to a pectoral injury. The outfielder is anticipated to need a couple more weeks to get back into game shape, though the club has yet to describe a target date for his return.

Diamondbacks' Robbie Ray: Slated to face hitters Saturday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire
Ray (oblique) is scheduled to throw live batting practice Saturday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Steven Souza (pectoral) will stand in against Ray, who is facing hitters for the first time since exiting his April 29 start with a right oblique strain. If the throwing session goes off without a hitch, Ray could be cleared to pitch in a simulated game or minor-league rehab outing at some point next week, which would leave the door open for him to return from the 10-day disabled list before the end of June.

Shipley has made all five of his appearances with Triple-A Reno out of the bullpen since being activated from the 10-day disabled list and optioned to the minors May 18.

Per Steve Gilbert of MLB.com, the success Matt Koch and Clay Buchholz have enjoyed at the back end of the rotation in recent weeks coupled with the impending returns of Shelby Miller (elbow) and Robbie Ray (oblique) from the DL convinced the Diamondbacks they had sufficient organizational starting pitching depth. With that in mind, Shipley has been transitioned to a relief role, which Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen believes with increase the right-hander's chances of making an impact with the big club later this season. Before he gets another call to the majors, however, Shipley will probably have to deliver far better results out of the bullpen. In those five relief outings with Reno, Shipley has given up eight runs (seven earned) on 16 hits and five walks over eight frames.
