I'm glad some of you read the article.

My "neglecting the defense" comment is based on the fact that we have no NFL-caliber CBs, which is something Green always struggled with in Minn.

Berry is definitely an upgrade. But Starks is always hurt, Rhinehart isn't very good, Hill would be a better nickel corner, and Macklin didn't even start in Indy.

Gonna have a hard time shutting down the Rams with that backfield.

What would consist of an NFL caliber CB? All reports indicate that Duane Starks is near 100%. At or near his best, he is a good number one, excellent number two. I was never high on Renaldo Hill, but he improved significantly last year, and was more than servicable. Again, to judge any corners with the pass rush in the last two years is worthless. Let's see what kind of outside rush Berry will provide. I also think that Bryant and Dockett have the potential to have breakout years as well. I find it quite hard to believe the apocalypse is upon this team. I guess we'll see what happens.....

It would be impossible to address every postition that needed to be upgraded on this team. You of all people should know that when Dennis Green took over this team, it had more holes in it than Sponge Bob. The most important thing this team needed on defense was a pass rush. Berry should help there.

However to sign a pass rush specialist like Berry meant we didn't have the money to go after a top CB. Macklin was in the next tier CB wise and should be able to fill in For Barrett. Hill proved he can hold his own and should be a fine nickle back. Starks has had almost a year to get healthy and has already started practicing with the team.

Your article makes it sound like Green has turned a blind eye to the Defensive side of the ball. That was completely untrue.

Well he certainly does seem more preoccupied with the number of points his 3 WR set is going to score with an unproven QB.

If you recall, after the draft I wrote an article calling Dansby "the best pick in the draft" and Dockett an "A+". I also wrote jim skane an email before the draft and told him we'd take Dockett. So believe me, I think those guys are great additions. But Dansby isn't going to contribute immediately and it remains to be seen if Dockett will be a difference maker, especially rotating with Bryant and K King.

David Macklin is just a body. He is a downgrade from Barrett. Talking about Macklin's signing as an "addition" to the D is pretty silly. At best he's a trade-off for Barrett and in reality he's probably not as good. He just wasn't very good in Indy.

Jim Skane has reported that there is still a lingering injury with Starks, and given that he's been hurt constantly since the day we signed him, you can't count on him at all at this point. It remains to be seen if he can even play let alone how well. To assume that a dude coming off a blown ACL is a shut-down corner is a big "if".

ps - Duane Starks is the fastest human being I've ever seen when he was healthy. In flagstaff last year, even while he was injured and not practicing, he would run half-assed and he still looked like he was on roller stakes. So if he's healthy he's an asset. But it remains to be seen that he's at 100%. And don't forget that in his first year he wasn't very good before he got hurt. So he needs to prove himself.

He was easily the best cornerback on the team when he was signed and before he was hurt. This is an assinine statement. At 80%, Duane Starks is better than anyone else on the roster.

Starks is a second-tier cornerback, but he's just as good as anyone that's not McAllister, Bailey, Law, Woodson, or Rolle.

Duh, Green is an offensive guy. Of course he is excited about his young offense.

I agree that the rookies probably won't make a huge impact this year. I agree that we are thin at CB. However I am just pointing out that aside from Fitzgerald, all of the big additions have come on the defensive side of the ball. Which totally blows out of the water your theory that Green is neglecting the Defense.

Denny is nothing like Buddy.

Buddy was king of bluster, a big talker, an intimidator. His success came as a defensive coordinator, a position that kept him protected from his own backward bumpkin roots.

Denny is smooth, a west coast guy, a guy smart enough to land a TV job anylizing the NFL. Denny's coaching pedigree is top of the line from the very beginning of his career. Denny has trained some of the top head coaches in the NFL right now.

I trust Denny's track record for spotting, and training great coaches. These great coaches will get the most out of our players.

I'll bet Denny Green has never taken a swing at one of his fellow coordinators on the sidelines during a game.

Interesting comparisons, many of them apples to oranges. You can't compare Fitzgerald to Larry Tharpe. And you can't compare the Cardinal team that Ryan took over to the one that Green is taking over now. The one Green is taking over is dead last in nearly every major statistical category and has one of the most pathetic NFL defenses I think I've ever witnessed. Ryan took over a top 10 offense with a very good offensive line and decimated it in one off season. The D wasn't bad either when he got here. That was a .500 team on the way up.

I guess it remains to be seen how much of this change is for real. I would suspect that Shelton will be starting here again real soon. He was the Card's next best OL after a healthy Kendall.

I'm all for giving Green his way in molding this team. It sure can't be any worse than what we've witnessed under Tobin/Mac. As long as the team gives full effort for all four quarters, I will be satisfied, even if they lose. What bothers me is the constant losing and lack of accountability. I hope Green CUTS the first guy that gives up after a couple of quick scores this season as an example to the rest of them.

It is time to separate the Boldins from the guys who just want to pick up a fat game check each week!

Macklin is very definitely an NFL-caliber cornerback. If Starks is healthy, the starting CB's should be fine. The depth may be a question, but the starts should be solid.

Right on, if it happens he should do it right from the sideline during the game!

I just do not see any similarities to DG and BR other than they are both examples of the Cardinals deviating from their normal hiring practices for head coaches and bucking up bigger $ for a more proven type of coach than promoting an assistant.

BR was a great DC and that is all he really ever did well he stunk as a head coach. He was so horribly one sided about football that he might as well have just punted on 1st down every time. I am only slightly exaggerating this he almosted exploded trying to be a DC on a run and shoot team.

DG is known as an offensive football coach but he had top ten defenses something BR could never ever reach similarly with his offenses.

DG runs a pretty familiar Offense and Defense as compared to the rest of the NFL. This means that he can take other peoples draft picks and shuffle them some but someone else could come in tomorrow and still be able to find players to fit their system. To top that off he is more than willing to start rookies.

BR just brought in his aging players and gave them huge deals, I think partly because he wanted too and partly because he could and didn't really care. Add that too his unusual scheme take a dash complete indifference or downright hatred of offensive players and you get a complete burndown of a roster that is useless to anyone but BR.

BR played a desperate franchise for all it was worth. DG saw opportunity and took it. BIG BIG differnce IMHO.

First of all if Macklin is just a body then Barrett is as well, and if he wasnt any good in Indy then Barrett wasnt any good in AZ.

Code:
From ESPN.com

Name	Games	Started	Tackle	Ints	PD
Barrett	62	39	219	6	29
Macklin	64	37	177	7	37

Looks as if Barrett is a better run support CB while Macklin is the better coverage CB. So lets call it a wash. Now let me ask what did Barrett get paid and what is Macklin getting paid? If you dont want to look it up I will give you a hint there is a big difference in our favor.

After answering that question, then tell me that Macklin was a downgrade from Barrett.

You apparently know nothing about Macklin as you thought he never even started before which is far from the truth(including good playoff time)

You say it like you actually mean it and now this is a fact or something.

So your judgement on the guy has absolutly no barring IMO as you know nothing about him. Heck you wont even do any homework on the guy yet you feel you can make a judgement on him.

As for Starks he is getting nothing but praise from every report I have seen. Not just from our own ASFN guys but from the media as well. He has also passed physicals with as the doctor put it, "flying colors".

BS. I saw 16 Colts games last season and probably a half-dozen the season before. Macklin wasn't a full time starter, but he started more than a few games and got plenty of snaps. He was a key contributor in the playoffs last year, as well.

joeshmo, slight nit, but it's in your favor so...

Maklin has at least 9 interceptions, not 7. He had two vs. Denver in the playoffs in addition to the one in the regular season. I don't know why post season stats aren't added to the season totals but looking at the carreer totals will only give you his regular season totals. So in reality he could have more if he got some in previous postseasons. I've only been able to find game splits for this year though.

Obviously, we don't have to worry about Barrett's post season INT's. ;)
