If they can trade for a legit #2 they should be in contention for at least the next 3-4 years.
IMO that's worth giving up top prospects.

We have a legit #2, his name is Patrick Corbin. Over the past 2 seasons (not including one lost to Tommy John) he's pitched 293 IP with a 3.46 ERA.

Absolutely but it seems like the Dbacks still want at least one more arm.

I have always liked Patrick Corbin as a near-the-top-of-the-rotation starter, but the reference to Tommy John is a disclaimer that must be included.

I would rather see Tony La Russa slot him for #3 and continue looking for a #2. That would be awesome!

And unlike 2001, it wouldn't be a one-and-done. It was great. But more is better.

ESPN reporting we're close to signing Mike Leake...

This one I'm not excited about. Signing free agents from the middle of the pool tends to do yield little improvement and comes at a premium cost.

Outside of 2013 he has been pretty mediocre and the peripherals suggest there is not much to improve upon.

Sources: #DBacks agree to acquire Shelby Miller from #Braves, pending a review of medical records.

Braves had insisted on A.J. Pollock in any deal for Shelby Miller. Source says he is not in the trade.

Hoping we didn't give up Peralta...if we managed to keep him I will be ecstatic about the trade. If we have him up I will still be excited. Glad this FO isn't a pushover, a breath of fresh air.

Hearing from multiple sources Ender Inciarte, Aaron Blair and Dansby Swanson are involved in the Shelby Miller deal.

Liking this trade more and more. Peralta needs to be an everyday player, not platooning, Ender was a decent player, Peralta is way better.

Need to get a closer now. Wish we would have dealt for K-Rod but oh well. Who's still out there?

It's a little early, but wouldn't be too surprised if Rubby/Huddy takes over that role.

That said, can you explain to me why Zigs isn't a viable closer?

Viable? Sure... he's proven to be a "viable" closer. But is he "ideal"? No, he's not. He is terrific in situations when a ground ball is needed... so when there is a chance to induce a double-play, Zeigler is fantastic.
But, when we need a strikeout and/or when putting a ball in play is NOT what is called for (Runner on 2nd or 3rd with less than two outs for instance), Zeigler isn't that type of prototypical, hard-throwing strikeout machine of a closer...
See the Royals and Mets as examples of teams that possess the type of pens/closers that would illustrate "ideal" situations...

I'm pretty excited. I think we are contenders to win the NL West and should at least be looking at a wild card spot this season.

For what we've committed and given up we'd better be more than just wild card contenders.

Apparently we are having lunch with Texas today to discuss swapping one of our starting pitchers for one of their relievers.

So...you argument is that he isn't an ideal closer because he isn't ideal in your theoretical "situational pitcher" scenario? Closers more often than not come in with clean bases, so not sure why the scenario above is relevant.

The guy converted 30 of 32 save opps, with a 1.85 ERA - I'd love to know any team that wouldn't want those numbers from a closer. Just because he doesn't throw 98 doesn't mean he isn't extremely effective as a closer.

Again, IMHO... as I said, he's viable (which is what I believe you asked).

Just curious, because Zig reminds me of Dan Quissenberry, who was a closer (right?)...how hard did Dan throw back in the day? Also, I like that you referenced coming in with clean bases, because back in the day that wasn't usually the case.
