the kid is a solid ball player,....but IMO he would have been available with the fourth round pick........if he keeps his head on straight he could be a huge asset to the team.....if,....if,....if,.....

We got some hawks on defense.

Just not at the OLB position. In the 3-4 it is kind of important.

He is on my team now so I am behind him now. If and that' if he can put that stuff behind him and get his head straight this could be a huge score for us.

I'll agree with this.

He's also good to great with Punt Returns so that will help keep PP more focused on taking the next step up at CB.

He also said that in the call they talked about him needing to hold up his end of the bargain and there would be things in the contract. Said weekly drug tests.

I did find it funny when he said all those things were 7-8 months ago. That's he'd crossed that bridge.

But he's a great talent on the field.

One of the stations (can't remember now) talked about how he was a good pick to help bust up the zone read with his amazing space awareness.

If you knew the whole about this kids tough life as a child and on, you couldn't help but root for him and forgive him for the drug addiction. Most of us would probably gotten addicted too, if we didn't kill ourselves first.

NFL network told about his connection with Peterson and Peterson's dad, how they work together in off season. The kid has a friend and family to be with here and that will give him more of a chance to succeed. Hopefully he can. But if he can't, I won't go negative on him. He has a lot of demons to fight forever, and it won't be surprising if they get the best of him at times. We all need to keep showing love to him no matter how long it takes him to get it together as the years go by.

I am glad we got him. He could easily turn out to be the best DB of this draft with all the talent he has.

one thing not to overlook.. We can potentially put the badger back on punt return without a significant dropoff from Peterson... and not exposing our pro bowl corner to any unnecessary injury risk.

Scouts Inc profile:

Overall Football Traits

Production 1 2010: (13/1) 57-7-2 2011: (13/13) 70-7-22012: DNP Career: 11 FF, 6 FR (2 for TDs). 15 TFL, 6 sacks. PRs 26-420-16.2-2

Height-Weight-Speed 4 Is shorter than the average NFL CB and is right on the NFL CB average with weight, 40-yard dash time (4.50), hand span (9.3) and arm length (31.1).

Durability 2 Was durable during first two seasons at LSU (2010-'11). Lack of size and style of play do; however, create concern for long-term durability in NFL.

Intangibles 5 Hard worker. Seemingly endless amount of energy. Highly confident. However, enters the league with significant amount of off-the-field baggage. Served a one-game suspension (Auburn) in 2011 for violating the team's drug policy. In August of 2012, dismissed from team for violation of team policy (failed multiple drug tests) and entered a drug rehab center in Houston. Returned to school as a regular student, hoping to earn a second chance at returning to the team but was arrested on October 26, 2012 (along with three former LSU football players) and charged with simple possession of marijuana. He said during combine interviews that the last time he took an illegal substance was October 26, 2012. Maternal grandfather, Lorenzo Mathieu, helped raise him until he died of complications from a heart attack when Mathieu was 5. His biological mother, Tyra Mathieu has five children, and Tyrann was the only one she didn't raise, leaving him to live with a maternal uncle and aunt -- his adoptive parents (Tyrone and Sheila Mathieu) -- after his grandfather's death. His biological father, Darrin Hayes, is serving a life sentence in the Louisiana State Penitentiary for murder.

Cornerback Specific Traits

Instincts/Recognition 1 Very good natural instincts. Has a rare nose for the football. Very comfortable in space. Reads QBs' eyes effectively. Understands angles and leverage. Knows when to break off of coverage and attack the football. Will occasionally get caught biting and needs to learn when to tone down the aggressiveness.

Cover Skills 3 Erratic footwork. Backpedal is a mess. Gets too high, loses balance and gets feet crossed up at times. But he's very quick, fluid and sudden. Shows good closing burst when ball is in front of him. Better in zone coverage than in man-to-man. Very natural in space. Gives up a lot of size to bigger WRs. Will have man-to-man matchup limitations in the NFL. Inconsistent at reading WRs routes and will bite on some double moves. Frequently in trail position and can struggle to get head turned around in time to locate the ball.

Ball Skills 2 Natural playmaker. Adept at stripping the ball and forcing fumbles. Always seems to be in on big plays. Has better than average hands. Takes good angles, gets early jumps on the ball and attacks it at highest point when in position to do so. Can struggle to locate the ball over his shoulder. Has shown big-play ability as a punt return specialist.

Run Support 2 Undersized and can get caught up in trash on occasion. If bigger blockers get into his body they can sometimes push him around. But generally plays much bigger than size and bench press results (4 reps at combine) might indicate. Spends good majority of time near the line of scrimmage. Is crafty at sifting through traffic and staying off of blocks. Fills extremely hard. Is fearless. Will occasionally miss some tackles (usually when he comes in too hot) but has much better pop than most CBs his size. Shows ability to take down bigger ball carriers.

true, but far more so for a player who has serious issues in the maturity department,...which Honey Badger has

my hope is that he really understands what a blessing it is for him to get this chance,...and that his friendship with PP,....will combine to help the young man grow up and keep his impulses under control.....if he that happens then we just made one hell of a pick.......in all honesty I believe being drafted by the Cards gives him his best opportunity to be successful and I will be rooting for him.

long but worth the read... http://espn.go.com/espn/feature/story/_/page/Tyrann-Mathieu/hi-my-name-tyrann

esp liked this part...

Patrick Peterson stands at Mathieu's side with a stopwatch. Mathieu's best friend, now a two-time Pro Bowler for the Arizona Cardinals, shares the same agent and has agreed to devote three months of his offseason to mentoring Mathieu. Peterson is everything Mathieu wants to become: a 22-year-old with Hall of Fame potential, a mansion in Arizona and a sterling reputation. Peterson has started a journal to detail his work with Mathieu, taking daily notes on their drills and writing down the motivational aphorisms "Eyes to the future" and "Win it all back" and "Put all your eggs in one basket."

On this morning, Peterson decides that Mathieu is not even ready to sprint the entire 40 yards in practice. First he needs to master the 10-yard start, perfecting every micro-movement of his acceleration.

"Come on, Ty. Not good. Get your hips lower," Peterson says after Mathieu runs one, in 1.47 seconds.

"Straighter, faster," he says, after another one in 1.43.

"You're not impressing anybody," he says, after another in 1.41.

Peterson often tells Mathieu that a good defensive back needs to be in the best shape of any player on the field, and he uses that mantra again and again to push his protégé to the brink of collapse. They sprint together in a sandbox. They do aerobics in a swimming pool. They stretch with resistance bands. They spin in circles to dizzy themselves before sparring in a boxing ring, disoriented, punch-drunk, leaning against each other or the ropes. "I want to find your breaking point," Peterson tells him.
