Actually, they had the first pick in the 1980 draft, as well. But coincidentally enough, ended up trading it to Golden State for the third pick and Robert Parish. Then Boston used the third pick to select Kevin McHale. GS took Joe Barry Carroll with the first pick.

Needless to say, brilliant move on Boston's part.

It builds an argument for trading down from the #1 pick unless there is a superstar quality player available.

If the Suns should get the first pick I would like for them to consider the same.

Both players the Celtics got in that deal were better than Joe "Barely Cares"

Arguably the best single trade in NBA history. Two HOFers for a guy who had at best a so-so career. GS also got the 13th pick in the same draft in the trade, which they used on Rickey Brown, another center (like JB Carroll) who was more of a washout than Carroll.

Parrish was 26, had averaged 17, 11, and 1.6 blocks the year before. He wasn't a superstar, but he was a very good center. McHale was all about length.

Sometimes people miss real value for the hype.

This was a real steal for Boston but Tractor for Dirk also has to be in the conversation for worst NBA trade ever. Not to mention the Bucks trade of Kareem and the Celtics (again) trading for Bill Russell. Also, the Sonics really ripped off the Bulls when they suckered them into trading Olden Polynice for some small college walk-on.

Starting? I'm a Suns fan. Nervous is where I live!

I'm trying to downplay the lottery as a psychological maneuver. :D

My dread is the backlash on the forum if the Suns drop... especially to #4.

Need I mention Dennis Johnson for Rick Robey?

No, I guess I shouldn't. :)

Ive been saying since day one in Tucson: Ayton's offensive upside is unlimited. The one area I would have questions about is him creating offense off the dribble. Can he develop a little shake and some handle like Embiid? If so, I think everything plays, or will play with some hard work (extending range and consistency, release point, ect. on his jumper).

"A" as in Ayton is the first letter of the alphabet.

I want him to be our first pick. :)

So I would say his floor is a poor mans Demarcus Cousins. I will be shocked if he isn't at least 18 and 10 in the NBA.
You’re being way too generous. Do you know how many bigs actually averaged 18 & 10 in the NBA last season? Not that many.

Ayton’s ceiling is incredible but his floor may also very well be Hasheem Thabeet.

I don't see that at all. Thabeet showed impressive potential on the defensive end but scouts were leery of his ability to hold up against power players. And he had virtually no offense.

To me, Ayton has a very high floor. I don't think 18 and 10 is out of reach for him at all, even if he improves very little in the NBA. I'm hopeful though still not convinced he'll be a superstar but he'll rack up the stats IMO.

Not saying Thabeet is his comparison, I’m saying that could be his floor. As in worst case scenario.

Why would you want the Suns to draft a player like that then?

You’re describing Ayton as a stat padder on a bottom dweller type player.

I’d rather get an impactful player that can contribute to playoffs and playoff succcess than a stat padder on a team that’s going no where with him being a primary reason why.

His worst case scenario is Odem. A clearly skilled player whom was cursed by injury. The Thabeet comparison is complete nonsense. Thabeet was a three year college player who was no where near as skilled or as strong or as athletic at any point as Ayton has shown.

Barring injury (which can be said about anyone) I guarantee that Ayton will, worst case, put up numbers like 17-10. But... yeah, he might be like Cousins, a guy who puts up stats but they're empty.

His ceiling? I dunno... it's through the roof. No freshmen center has EVER shown his offensive skill set... and he is an athletic freak on top if it. If he develops as a defender then there is no telling how good he could be.

No I'm not. I said he'll rack up the stats, meaning he'll score and he'll rebound. I'm hopeful he'll become a superstar but even if he doesn't I'm confident he'll be in the all star conversation for many years (health assumed).

His ceiling is in that Hakeem/Admiral area. I think his floor is Amare. The only way Thabeet would be his floor is if he arrived in the NBA with no legs.

That’s why this is a no-brainer

Ayton = David Robinson.
Dems fighting words around here.

I will admit. Ayton looks like David Robinson. His frame and the way he carries himself. As far as his game. . . we will see.
