Clown take. Fields is a wreck.
Calling him a wreck is a little overzealous, but I don't really know that he's a consistently winning QB you can rely on... and maybe that's just the environment of Chicago. Maybe he'd succeed in a dome or fair weather environment more often?

I'm not convinced he's anywhere near a franchise guy though. We've had enough years to see it. The weapons at hand don't appear to be the problem, the problem appears to be his inaccuracy.

Even within games, he can be so inconsistent. Very hard to build an offense around a QB like that. Comparing him to Lamar Jackson is next level hilarious.

I'm wholeheartedly worried that we end up in one of two godawful positions:

1. Chicago takes MHJ, Williams and Maye go, we can't legitimately go for drafting Daniels (or whoever ends up at QB3) over Kyler, and so just... make some blah trade back, or take an OT and functionally run the same offense out there next year.
2. Chicago ends up trading back 1-2 spots, getting a haul, and still taking MHJ before us. And we make some blah trade back or take an OT and functionally run the same offense out there next year.

I'm not feeling good that three QBs are going in the top three. And yes, I know Nabers is very good and could be great, anyone can be great, and draft position apparently no longer matters... but come on. I'm also not looking forward to yet another WR who is shorter than I am.

I know there's a lot to sort out. But this is a very bad team, and I don't really see the solution as getting an OT and like, Rome Odunze, hoping and praying he's the Justin Jefferson of this class and not Treylon Burks.
The MHJ going #1 delusions are driving me crazy. If you really feel that way, go lay 20:1 odds at a sportsbook and potentially get rich.

Clown take. Fields is a wreck.

Kevin Clark was addressing Fields this morning on the Football Today podcast (which is excellent, IMO). He said that Justin Fields is never going to be a top 5 QB, and we got spoiled watching a class of QBs in Lamar, Mahomes, Burrow, and Herbert mature so fast that if your guy wasn't the guy in three years, you dumped them in the garbage can.

It was deranged that Paul Calvisi had Kyler on MVP Watch in his second season.

Justin Fields can consistently be a Top 12-ish QB and keep you in games with a chance for the defense to win it. He was 12th in DYAR last week. Gannon is actively trying to turn Kyler Murray into this type of player right now, and a lot of people here can't be more excited about it.

Have a good friend who is a die hard bears fan. There is a significant majority of them that think they are MHJ + an Oline player away from being a playoff team.

They might be! The NFC sucks! Being a playoff team is a good thing, also. But I don't know if that gets them into championship contention in the next two or three years.

It'll be really interesting to see how this year's playoffs turn out. You have two pretty clear classes of QBs: golden-boy signal callers (Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, Lawrence, Dak, Hurts, Stafford) and a group of more working-class operators (Purdy, Love, Goff, Baker, Minshew, Stroud, Tua). How will it shake out?

The absolute best thing the Bears could do is invest in their future by trading down with a QB-needy team and stockpiling draft picks.

But this is the Bears and they will do the opposite of what would make them successful. Did you see Fields’ post-game interview the other day, where he was lamenting about it being his last home game in Soldier Field? He’s as gone as gone could be. They are going to trade him and draft Caleb Williams.

Totally the wrong move IMO as they are way more than a QB away, but it’s the Bears and they haven’t been successful but twice in 50 years, so you have to first think about the best move, and then realize they will do the opposite.

I have to see more than just a stretch of this. There is a much longer stretch of Fields being a well below replacement passer.

Like I said in another thread, getting excited about a stretch where a QB posts a 1:1 TD to TO ratio shows just how bad Fields has been. It's hard for a team to be consistently competitive with a QB who turns the ball over every single game, doesn't produce a ton of passing yards, and doesn't produce a lot of TDs.

If you put a better QB on the Bears right now, they might be a playoff team. But it's a gamble that Williams/Maye will better as well.

The coaching staff has really see something special in one of these guys to develop to make the move off Fields

Wasn't Jalen Hurst considered an inaccurate passer who could run? I think Fields is a better passer than Hurst. Hurst has been given loads of weapons and has made the most of it. I don't see any reason Fields can't be the same with a WR corps of Moore, Harrison, Kmet, and Claypool. Add some OL pieces and the Bears should be challenging the Lions the next few years for the division.

Talk on the street is the Bears will trade the first pick and go with Fields unless the Green Bay game changes their mind. They will get a huge return. I think it’s better than even money the first 3 picks go QB. If they do the Cards will still face a tough decision. I favor taking Harrison. They will not get a windfall if they trade down.

This was always the obvious choice. Fields has vastly improved and the haul on offer is too great.

And they can pick a QB at #1, trade Fields, add a key piece with their 2nd first-round top 10 pick (Nabers, Odunze ?), etc., etc. and have QB financial certainty for five seasons.

I know what I'd do.

If Williams wasn't available then the Bears decision would be easy just like last year.

Passing on Williams would be something like passing on Patrick Mahomes for Mitchell Trubisky IMO.

Mahomes and Trubisky were in the same draft class. That was just bad evaluation, IMO.

Passing on Williams for Fields could be like passing on Mahomes to take Jamal Adams when you got Josh McCown.

Claypool is no longer on the team.

That's why I put in two options.

It's not at all a weird thought to see the Bears move back one or two spots and still get him. I don't know if conceptually

What I don't see the Bears doing is moving behind us to another team. So the hope (for me at least, who wants MHJ desperately), is that they stick in place and take a QB.

There is still a decent chance the Patriots beat the Jets Sunday and we move up to #3.

That should improve the chances of getting MHJ if Monti doesn't blow it.
I feel like everyone is discounting a Cards win in the finale against Seattle, which I think is a real possibility.
