I just thought Sorkin was mailing it in. The characters all sounded pretty much exactly the same. Same rhythm while they talked, literally lines and conversations lifted straight from West Wing with some tweaks. Just never bought it.

Wow, do I disagree. I read some criticism now and again that it ended at a difficult spot. Well, it ended at the Pax Romana, so not so weird a place to end it. And it didn't at all feel rushed to me. Could it have done great with more seasons? Sure. But like Chap said, HBO was bleeding money. No matter how great a show is, it won't go on if it doesn't make money.

The rule of thumb for me when trying to convince people to watch deadwood is to watch through episode 4.

I say episode 4 because IMO it's the biggest mid-season (or even early season) cliffhanger I've ever seen.
