lol we are not trading for Jimmy G. we already managed to get a good deal from the Pats, it won't happen again.
Thats called a business decision. Rather make 2M as a Cardinal than 0M as a free agent.
Good for him for signing it, and good for the Cards for making this happen. That contract we gave him was abominable. He's not a corner, hes a pure special teamer.
I have a different take.
Call me still pissed about Jefferson, but the organization was not at all proactive with him. He was showing signs of being a good player in 2015, and instead of signing him to something like 3 years for $12M, we lowballed him. That's showing a lack of foresight.
I have a different take.
1. I'm good with this move if we have something else planned, and need the cap space. Right now, we have over $20M in cap space. What we may be planning is extending Bucannon. We also have the little issue of David Johnson AND Golden coming up next year. If those are the big plans, Bethel's $2M savings THIS year doesn't do much.
2. If we don't do anything with that space, and Bethel has a great year, I don't like it. Cooper just signed for $5M. Marcus Cooper! Jefferson for $9M. Campbell $15M. Bethel played better late in the year when he got healthier. If he steps up at CB, we just let an ascending player out of a potentially good contract. I understand that right now, this contract is more in line with what he has produced, but if he steps up, we will regret it. And if we don't do something with the cap space, who cares if we just saved $2M. It won't matter.

There's a 29 year old QB up in Detroit making $22m on the last year of his deal.
with Fitz and palmer falling off of the books next year, we should be able to extend johnson and golden without issue. They along with pp21 are the future of this franchise IMO
Let him leave, are you kidding? If Fitz retires after this season, he'll still be $4.85M in dead money in 2018. If Carson Palmer retires after 2017, he'll put $6.625M in dead money in 2018.
This is gonna be a hot take, but I think you let David Johnson play out his contract and then franchise him for a season. He had 370 touches this season, which is real close to the limit. It's savage, but I think you run David Johnson's legs off and then let him leave.
yes but compared to the cap hit for those two this year, it is peanuts next year. We are going to have a TON of room next year if they both retire. If Fitz retires after this season, he'll still be $4.85M in dead money in 2018. Personally, DJ has the potential to be the next AP. No way in hell do I do that and go back into the years and years of mediocrity at that position. I say give him a big extension next year, ride him out for 4-5 years, then do as you said.
Seems asinine when he could possibly have a career like an Emmitt or Curtis Martin, Eddie George, Ladainian etc.... just because you've ran him hard for 4 seasons doesn't mean he isn't good for four more... The kid is special and you of all people have griped about letting talent walk... He may be the most talented we've ever seen on this team...
