I can't believe this thread hasnt gotten more traction. Taking the cue from last season I want the suns to crack the top ten again.... Meaning two picks in the top ten. I want Jackson and a PG... Hopefully Dennis Smith because he might be there at 7 and is attainable. I don't know if we can get higher than 7 if we trade Bled and pick(s).

Is Bledsoe+Miami pick+second rounders... Could that crack the top 7? Part of me doesn't think it can....

Ugh. Seems like a lot to me to acquire the #7 pick.

Bledsoe changed a lot of opinions this year by growing into a leader while putting up All Star like numbers. I'm worried he'll miss the majority of next year with injuries and another season slashed in half because of knee issues will kill his value. I like Bledsoe, that's why I'd like to see him go to a playoff team and allow us to head into training camp with a rookie and Ulis vying for the starting spot. I'd like to see how Ulis steps up knowing he could be our PG of the future.

Does it seem like too much? I don't know what Bleds actual value is compared to a top 10 pick because of stuff like contracts. He's playing great ball and is a proven commodity and is in prime. But he only has two years left on his contract. When a player gets drafted they are on a rookie contract for a few years then are locked in even more years after that. I think that adds quite a bit of value to a player because teams have time to build on that.

Yes, but teams also have to wait for that player to develop, if they ever do develop. It's not a sure thing. Eric Bledsoe is a guaranteed, 27 year old, all-star level player on a good contract.

That's all true. But when does a contract become a short term rental?

You're treating 2 years like its 1. Most NBA contracts are 4 years, the longest they can be is 5. A guy getting moved on a 2 year deal does not diminish his value at all.

But we're comparing Bledsoe's two years remaining to a rookie deal with a teams right to match the first contract. Arnt we talking like seven or eight years that a team drafting a player has rights on him?

Example...Len is on his fourth season. We have a right to match any offer. An offer would be at least four years.. correct? That makes eight years of control over a player. Thats six years longer than Bledsoe's two remaining seasons.

Then we have to consider rookie deals are peanuts in salary compared to regular contracts. Bledsoe is on a reasonable contract but it's nowhere near a rookie deal. That's why I think it's hard to crack the top ten on Bledsoe alone... maybe though but I doubt it.

That Miami pick should not be treated like a throw-in. It's only top 7-protected, and if it falls in the top 7 it becomes unprotected the next year. There is a chance that pick could be more valuable than the 7th pick by itself. I see the point in trading it as part of a package for an established player (given our abundance of young talent), but trading it AND Bledsoe for the seventh pick seems like a fairly dramatic overpay.

If Miami replicated this season next year (which, despite a historically strong finish, I think is certainly possible) then that's the 14th pick in the draft. Bledsoe has to be worth more than going from late lottery to mid lottery.

I get that but we have two Miami picks...The other one is 2019 or 2021?? I agree though that the Miami picks have substantial value although one is probably worth more than the other.

You're too heavily discounting the fact that most draft picks will not make it. The draft is a dice throw, especially when you get into picks later than the top 5.

I think this draft is different because it's deeper. But yeah there is an unavoidable gamble element to the draft. Just like there is a gamble element to whether Bledsoe will re-sign with the suns or will his knees hold out for another contract.

Yes. The 2021 is unprotected, so I would especially hate to trade that one. With the Suns luck, they treat that as a throw-in and lose a generational player.

The trade that comes to mind is when the Clippers gave up an unprotected 1st in order to dump Baron Davis' contract. That pick ended up becoming Kyrie Irving.

We need to stop thinking about fixing everything in one year or this up and coming off-season.

I look at Bled as like KJ a great player that had to deal with bad teams, but those bad teams ended up building assets that where trade able or developed enough to change the franchise. Also with what Ullis has done at the end of this year, I might be more interested to focus on him as the PG of the future.

The teams focus should in this order: moving Knight for something of value, drafting the BPA with #1 pick, Adjusting roster for #1 pick, finding a proven outside defender in free agency and long term plan for Center.

The Sun's still have a bunch of future assets and moveable pieces. But I can't think of a young proven player that I would try to get or that would be available?

I don't know about "bad teams" for KJ. He joined the team in the 87-88 season, mid-season I believe, when the team wasn't good, but the next year - his first full season - the team won 50+ games from then on.

wha? KJ didn't have to deal with bad teams. The second he became the starter in 1988-89 season, they won 55 games and got to the WCF and then did the same the next year and then won 50 games the next three years until they got Barkley.

Ya know... what if Bledsoe got an early extension from the Suns? Is there a way to tack on another three years to his contract? I know some of us are concerned he might break down but I'd be willing to extend him just to save him as an asset and have more time to build. Then I'd be less inclined to draft a PG especially since Ulis could step in at some point. Then if we lucked out and got Jackson we'd be set for real.

I agree with you, why the hell would anybody think a team in the 7 range would give up that pick for bledsoe, when they could draft a top pg prospect, such as a fox or dennis smith. You would have to include the Miami pick(s), maybe even a protected suns pick to go with Bledsoe to MAYBE get as high as seven.

Maybe bledsoe to Dallas at 9 or 10 is possible, since they refuse to rebuild. Wish bridges was in the draft, would love to get him at 9 or 10, not sure I love anything else there.

I was starting to think I was off base but you see it exactly the way I do. A team could just lock in a PG pick for a bunch of years and be on a cheap rookie contract to boot.

I think it could be difficult to crack the top 7 in this draft but it's doable I think for the right price

I want to clarify the Miami picks if nothing else for my own benefit.

The Miami first round pick in 2018 is protected 1-7. If it does not convey, then the 2019 pick is unprotected.

The 2021 Miami first round pick is unprotected.

Does anyone disagree?

The way the Heat's roster in constructed those picks won't be anything special. Riley isn't rebuilding until those picks are conveyed.

That said they're still nice to have. Imagine having the 14th pick which is where their pick is this year. For Dragic who demanded a trade I think the Suns got pretty good value given the circumstances.

I think they are great trade pieces though. I would not be afraid to trade them in the right circumstances

Only way I trade them is in a multi-piece trade for a young superstar. Bledsoe, warren and the unprotected 1st for some proven but young stud. Can't even think about who that might be. Maybe if we draft Ball it's Bledsoe, warren, Bender and unprotected Miami 1st and our protected pick for Anthony Davis kind of deal. Like a Barkley for horny, perry, and Lang sort of deal.

Look at the Lakers' pick this year. How awesome would it be to still have that pick with better than 50% chance of acquiring it in an awesome draft. Next year it's unprotected. You never know. I don't like trading picks.

There is a time to trade picks. Its when your core is in place or you are able to get that one piece to finish your core. Its a horrible thing to do at the beginning of a rebuilding process.

McD seems to draft well, so I am just fine keeping picks and sticking with what we do best. Remember that he drafts well when he just focuses on the BPA and lets the draft come to him. I don't think drafting Booker was all that brilliant. He just took the best player left on the board at the time. GM's blow it when they try to draft that hidden talent that no one else seems to recognize. So kudos to McD. But how do we add 5 first round picks to this roster over the next 3 years. Everyone is young already.

At some point, there are just too many young players around. You don't have the minutes to develop them.
