TJ - i'm a marlins fan and emilio has been far from lights out - although he is providing some hope over this past week

he still has serious issues with the high fastball, serious issues with plate discipline, strikeouts, etc

He was lights out before his little slump, but has picked up a bit. He is on a seven game hitting streak I believe.

His last 7 games he has 5 hits in 24 ABs for a .208 avg.

Baseball is a wacky sport. If he slumps like that and still has a .269 average, then he must have some talent.

This is a statement that probably sounded good in your head, but doesn't actually mean anything. All ballplayers that make the MLB have "talent". That's a nebulous and relative term.

What we do know is that he hasn't had enough ABs to know if he can be productive and contribute to a ML ball club. Your comment falls into the category of small sample size. What might help is if he quits trying to hit LH.

Our guys maintain slumps like that for the entire season, have a bit of a hot streak and end up with a .228 AVG. D-Backs would covet something like Bonafacio right now.

All of our guys? Some of our guys? Got examples?

I just don't understand how one can defend D-Backs management at this point. I'm as loyal of a fan as they come, but D-Back John is just being ridiculous.

It wasn't about defending the management, it was about calling out your incorrect assertion. Which seem to be still incorrect despite further attempts to defend it.

If you go back and read what he said, he said that he was hitting below the Mendoza line for the last month. If you recall his first couple weeks of the season he was hitting over .350. But over the last 30 days, he is hitting under .200 with an OPS of .464, not quite "lights out".

Actual everyday players that bat below the Mendoza line are hard to find.

Unless your talking about the Diamondbacks.

That's a career year for Chris Young

I know, I'd be thrilled with CY hitting .269 over a season. With the power skill he has displayed that might make for a productive hitter.

Bonifacio has a lower BB/AB rate and an almost the same SO/AB rate as CY, with nothing even close to the power. Bonifacio's .269 avg wouldn't be close to the same value of CY's .269 avg.

he's also been one of the worst regular 3rd basemen in the league

however, when he gets on base he creates havoc

he hit safely tonight, stole 2nd and then scored from 2nd when zimmeran threw the ball away on a play at first

then H2R just snagged a base

A .298 OBP is atrocious for a "true leadoff hitter" no matter how many steals he has.

Would make a great pinch-runner though!

Phillies, Mets, Braves, Nationals, Marlins > Dodgers, Giants, Rockies, Fathers, Ebacks.

That's debatable Mulli... look at their respective records...

The NL East is a combined 172 & 203
The NL West is a combined 193 & 186

But the fact that you're a jerk is most certainly not! :p

C'mon, you agree!
Yeah but look:

Take out the first place team and the last place team (because I said so). East is better, and the Phills won the Series last year. ;)

With the trade of Nick Johnson to the Marlins, Jorge Cantu will move to third base leaving Bonafacio without a consistent starting position.

Marlins acquired first baseman Nick Johnson from the Nationals for LHP Aaron Thompson.

A big pickup for Florida. They'll lose some range defensively by shifting Jorge Cantu back to third base, but Johnson will be an upgrade with the glove at first base and he'll add a healthy dose of OBP at the top of the order if Fredi Gonzalez is willing to bat him second. Emilio Bonifacio will likely start in left field against left-handers and serve as a defensive replacement at third. The Nats will probably shift Adam Dunn to first base and give Elijah Dukes another opportunity in the outfield. If they want Dukes to stay in Triple-A for a little while longer, then Mike Morse would seem to be in line for a callup.

Five hits tonight. Leading the league in hitting in the second month of the season.
