Extraordinary circumstances. For every 1 starting 4th round rookie you tell me was a success, I can point to 5 that weren't. For a team with Super Bowl aspirations, I don't think they should be coming out and saying "our plan is to just roll with a guy who has never taken an NFL snap and was passed on three times over by everyone in the league."

Noone said "hand anything to anyone". I expect competition. I just want guys to have the opportunity. Dont stuff Dorian off on the 4th string and never let him even try to take the starting job. If Dorian wins outright, then hes the guy.

Whereas I do feel Boehm has been handed the job.

Boehm earned it last season when he stepped in and played very well at the position. He proved he is the best guy on the roster at RG.

That was 2016. He didnt beat Mathis. Mathis got injured. Just because he played OK last year doesnt mean he should be handed the job without competition.

He should go heads up with all other RG candidates on the roster, notably Dorian.

As the veteran, Boehm should handily win. If he loses, then the new guy is an upgrade.

Competition is always a win/win.

There is competition, its just his job to lose. This has already been communicated by coach, he is not being handed the job.

Boehm’s confidence had to shoot up on the day the Cardinals first reported to camp when Arians was asked specifically about the depth chart at right guard.

“I just know 1. And 1 is Evan,” Arians said. “We’ll see who the hell No. 2 and 3 are.”

There are a handful of others in competition with Boehm for the starting spot between center A.Q. Shipley and right tackle Jared Veldheer, who spent each of his previous seven NFL seasons as a left tackle. So far in camp, the three primary backups behind Boehm have been Cole Toner, John Wetzel and rookie Dorian Johnson.

Toner, though, is being groomed as a swing tackle who can dabble at guard and center. Wetzel, a former practice-squad player for the Raiders, Cowboys and Colts, is now being looked at mostly as a backup right tackle. That leaves Johnson, a fourth-round pick out of Pittsburgh where he was a four-year starter whom Cardinals insiders had pegged as Boehm’s biggest threat.

“We’ll get Dorian as many reps as we possibly can,” Arians said, “but no, it’s Evan’s job. Those last spots, we’ll wait and see.”

Mathis was injured at the beginning of the season. Boehm didn't play OK at the end of the year when he stepped in, he played well.

Comparing apples to oranges here fellas. Dorian was a great addition as where he was picked along with Boehm.

You would stand a better chance finding an o lineman in the fourth round than a qb.

He's a great addition, and I like the pick - but not enough to ignore available veterans that could help us in an all or nothing kind of year. I bet he'll eventually compete for that role.

The opportunity is out there - it's just Boehm's job to lose. If we switched Boehm to C over AQ Shipley though, we'd be handing the job to Dorian Johnson, which is what was proposed.

well no, I would want Dorian to have competition :)

I just dont see a reason to bring in Mangold unless you are going to cut him or shipley by the end of camp.

He was bad for the Chargers last season. Injuries really robbed him of his quickness and athleticism. Fact that he's so short doesn't help him either.

If I recall... Dorian was only there in the fourth due to a genetic liver disease...or something like that... but was graded out as a second round talent.

bringing mangold in for a look could also be a motivational tactic...we have talent at the position already

Reading between the lines - Other than #2 CB, I wouldn't expect us to add any starters. BA referred to bringing in veteran FA's "just in case." Sounds like he wants to add veteran depth to the bottom of our roster in case of injuries.
