Jeff, you must have seen some good stuff with the Jets last year. Just based on the metrics looked "awfully good"
Actually, I managed to avoid watching the Jets (who are emerging as the modern-day obnoxious East Coast version of America's Team).

That said - I tend to be a forgiving sort when it comes to past "indiscretions" (I mean, neither Bobby Layne or Joe Willie were exactly choir boys).

But sometimes it's difficult to ignore an imminent train wreck.

Forget issues of "character", "role model" etc. etc.

By risking a $5-million dollars/year contract - because he and his "posse" apparently had a score to settle at or near a night club - is kind of stupid, don't you think?

What we don't need is to become reliant on a lights-out WR over the course of the season only to find him in jail (or worse) on the eve of a playoff game. That's the risk you take.

Still want him, and I'd still be willing to give him a contract that matches what he's looking for so long as it's not too much in guaranteed money and is heavily incentivized.

The fact that he hasn't been signed yet means he is going to get far less than the $5 mil/year everyone is up in arms about.

This recent "brush with the law" will hurt his value, but it does not mean we should stay away from the guy. He is still a productive player on the field and will take pressure off of Fitz.

I read a report this morning that we are still talking with his agent (accuracy of statement is questionable, but whatever). If we don't sign him, we need to hope that either Roberts takes the next step to becoming a good complimentary receiver or Doucet can play more than 9 games in a season. I have little faith in Stuckey as more than a #4 on this team.

In addition, I want to see how Williams is progressing and if our old rookie Sampson is worth anything more than the jersey he was issued in camp.

If we do not sign Edwards, it's not the end of the world, but it would only help this team. 1 0r 2 year contract will suffice.

it is not completely unheard of for contracts to have provisions regarding off the field behavior. Dude may keep his nose clean if he knows it will cost him his job.

This particular event, he did not extract himself, but he was not directly involved either....at least according to what has been reported. IMO the young man needs a mentor, someone who will explain to him what it is going to cost to keep kicking it with these same fools. I am sure many of us have had friends we had to let go along the way because they were not good for our future.....I know I have anyway.

Since my most recent post on this thread, I spent the better part of the last hour surfing for more news about the Edwards "incident."

Nada.

Makes me wonder whether the original story was bogus.

Anyone have solid info (from good sources)?

It just seems to me that, if the story were true, it would be flooding the NFL airways (& it's not).

What about Derek Mason?

Maybe an option. He has at most one year still in the tank so we would have to know that Roberts, Early, Williams and Sampson are not going to take the next step this year.

It seems Edwards was connected with a fight very recently and it made me wonder. How many players in the past before the whole media access of the modern age got into these altercations on a daily bases and no one ever mentioned it till you hear stories on NFL films by old guys joking about it. I'm not saying that players should and I do not approve of it. Does anyone have stories from players of the past they know of that would make some of these modern players look like saints in comparison?

Back in the Paleolithic Era I knew more than a few professional baseball and football players. (No, I was not a groupie so wipe that picture out of your collective data bases.) Some of them certainly knew how to party and more than a few were hard drinkers. But none of them had "entourages". I think those came with the massive signing bonuses and salaries. They tended to hang with each other, not the guys from back home and the hanger-oners.

I've seen a few high and drunk players (usually after a win) but never this thing with going to clubs with your entourage and getting so blasted knives come out. There were always clubs and restaurants (sometimes owned by fellow players) where they hung out and felt safe. They wanted a good meal and maybe a couple of drinks. I'm sure they didn't mind the women fawning over them.

Which reminds me, I've been meaning to send a letter to whoever owns the house Marshall Faulk used to live in off La Palma Ave. Nice little plaque out front would be in order I think. Raise the asking price a few bucks, maybe. :)

(Now that I'm thinking of it the Lakers, in their prime, definitely knew how to party. I used to hear stories about them getting pretty wild.)

This guy is bad news. The potential distraction this year is not worth the benefit he would bring to the team.

True. There used to be a run down little honky tonk type bar outside the Oakland coliseum where the players always would hang out together...(I know, honky tonk and Oakland dont go together)....there were rarely any issues there...an occasional fight, but no weapons or anything like that...and never with the bar staff...usually with each other, and on occasion, a loud mouthed fan that did not know when to shut up..... I just dont get these youngsters these days.

Kent Somers just tweeted a short while ago that they are still negotiating with Edwards.

Vikings AND Titans apparently out of the Edwards sweepstakes...

This is the time for the Cards to step up.. I thought it was interesting, yesterday on JRIB Whiz said the brush with law enforcement will have no impact on the cards interest in Edwards...

I think he is worth a 2 year deal witht he second year being a team option... get it done!

Man, I agree. Edwards would take our offense up another level and virtually guarantees the Fitz signs an extension.

Sign him!

Watch out downtown Scottsdale if signed.

Still hope we sign him. But yeah, pretty fricking stupid. Hopefully he leaves those knuckleheads there. Probably not though.

The cards should tell him we're not paying you enough to have hanger-ons.

What do you mean by that? Isn't every year of every deal a team option? Teams can cut players at any time.

If you mean that there should be no cap impact to the Cardinals from cutting him, he would have to get no signing bonus. Perhaps warranted; unlikely he'd agree to it, but possible under the circumstances if he's out of options. But i'd think with no signing bonus he'd insist on a one-year deal - why commit to the team for a second year otherwise? Even despite his legal problems, i don't think his bargaining position is THAT weak.
