I just can't believe a "seasoned" GM who people here have compared to Ainge gave that pick up... unprotected... to a team with NO GM. And people can talk about how the Heat will be good in three years... but they seem to be the same people who slammed those who were pissed about losing the Lakers pick, using the same rationale.

And guess what player got taken at that Lakers pick we originally owned... BRIDGES! I mean... to not get ANY protection on that pick is a little mind-boggling to me. Just always seems like we deal from a position not just of weakness but desperation. Much like we probably will now with Warren, when it's become incredibly apparent that there's no room for him on this team. Much like we needed to when we had to deal Dragic. And when we needed to deal Bledsoe.

I hope Bridges is worth it, but considering everyone here was talking about that pick being off-limits just 28 hours ago unless it got us a top 4 pick, he's gonna have to be really, really damn good. And the continued trades of McD leave me to believe that while this team will get better, they won't truly challenge for a title until someone with a little better foresight is calling the shots.

Gotta love ya Cheese, three months ago you said the Suns had no assets except the high picks we have for being bad. Now that Miami pick is the Holy Grail?

so, in other words, our GM got taken by a bunch of guys who have never been GM before. No GM or a bunch of guys who might be named GM but have no experience is the same difference to me.

I'm not in love with this trade but I don't have a strong feel for what Mikal will become. If Legler and whoever else said it was correct and Bridges really is the next Scottie Pippen, I'd say it was our GM that ripped off the inexperienced Philly group. And if he's just a decent player that benefitted from playing in the right program, we need a change in scouting or management (or both). But chances are, Mikal will be somewhere between star and marginal player and we'll be debating the merits of this trade for a long time.

Half those guys were nowhere near ready right out of high school. That kind of logic is just insane
The idea of judging other peoples' motives just really grates on me. It presumes you know what he is thinking, and also assumes the worst about what he is thinking. Isn't winning now a priority for the entire team, not just McD?
long term assets require long term thinking. If every team was always in win now at all costs they would always trade away future picks at pennies on the dollar.

And i fully admit what i said was conjecture. I lead with “I think.” And I’ll stand steadfastly behind my comment that McD sold extremely low on an UNprotected (how often do we even see those traded anymore???) pick to move up 6 spaces.

Maybe the problem here is that we value Bridges differently. I think Bridges could end up being better than Doncic. I think Doncic is more likely o be better but still, Bridges does not have the holes in his game that Doncic does. I thought this before the draft. I just never considered Bridges one of our targets. I assumed it would be Young or Doncic, or maybe another big. That is because I was just not really considering any player with SF in front of his name. I knew that Mikal was versatile enough to play multiple positions, but I am so locked into a traditional position mindset, I did not see need/value.
Oh man the homerism is starting to rage in regards to bridges. “Does not have the holes in his game . . . “ no he doesn’t have doncic’s holes, he has other ones. The opposite of doncic’s. I’m excited to add bridges to our team but let’s try to be objective and honest about his game. He lacks in shot creation and isn’t considered a great passer. I love that for months everyone argues that Doncic is not a pg but a wing. But the second we take bridges everyone wants to say Doncic is a oh so they can crow we got the best wing.

I don’t think you have to believe Mikal is a marginal player to think McD got outfoxed in that deal.

If Philly “had” a GM, Colangelo might have been fixated on Bridges—or someone else—and the trade might not have happened at all.

It was a simple trade. Phoenix wanted Bridges and had been expressing interest. Philly knew what the Suns assets were. Given Philly’s immediate goals,
if I’m them I don’t want anyone on the actual Phoenix roster that the Suns are willing to trade, or a package or later picks.

If I’m the Suns I don’t want to give up any of my own future firsts, as their value is inversely proportional to our own results. I’d rather trade the picks whose destiny isn’t tied to my own.

So it’s either Milwaukee’s or Miami’s. If I’m Phoenix I prefer to trade the former; if I’m Philly I prefer the latter.

Debating whether the pick is worth upgrading from Donte to Bridges is totally valid. But Philly doesn’t care about the origins of these picks. It may be “like” we traded Dragic for Knight, for instance, but that’s immaterial to Philly.

Now we’ll see what happens with the Bucks pick. It’ll probably get traded. But who knows, maybe Giannis wants out and gets moved before the pick has conveyed. They end up in the top half of the lottery and retain the pick for 2020, and then the following year it conveys unprotected.

Again. The presser. McD talked about how they valued the Miami pick and what factors went into that. Here is what he said.

1. It's 2021 and our need was present.
2. Miami is one of the best run franchises top to bottom in the league and has only had a few losing seasons since they came into the league.
3. Miami has one of the best young coaches in the league and he will probably be there for a long time.
4. Miami is a destination city for free agents.

It could end up being a very good pick, but the odds are against it. Again. I am not arguing here. This is what McD said.

We could have put protections on that pick, but it was not our pick, so it's difficult. When you protect a pick, there has to be an alternative. The alternative has to be another pick, but our pick that year would hardly be in the same category. I doubt the Sixers would go for our pick as an alternative because it will not be a good one. Expectations of our own success work against us. Yeah, I hate giving up a future unprotected first, but I want Mikal more.

So maybe the Suns fleeced the 76ers in the trade because they couldn't make up their mind and pushed the decision down the road with the trade.

I am now hoping Miami turns it around really quickly so we can avoid spending the next three years in hand-wringing and second-guessing.

That said, I'M STOKED FOR NEXT YEAR!

Geez... you and your bro’s disdain for McD couldn’t be more clear!
Put your hate aside dude and just accept the FACT that the McD secured the two guys he coveted most, Ayton and Bridges. In order to get Bridges, he needed to burn the Miami 2021 pick... We have NO idea where that pick will fall. Let it go! We’ll have the Bucks pick on 2021. How many damn picks do want to keep stashing away? If we keep hoarding picks, doesn’t that suggest we aren’t winning/being successful??
LET IT GO!!!

Yeah, that could help soften the blow if this backfires. But for me, I really don't have a problem with using that pick for the right prospect. My appreciation or dislike of this deal will revolve around what kind of a player Mikal really is.

Now I'm pushing for the Heat to retool quickly. They need to attract a star.

in my mind, the wisdom of both the Ayton and Bridges pick today is the only aspect to ever judge
and today, my only regret is that Cubin shark-tanked the 2nd prize

also, that he went so early softens the blow of missing out on Trae Young
but i'm glad he's in the East

I agree. If the Suns had to miss out on Young or Doncic I'm glad they went early.

The thing that could make the deal seem sour is if Donte ends up a better player than Mikal. But Mikal has 3 inches of height and 7 inches of wingspan on Donte.

IMO Mikal is already better then Marion was. And when he is 26 he will be Kawhi. No one will be talking about that pick but Philly fans.

Nothing like a little optimism. I like Mikal, but I am not getting my hopes THAT high.

At his peak, Marion was a reliable 20-10 guy with 3 point range who also guarded the best player on the opposing team. Mikal has shown exactly nothing on the NBA stage.

Doncic and Smith Jr will be an odd pairing. Young is going to have to carry ATL unless Collins can continue his development into a solid secondary piece. Huerter & Spellman were nice pick ups for ATL as well. I like our team better with Ayton & Bridges, two super athletic specimens with skills that are suited for today's NBA.

He just needs to be a sharp-shooting Robert Covington.

I really like Bridges, but this is absurd. He might get there one day, I think it's a real possibility. But Marion was a monster, statistically a borderline hall of fame player and IMO his impact was larger than his stats.

not to mention a 4 time all-star, 2 two ALL-NBA 3rd Team guy at his peak. Look, I was definitely not the president of the Marion fan club, but to say Bridges is already better than him just doesn't jive with reality.

If Bridges was already better than that, he would have gone with the second pick.

I know people are going to twist everything I say at this point. Already seen it happen a couple times. It's not that I don't like Bridges. I think he will be a FANTASTIC role player. It's why I thought he fit in perfectly with the Sixers. But for him to be 21 already and still have weak handles/passing ability makes me question if he's going to be dynamic and more than just a really good 3 and D guy.

And if you're giving up a pick in this draft and an unprotected pick in what's now looked at as potentially a DOUBLE LOADED draft because of the 1 and done rule, I think we should have gotten a dynamic prospect or walked away.

Lots of you are saying we are in "win now" mode. But so are the Sixers and Celtics and you don't see them giving away their picks to move up 6 slots in a draft. They keep those picks for the home-run ball (like Kyrie or Leonard) which is what McD (and ALL OF YOU) kept saying about those assets. I think we hit a solid double with Bridges, but remains to be seen if he touches all the bases.

If he does, great trade. If not, well... it wouldn't surprise me.

Oh we all get what you are saying. It comes down to how each person sees risk. I even think we all agree on the cost and the potentials of the trade. That Miami pick is a lottery ticket. The fear of missing out on hitting big, even if the odds are small, is a signficant fear for some. For others, the low odds of hitting it big make taking a sure thing now a much better choice. Some of us are gamblers and some are not. The really funny thing is that each group accuses the other of being the gamblers.

It is choice that can tip either way, which means it was probably a pretty even trade.
