That’s a good point as well. Taken together I think it explains his recent defense success pretty well.
The fact that Ayton is a 20 year old, one year of college rookie Center can't be dismissed in all of this. IMHO, in light of this alone, I find it extremely, immensely encouraging that he is being as productive as he is and is now finding his stride on defense.
I think playing defense as a Center is more difficult than it is for a guard... The Center has a lot more going on in and around the paint and the basket, versus a guard that mainly defends on the perimeter only. And nowadays, with more bigs stretching out beyond the paint, playing defense as a Center is all the more complex.
I could be wrong, but I think it would be hard to find many examples of any rookie who had a mere one year in college, who entered the league and was a standout defensively. Even harder to locate a center who did this.
I think it's impossible not to get excited when you think about what Ayton will be in 3-4 years. With more experience, more conditioning, more muscle... he's gonna be incredibly difficult to handle on both ends of the court. And as he showed last night, he kinda already is!
