Don't praise MO for making this basic move.

I 1000% guarantee you Steve "prime time" Keim would have also shored up BB's contract and would have kept BB's status from being an issue for all of the season.

Good-time-Stevie was a master at managing player's contracts!

It may have been part of the negotiation. Cards got Budda to buy in for 1 more year, knowing they'd let him be a FA next year.
If that’s the case, why not just trade him to another team and actually get something of value as opposed to letting another talented guy walk in for absolutely nothing?

He would have given Budda a 5 year extension with 90% of the money deferred for another 5 years after that, continuing to hamstring the team's salary cap.

I merged the two threads because it is already being talked about here. There is also more info on the contract in the " budda gets paid " thread

$3.75 dead money in 2024

If the plan truly is to release him next year, why would they not just accelerate all this to this year’s cap instead of contiuining to create dead money for next year?

You can't accelerate money that's already been paid. The $3.775 million if/when he's released next year is what's already been paid on his before-today deal. Maybe that number goes up a little, but it won't be a ton.

Even less if they stretch it.

Not the Cardinals way it seems.

Great job by MO to create incentives based on actually being available. It’s a new era in Cardinal football. It may take a couple years to reap benefits from a W/L perspective, but you have to start somewhere when you’re trying to establish a sustainable culture.

Why would they release him next year? Because of his salary? Why not extend him next year? He'll be 28 in 2024. I would like to extend him for a couple of more years. Like JG said he plays the game the way it should be played.
Maybe if Simmons shows some ability at S, you'll keep him instead with the money already invested in Thompson at S?

Hopefully if that is the case, they trade him and not release him. He doesn't seem the type to sit out as he is at camp now. If he stays healthy and produces, we should get good value in return.

Simmons will be a free agent after this season.
Yeah - we'll play him out of position until his last season, then he'll have a breakout year and sign elsewhere. The Cardinal way?

What I was expressing was that theoretically, since we've invested in Thompson as well, the Cards might make a decision between paying Budda again as one of the highest paid players at his position, perhaps you instead pay Simmons. (assuming he can actually play at S)

You would think they could get away with paying Simmons half of what they pay Budda if he performs enough to earn a 2nd contract.
