Patrick Willis said if the Arizona Cardinals are going to capture the NFC West crown Monday night, they will have to do so through the air.
The ground is closed.
"We're not worried about the run,'' the 49ers linebacker said. "We know that they're not going to run the ball on us. They will not run the ball on us."
Such a proclamation might come as a surprise to the Cardinals, who come into the game at Candlestick Park averaging 135.0 rushing yards over their past five games.
Like the 49ers, they've been aiming for a more balanced offense. Arizona rolled out 113 yards on the ground last week against Minnesota's third-ranked rushing defense.
"I think anybody would tell you that if you're too one-dimensional in this league, it's hard to be successful,'' Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "We're not by any stretch of the imagination the greatest running football team in the league, but for a long time we were the worst team. We could only move it by throwing the football."
Tim Hightower has averaged 6.9 yards per attempt over his past three games. Beanie Wells ranks third among rookie rushers with 517 yards.
Bring it on, Willis said.
"We're not worried about that,'' he said. "But we will have to stop the pass."
The 49ers rank fifth in the NFL in rushing defense and 27th against the pass.
