He's my brother. These were dudes we jawed with for four hours at the previous game. It was ballsy, but they took it well. He could have well gotten into a fight and I told him that it wasn't smart afterwards. But it was still awesome. You're a jag just because this is the internet and I want to call you names. Great job buddy! Hope the rest of your life is as fun as you are on here . . . yeesh.

not sure how you managed to turn this around on me but whatever. Im sorry but if you asked 100 hundred different people, they would say your bro is a d-bag. Doesnt matter if you were jawing at them before or after or during. You tear up someones sign at a game you are asking to be called a jerk. Please feel free to further turn this around on me or make excuses.

Sorry if i seem to be going after you, but "people" like your brother infuriate me. Its a sporting event where we are all supposed to have fun and cheer loud, not use it as an excuse to be a nimrod.

Here is the 12th man history. They did steal the idea for Texas A&M.

On the Seahawks.com page devoted to fans, there’s one snippet about history:

The Seattle fans had such an impact on the success of the team in the 1980’s that Seahawks President Mike McCormack retired the number 12 jersey on December 15, 1984 forever. A tribute to the best fans in the NFL.

So now we have a date. But that does nothing to disprove the thought-theft claims.

How about Wikipedia’s 12th Man entry?

The Seattle Seahawks continue to use the phrase, having settled with Texas A&M out of court after a trademark lawsuit filed by Texas A&M… The Seattle Seahawks retired the number 12 jersey on December 15, 1984, in honor of their fans.

Wikipedia tells us nothing more, and indeed it references Seahawks.com as its source for the second sentence. The first nicely frames the entire argument of the haters: Seattle infringed on the Aggies’ trademark, ergo Seattle stole the idea.

After several other documented instances of the use of “12th Man”, Texas A&M had a roster shortage in 1922 and pulled a player out of the stands to sit on the bench. Luckily they didn’t have to worry about NCAA eligibility back then. (Hilariously, the first sentence about Texas A&M is followed by “citation needed”.) So Texas A&M have a legit, 90-some year claim on the continuous use of the term. Even if they didn’t file for a trademark until 1990. Luckily we can avoid the whole topic of trademark infringement and still look back and consider the genesis of Seattle’s 12th Man. Was it independent conception or dirty pirate thievery?

The 100 different people around me at Cooperstown started screaming and cheering for me before I got kicked out... and it was well worth it.

If that made me a jerk back then, so be it. But no douchebag Yankee fan was taking a "BRING IN KIM!" poster to my stadium.

that said, Ouchie remembers a lot of the details of that moment wrong... because he wasn't there (this is like your Almost Famous moment again Ouch). That was Game 6. I knew from the second I saw those guys that sign was dust and I would pay whatever consequence for it, happily.

I think you should bring a sign and when cam comes to grab it you smack him silly. He's technically assaulting you if he tries to take your property by force and you're allowed to defend yourself. Of course, you'll likely get pummeled by the rest of the fans.

That said, I have no problem with cam doing this. He's protecting his house. It's like game 7 of the Dbacks Yankees World Series. Cheese and I were walking into the stadium. We saw some obnoxious Yankees fans behind which we sat during game two. Cheese asked to see their sign. They handed it to him. He calmly tore it in half. Everyone (including me) was stunned into inaction. I think he said "have a good time losing" and we walked away. It was FREAKING AWESOME.

Damn, Cheese did that? I would be pissed if someone did that to me, but I would never be carrying in a sign of the opposing team in the first place. I'm just happy to wear the shirt and be fine with that.

in my defense... I was annihilated. We got down to Arizona Center to really have a good time before the game and got there @ 11:30, thinking the game was at 2:30. It started at 6! I pretty much blacked out after the third inning. Wasn't my finest hour to be sure. But the look on those guys' faces when I tore their sign in half and the cheers from the crowd around are still priceless moments.

and again, after what we had just witnessed in game 4 and 5, no Yankee fan was walking into our stadium with a "Bring In Kim!" sign. Not on my drunken watch.

Lol... I was being facetious. I was a complete douchebag and would be stunned if I ever did anything like that again, but it was a hilarious moment in life and I'm still glad I did it!

In this instance, the guy reached over the railing and put the flag directly in cams face. He was totally within his "rights" to grab it and chuck it. Idk how anyone can argue that series of events.

What games are we talking about? How long ago was this?

it was before Game 6 of the 2001 World Series. Remember, Byung-Yung Kim completely blew game 4 and 5, giving up back to back 2 out, 2 run-home-runs to tie up both games in the 9th inning. So, when I saw the Yanks fan with a Bring In Kim sign, I saw red.

We were all young punks back then. I remember being hammered at a few diamondback games and being totally obnoxious. I'll take the time now to apologize to all those sitting around me back then.

Funny thing is I've never been drunk at a football game. Only baseball. Maybe because baseball is so darn boring.

Agreed. Having lived in DC during the cards residence in the NFC East I went to every game wearing my cards jersey. Took a lot of gried (particularly when you think about the fact that I cheered for such a sad sack org back then), but I was always respectful and just cheered. Typically struck up conversations with knowledgable fans around me. The one time I took my girlfriend and put her in a jersey (she was from AZ but knew nothing about sports) she was scared to death.

To be honest, if you were going to get a beat down that game it should have been when you tried to order another beer in the stadium, and it would have come from the folks sitting in front of you that got splattered with vomit prior to attempting to order said beer.

LOL this is an epic story Cheese and Ouchie, thanks for sharing.

We've all done dumb things. The funniest thing I have ever witnessed was in the 99 season when we played the Niners on MNF. (the game where Anaeas ended Youngs career)

There were Niner fans EVERYWHERE for that game. I was one of the 15k other season ticket holders and my dad couldn't go to that game so I took my friend Bryce (who sounds an aweful lot like cheese)

We were walking up to SDS and there was this huge van all decorated with 9er stuff. They were honking and cheering and all that. My friend was pretty buzzed by this time so when that van stops at a light he runs up, jumps up on the little step (you know the steps old vans used to have?) so he sticks his head in the passenger window and yells;

"HEY ARE YOU GUYS ALL 9ER FANS???"

and they all give a hearty YEAHHH!!! Thinking that he was a 9er fan too, lol

To which he replied: "GO $#$% YOURSELVES!"

lol It was so freaking funny, you just had to be there. They didn't even get mad he caught them so badly by surprise they all just laughed like awe, you got us. lol

yup... I never drink at football games either. The adrenaline of a live game is the best drug in the world as far as I'm concerned.

Fully agree Bert and I'm not a fan of Cam's Dap and superman stunts. I'm not a fan of Cam's but I do respect how he gives TD balls to kids in the stands.

Chris Sanders does make a point that Cam has a history of this but in this case the fan that flapped that flag in Cams face got what he had coming to him.

Someone on the sports news sometime back made a comment that Seattle has to pay royalties to A&M to hang that flag. I heard $100,000.
