don't forget that this dude played in the most "pro-like" conference in college football. this guy played against guys who will be nfl starters next season.

When all is said and done I firmly believe---as I opined in my last mock---that Cam Newton will be the #1 pick in the draft---either by the Panthers---or a team that trades up to get him.

The Panthers are not sold in the least on Jimmy Clausen...and what compounds the matter is they don't have the #33 pick (traded to the Patriots)---thus---they need some real buzz at the QB position.

However, because they don't have that second rounder they may be tempted to trade down to acquire a #1 and a #2.

But I don't see that happening---I see them grabbing Newton and feeling very good about it.

He has shown that he "off the field" issues don't affect his play. His footwork is better than Gabberts. He is the best QB available in the draft..
If going undefeated or winning a championship or being able to make all the throws or being able to scramble or being a true team leader or making good reads in important games or....maybe you just aint watching.
He is the best QB available in the draft. Don't people want a first round QB that can take a team deep in the playoffs?

Blah blah...I just don't like him doesn't fly.
'kay.
Specific reasons I don't like him:
1) He plays in a one read-then-run offense. We can safely assume that won't fly at the pro level. That means a wicked learning curve and I think the Cardinals have adequate prime talent to make another deep post-season run if they can get their act together with a QB. I don't know that anyone currently on the roster, or a guy like Newton or Gabbart can help.

2) His deep ball is nice, but those don't get called all that frequently.

3) He'll be playing behind a mediocre offensive line trying to make more reads then he ever has in a fraction of the time, because of this his already suspect footwork will go right out the window and he'll start shot-puting it on the mid and short stuff. Those balls don't get caught by the offense.

4) He did the Juco thing for a while, which is fine for most positions that aren't QB. A guy as sickly talented as Newton can cruise at that level without having to learn to much or put in too much prep (when compared to major college or pro level).

5) Being able to scramble doesn't make a QB any better.

6) Leadership credits don't always transfer between institutions. What some guys respond to won't always work with the next set.

7) Success in college doesn't translate.

Can't argue with you on this as many teams fall in love with a certain player in the draft. I think some team will trade up for him giving the Panthers a plethora of draft picks. I think that Newton and Gabbert will both go in the top ten. QBs are in demand big time and teams will reach for them.

It's all good, looks we are on way opposite sides about mostly everything concerning QBs, and what the Cards/NFL teams need to get to and succeed in the playoffs. He did more than make one reads, his feet can buy him time, and his leadership skills do count IMO.
Whiz wants the deep ball thrown, Newton can move around enough to let those deep patterns develop. That's where the skill to scramble does make a QB better. Success in college is a good + when evaluating a QB, otherwise everyone would be after crappy playing QBs.

if newton goes before 5 thats fine by me. that just means the probability of landing peterson or fairley may become more attainable.

Heck, if we're on opposite sides then it just means we got both sides covered, so we can't lose!

The system QB thing is what has me scared of picking Newton. **** college football coaches for making it so difficult for me to evaluate talent.

The whole thing with Newton is that if the Cards pass on him and hes great i (and i think we all) would be eternally bitter. If hes awful then i think i can get over it eventually.

An offense with Newton, Fitz, Beanie, Breaston would be pretty cool IMO. Definitley exciting atleast..

And i agree he will definitley shoot up the board these next few weeks and i wouldnt be surprised if he went number 1 either..

I agree Newton should be the pick the reasons are simple

1. Any player picked at #5 is a risk, there is no such thing as a sure thing really
2. He has the highest reward potential of any player in the draft
3. He plays the position that the Cards need the most
4. He plays the position that makes the biggest difference in the NFL
5. Drafting a 2nd rate QB in the later rounds make no sense because they already have Skelton

Drafting Newton, keeping Skelton and signing a veteran QB is a smart idea.

I am really close to adopting this viewpoint. My major problem with it is the Cards just need pass rush/LB so desperately, that should be their priority..IMO

But would Gabbert be the guy to take the chance on???

I agree but won't paint myself into the Newton or nothing corner. Maybe Gabbert will wow the Cards.

The argument for a OLB is strong but the Cards went to the SB without an elite OLB/pass rusher. It was the QB that made the difference.

I'd rather draft a QB in the first and a pass rusher in the 2nd or 3rd round than the other way around tbh.

Word, the theory that we are drafting to early to get the best QB in the draft amazes me. We need a QB more than anybody, watching the playoffs each year shows that QB is the most important single position. Who ever drafts Newton has a chance to join those clubs we see in the playoffs every year.
Whiz lives and dies with the pass, he put the air in Airizona. I think Newton can succeed here, he thrives off having the game in his hands, he doesn't fold or go down easy.

I am starting to get on board with Newton in the first.

This is operating under the assumption that the owners will lock the players out and there will not be a signed CBA until next August/September.

With no CBA, it is unlikely that we can sign Marc Bulger, trade for Kyle Orton/Kevin Kolb, or bring any other veteran QB to the team in time to really make an impact for the season. IF this occurs, the season is basically a wash and could/should be used to get much needed seasoning for our younger, talented players. This would give Cam that seasoning needed to lead the Cards to 10 wins in 2012.

I still think Locker is going to blow up the combine and make some ripples in draft order--but I don't think he'll go top 5 so it doesn't necessarily affect this debate. UNLESS a team looking for a big athletic talent thinks they can trade down get Locker and address another need, for example.

The thing about the Cam Newton hype is it might convince the Bills or the Bengals along with the Panthers to now take him. If the Cards show interest, it also gives the Titans, Redskins and Vikings more incentive to move in front of the Cards. I guess what I'm saying is I will just wait and see.

This is the part where his stock shoots up the charts, his media day went really well. Someone will grab him before the Redskins at #10. If he is there at #5 we gotta take him, we will never have the chance to get a franchise QB like this again. Our defense and our record will improve in 2011 (if there is a season). Zero shot at getting Luck in Az, zero%. The possible lockout isn't helping our FA hopes. Cam Newton....all day or he could be a stinkin 9er, and I would cry.

"one of the most phenomenal personal workouts I've ever seen."
Trent Dilfer

I just read an article today that slammed Cam on his private workout for some teams. After reading that I would not be surprised to see him go in round two. The people watching him thought his skills may not transfer to the NFL. I think this show was organized by his father and may have done more harm than good for Cam. At this point I would not take Newton over Gabbert or Mallet. I have watched Mallet since high school and have a good feel for his skills and character. I do not recall ever having seen Gabbert but do see some excellent write ups about him being more NFL ready than any of the other QBs. Mallet was dropped down from #7 on the Big Board to low in the first round for what ever reason but as Kipper says his ratings on these QBs will be changing from week to week right up to and after the combines. I think there is not doubt that our greatest need is a QB so it will come down to whether our team thinks one of these QB's is worth a #5 pick. A number 5 QB would cost a lot more than a #5 DE or DB and that could enter into the equation for the Cards. They might just luck out and have one of the QBs fall into round 2 if they do not take one with their first pick.

Doesn't Mayock have Locker rated the #2 QB in the draft? I've heard that Shannahan and the Redskins like him. It wouldn't shock me if they drafted him at 10.
