Specific reasons I don't like him:
1) He plays in a one read-then-run offense. We can safely assume that won't fly at the pro level. That means a wicked learning curve and I think the Cardinals have adequate prime talent to make another deep post-season run if they can get their act together with a QB. I don't know that anyone currently on the roster, or a guy like Newton or Gabbart can help.

2) His deep ball is nice, but those don't get called all that frequently.

3) He'll be playing behind a mediocre offensive line trying to make more reads then he ever has in a fraction of the time, because of this his already suspect footwork will go right out the window and he'll start shot-puting it on the mid and short stuff. Those balls don't get caught by the offense.

4) He did the Juco thing for a while, which is fine for most positions that aren't QB. A guy as sickly talented as Newton can cruise at that level without having to learn to much or put in too much prep (when compared to major college or pro level).

5) Being able to scramble doesn't make a QB any better.

6) Leadership credits don't always transfer between institutions. What some guys respond to won't always work with the next set.

7) Success in college doesn't translate.

I am just not sold on him being a franchise QB anytime soon. He is an athletic project who will have to learn to read defenses, take snaps from center and run a conventional offense. You have to love the guys potential and athleticism but he just isn't polished enough to be a NFL QB yet...I think his private team interviews will go alot further to determining where he goes in the draft than his workouts (I think everyone expects him to look good there).

I agree 110%

I agree Newton should be the pick the reasons are simple

1. Any player picked at #5 is a risk, there is no such thing as a sure thing really
2. He has the highest reward potential of any player in the draft
3. He plays the position that the Cards need the most
4. He plays the position that makes the biggest difference in the NFL
5. Drafting a 2nd rate QB in the later rounds make no sense because they already have Skelton

Drafting Newton, keeping Skelton and signing a veteran QB is a smart idea.

+1.. simple, logical... From what I understand, the conditions for the workout were FAR from ideal with winds up to 15 mph blowing int he face of the throws...

Even with that, Newton was throwing 20 yard in patterns on a rope, and making reads to 2nd and 3rd options...

Do I think Newton will come in and start from day one.. probably not, but dude has the arm and the intagibles to be a star.. and with the new CBA, and the almost guarenteed rookiw scale, he is worth the risk period

Just measure his brain. That is the unavailable statistic. That dog and pony show was embarrassing.

Peyton Manning and Ben Roethlisberger are both 6'5" and Joe Flacco is 6'6". Close enough.

Josh Freeman is 6'6" 250. All he did last season was throw 25 TD passes with only 6 Interceptions, 3400 yards, 61% completion rate, and 7.3 ypa and his team finished 10-6. That looks fairly good to me.

I flat out do not have any idea how Cam will turn out. Maybe all pro. Maybe Matt Leinart.

It can be an asset, but it doesn't make them better at playing the position.
Some very good (and very bad) QBs haven't a lick of ability to move outside the pocket. Sliding around inside it is where it's at.

the only question about Newton is what's he going to do when he gets all that money? So far, he seems all about the money. Those guys, at least at QB where hard work and study time are vital to success, have failed. If I had to compare him to a QB, it'd be Doug Williams. They both have all the physical ability and throw a very nice ball. If he has Williams work ethic he'll be fine. People give him the JaMarcus Russell comparison because they don't know if he's going to drink purple drank and balloon up to 300+ pounds.

Maybe he will buy a laptop from Dell.

Under Armour fully aboard the Camwagon
Cam Newton’s lightning strike career at Auburn has yielded a BCS championship, a Heisman Trophy and a mountain of still unanswered questions, which, if eventually answered a certain way could cause the vacating of the first two items.

It also helped land Newton the largest endorsement deal ever for a NFL rookie, a multiyear shoe and apparel endorsement contract with Under Armour, according to Darren Rovell at CNBC. While specific numbers were not available, the deal will reportedly surpass Reggie Bush’s $1 million per year contract with Adidas that was signed in 2006.

Brady Quinn got one of those deals too, before ever being drafted. If I am not mistaken, Under Armour is the main sponsor for TV coverage of the Combine. Wonder if their new boy will show up and work out. U A knows how to pike them.:D

IMO these are my choices in order @ #5

Newton
Fairly
Peterson
Bowers
Gabbert

I am one who loves the idea of Newton playing the Vick/Freeman role for the Cards. I also think that Fitz would be a fabulous off-field mentor to Newton (in the aspects of money, media, etc.)

OHHHHHHH....and the person that being able to scramble doesn't make a QB any better needs to look at EVERY QB that has won in the playoffs consistanly or won any Super Bowls. Every successful QB knows how and when to scramble. Only a few (Cunningham, Vick, Young) have made their careers on being a more mobile QB. Yes more of the successful ones tend to be more pocket passer type, but they all have scramble capabilities.

I still say he goes in the top 7. Nobody can definitely say what he will or won't do in the NFL. But where he goes in the draft is live game and will show how teams truly feel about Cam Newton.

So if you think he is going to suck, but you still think he will be drafted in the top 7, I laugh.

If you think he sucks but you think he might end up being a great QB, I laugh.

If you hope the 9ers get him I cry.

If you don't think he will go top 7, put your money where your mouth is, bet me a dollar. I have been stripping on the side lately so I am good for the dolla bills. If you just want to bring up the same stuff that is so well covered in the other threads, please just put it in the other threads, plenty to choose from. :D

But if you don't see him going in the top 7, first round, Desertdawg says bet me a dollar. No way a guy who talks about himself in the third person goes top 7 right?

Seriously though, this guy down the street has a nice laptop and I could use the extra cash.

I think he will be off the boards before the Cards pick. Denver is the only team ahead of us that won't take a qb. The Panthers, Bills & Bengals could all be interested in Newton. (or Gabbert)

The guy is thinking already about his marketing image and contract.

If any of you think he'll ever be happy here, on our team, given our limited spotlight, you have to be kidding yourselves.

Either he busts out, however likely or unlikely that is OR a team hits the jackpot on him after a year or two of training and then he's already angling for his next huge deal somewhere else.

This guy was nicely and in a well coached way throwing the WR's he tossed it to in the combine under the bus, if he's not doing well it's going to be the WR's fault IMO and if he is doing well it's going to be all because of CAM, again JMO, that kind of QB will eat up an organization IMO.

PASS.

Why would you laugh?

I think he's not going to remotely worth the draft pick he's taken at. And there are a lot of teams needing a QB at the top of the draft. Flash and cash, combined with a bunch of need in the top 7 means he could suck and go number one overall.

I saw a very good athlete that has no touch to his passes. He could turn out to be great down the road in about four or five years or he could never be more than a running QB with a great arm that throws for about 55% completions. To me his draft stock went down at the combine and not up.

I wonder if he goes in the Green Room Draft day? Could get lonely in there.
